For most Apple households, the best premium choice is the Schlage Sense Pro, the Aqara Smart Lock U400 is the most versatile, and the Schlage Encode Plus is the safest conventional keypad-and-Wi-Fi pick. Design-focused buyers should look at the Level Lock Pro, while households that need many access codes and easy re-keying should consider the Kwikset Halo Select Plus.
Apple now calls the platform Apple Home, but the buying decision still includes both older HomeKit accessories and newer Matter products. The important distinction is Apple Home Key: a lock can work in the Home app without adding a key to Apple Wallet. The models below are specifically selected for Apple Home Key support, or for buyers comparing closely related Apple Home-compatible versions.
This is a U.S.-focused, research-based guide current to August 11, 2026. Prices are manufacturer-listed U.S. prices or starting prices where available, not guaranteed live prices. The recommendations are based on Apple documentation and current manufacturer specifications; they are not the result of hands-on installation or independent reliability, battery, security, or response-time testing.

If you are comparing the category rather than a particular brand, start with an Apple Home Key smart lock listing and then confirm the exact model, connectivity, door dimensions, and included accessories.
Important: prices, stock, retailer listings, software requirements, and product packaging can change. A manufacturer’s listing should be checked again before ordering.
1. Schlage Sense Pro: best premium Apple Home lock for hands-free entry
The Schlage Sense Pro Smart Deadbolt is the most distinctive choice in this group because it combines Apple Home Key with Schlage’s Converge technology and Ultra Wideband. Schlage describes the hands-free system as evaluating the authorized iPhone or Apple Watch’s position, approach speed, trajectory, and motion to determine whether the person intends to enter. That is a more specific approach than simply unlocking whenever a phone is detected nearby or relying only on a home-location boundary.
It also supports tap-to-unlock with Apple Home Key, keypad access codes, one-touch locking, remote management through the Schlage Home app, and Matter over Thread. The listed U.S. MSRP is $399, and Schlage announced purchase availability beginning June 29, 2026.
#1 Best Overall
- 【Apple Home and Home Key Support】The U100 is a smart door lock that is fully integrated into Apple Home. It can be unlocked with the Apple home keys by simply tapping an iPhone or Apple Watch, even when the iPhone or Apple Watch is out of power. Moreover, you can manage and share door access for your guests in Apple Home. (NOTE: To share Apple Home Keys, you need an Apple Home Hub)
- 【Fingerprint and More Ways to Unlock】The Smart Lock U100 offers multiple ways to unlock, including a high-precision fingerprint reader for up to 50 fingerprints, remotely configurable passwords via the Aqara Home app (An Aqara Zigbee 3.0 hub is required), one-time local passwords for visitors, and a mechanical key for emergency use. * The NFC card is not included and is sold separately.
- 【Automations with Aqara and Third-Party Devices】With an Aqara Zigbee 3.0 hub, the Smart Door Lock U100 is compatible with third-party ecosystems like Google Home, Alexa, IFTTT as well as the Aqara Home app, allowing it to be easily integrated into a wide range of smart home setups and used in smart home automations. For example, when someone presses the Aqara Video Doorbell G4, you will be able to view who is at your door and easily unlock the U100.
- 【Auto Lock & Do Not Disturb Mode】Thanks to the built-in gyroscope inside the lock, the auto-lock feature locks the door for you after you close it. Alternatively, you can disable this feature and leave the door always open. Also, the Do Not Disturb mode can mute the door lock sounds within a certain period of time, to avoid affecting your family’s sleep when you get back home late.
- 【A Durable and Secure Biometric door Lock with Long Battery Life】 The U100 is powered by 4 AA 1.5V batteries (included) and has a long battery life of up to 8 months. Also, a USB-C port for emergency charging is available. The lock body made of zinc alloy has an IP65 rating and complies with the same safety standard as BHMA Level 3. It’s capable of withstanding temperatures ranging from -31°F to 151°F. Your sensitive data (e.g., fingerprints) is stored locally and fully AES encrypted.
Why it stands out: It is the clearest pick for an Apple user who wants to approach the door with an authorized device and use hands-free unlocking, while retaining a keypad and the conventional deadbolt format.
Choose it if: you are willing to pay a premium for the new UWB hands-free feature and already use compatible Apple devices.
Watch-outs: hands-free behavior depends on compatible Apple hardware and the required software and ecosystem configuration. Schlage’s description is a manufacturer specification, not independent validation. Because the product is new as of this guide’s research date, long-term reliability is still unverified here rather than something to assume.
Best fit
High-end single-family homes, new construction, or a primary entry door where hands-free approach unlocking matters more than the lowest installed cost.

