For a lawn, choose a ready-to-spray product labeled for that lawn and the target weeds. For a driveway, patio, path, or ornamental bed, use only a product whose current label permits that site. A bottle that connects to a hose and a separate sprayer used with concentrate are different setups, and their directions are not interchangeable.
What “hose attachment weed killer” means
The term describes two common setups:
- Ready-to-spray bottle: The herbicide is packaged with a hose-end applicator. Spectracide Weed Stop for Lawns Concentrate Ready-to-Spray, for example, is described by the manufacturer as including a QuickFlip hose-end sprayer.
- Concentrate and separate sprayer: You connect a compatible hose-end sprayer, such as an Ortho Dial ‘n Spray, and use it with a concentrate whose label allows that application method. Compatibility and settings depend on the specific product and sprayer.
These are application formats, not guarantees that a product is suitable for every weed or surface. Check the product label for both the treatment site and the weeds it lists.
Choose by where the weeds are growing
For broadleaf weeds in a lawn
A hose-end weed killer for lawns must be labeled for the grass and weeds involved. The Spectracide product page describes Weed Stop for Lawns Concentrate Ready-to-Spray as a product for listed broadleaf lawn weeds. Its excerpt says to apply when those weeds are young and actively growing and soil moisture is adequate. Confirm the current packaging and label before use; the manufacturer’s page was not available to verify beyond that description.
Do not assume a lawn weed killer is suitable for garden beds, paths, or patios. A lawn product’s selectivity and permitted sites are specific to its label.

For driveways, patios, paths, and other non-lawn areas
Some products are registered for particular hardscape or ornamental sites, but that permission applies to the exact formulation and label—not to weed killers generally. EPA registration record for Reg. No. 84009-27 lists glyphosate-isopropylamine salt at 41% and sites including driveways, ornamental gardens, paths, patios, and sidewalks. That record is an example of product-specific registration, not authorization for another glyphosate product or a substitute for its current label: EPA registration record for 84009-27.
How to compare hose-end weed killers
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Site listed on the label | A product permitted for a lawn may not be permitted for a patio, ornamental bed, or path. |
| Target weeds | Use a product labeled for the weeds you need to control; a broad product description does not establish control of every species. |
| Selectivity | A selective lawn treatment is intended for specified weeds in specified turf. A nonselective herbicide can injure or kill desirable plants it contacts. |
| Application format | Determine whether the product is ready-to-spray or requires a separate compatible sprayer and concentrate. |
| Use directions and precautions | Follow the current label for application conditions, sprayer setup, protective measures, and any re-entry, watering, reseeding, or replanting instructions it provides. |
Use glyphosate products carefully
Glyphosate is a broad-spectrum, nonselective herbicide. The archived EPA label for Glyphosate Concentrate Herbicide says it can kill almost all plants it contacts, advises shielding desirable plants, and directs users to spray when the air is calm. EPA’s January 2020 review also discusses off-target drift and potential effects on non-target plants. The label and review are available at EPA’s archived Glyphosate Concentrate Herbicide label and EPA’s January 2020 glyphosate review.

The archived label is dated September 29, 2009. It describes hose-end application and names Ortho Dial ‘n Spray as an example, but its settings and directions are historical examples only. Do not transfer them to another herbicide, sprayer, or current package. Use the current label for the product you buy. EPA’s 2020 review states: “This product is toxic to plants and may adversely impact the forage and habitat of non-target organisms, including pollinators, in areas adjacent to the treated site. Protect the forage and habitat of non-target organisms by following label directions intended to minimize spray drift.”
What resistance figures do—and do not—tell you
EPA’s January 2020 review reports more than 155 weed species in the United States with confirmed resistance to one or more herbicides. This is a count of resistance to any herbicide, not a count of glyphosate-resistant species. It is a reason not to assume one active ingredient will control every weed; identify the target and follow the product label’s directions.

A practical selection checklist
- Identify the site: lawn, ornamental bed, driveway, patio, path, or another location.
- Identify the weed: check that the current label lists it or otherwise supports use for that target.
- Choose the format: buy a ready-to-spray bottle or pair a compatible hose-end sprayer with a concentrate labeled for that method.
- Check the full label: confirm permitted sites, application directions, weather precautions, plant-protection steps, and any follow-up restrictions.
- Apply only as directed: do not reuse another product’s rates or sprayer settings, and clean equipment only as the current product label instructs.
For a separate example of formulation variation, EPA’s record for Weed & Grass Killer G1PA2 lists 1% glyphosate and 2% nonanoic acid and an alternate brand name, Roundup Precision Gel Weed & Grass Killer. The record does not support hose-end application; it illustrates why the active ingredients and format must be checked for the specific product: EPA registration record for 92768-3.