2. Aqara Smart Lock U400: best for the widest range of access methods
The Aqara Smart Lock U400 is the most flexible choice when a household wants Apple Home Key but does not want to rely on phones and watches alone. In addition to Home Key, Aqara lists UWB approach unlocking, fingerprint recognition, permanent, offline, and scheduled passwords, NFC cards, app control, voice control, and a mechanical-key backup.
The lock supports Matter over Thread and Apple Home. Aqara says UWB unlocking requires a Thread-enabled Apple Home hub. Its rechargeable battery is rated for up to six months under the manufacturer’s stated conditions, with USB-C charging and emergency-power options. That battery figure is a manufacturer estimate, not an independent test result.
Aqara lists the U400 for U.S. purchase through Aqara, Amazon, Apple, Best Buy, and other retailers. Before ordering, verify the exact U.S. version, battery and hub configuration, door dimensions, and whether the retailer’s package includes everything needed for the intended setup.
Why it stands out: It gives a family several ways to enter: an iPhone or Apple Watch, fingerprint, code, NFC card, app, voice control, or a physical key. That can be more practical than choosing a lock based on Home Key alone.

Choose it if: different residents, guests, children, or service providers need different forms of access.
Watch-outs: Matter, Thread, UWB, and the Aqara app are separate pieces of the system. Confirm that the Apple home hub is Thread-capable if you want the UWB or Matter path described by Aqara.
Best fit
Busy households, rental-style guest access, or homeowners who want fingerprint and NFC options alongside Apple Wallet access.
3. Schlage Encode Plus: best established keypad-and-Wi-Fi combination
The Schlage Encode Plus Smart WiFi Deadbolt is the straightforward choice for buyers who want a familiar exterior keypad, built-in Wi-Fi, Apple Home Key, and Schlage’s own management tools in one lock. Schlage lists unique access codes, remote lock and unlock, activity history, notifications, and Schlage Home app management in addition to Apple Home support.

Apple Home can be used alone or alongside the Schlage Home app. Remote Apple Home control requires a compatible Apple home hub, such as a HomePod, HomePod mini, Apple TV, or another supported hub.
Why it stands out: It offers a conventional keypad deadbolt with built-in Wi-Fi rather than making the homeowner assemble a separate bridge or Thread network for its primary connectivity path.

- Exceptional 1-Year Battery Life & Easy DIY Installation == Through the ThorBolt team's relentless pursuit of reducing power consumption, X1 can typically run for up to 1 year on 8 AA alkaline batteries from a well-known brand. X1 is compatible with most standard USA&CANADA deadbolts: Fits doors with a thickness of 1-3/8" to 1-3/4" (35-55mm) and features an adjustable latch backset from 2-3/8" to 2-3/4" (60-70mm); Suitable for 2-1/8" (54mm) and 1-1/2" (38mm) door holes
Choose it if: you want keypad codes and Wi-Fi, but do not need the Sense Pro’s newer UWB hands-free approach unlocking.
Watch-outs: do not confuse the Encode Plus with the less expensive standard Schlage Encode. The standard Encode product page identifies built-in Wi-Fi but does not establish Apple Home Key support. If Wallet-based Home Key is required, the Plus model is the relevant Schlage choice.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Homeowners replacing a standard keypad deadbolt who want an uncomplicated Wi-Fi installation and Apple Home Key without moving to a concealed lock design.
4. Level Lock Pro: best discreet, nearly invisible design
The Level Lock Pro hides the smart mechanism inside the door rather than placing a large touchscreen or conspicuous interior housing on the lock. From the outside, it is intended to look like a traditional deadbolt. It supports Apple Home Key, Apple Home, Matter over Thread, Google Home, Alexa, and SmartThings.
Level lists door-status detection, BHMA AAA certification, physical keys, key fobs, and optional Level Keypad support. Its product page lists a $349 price. Level also publishes a 250,000-cycle and 135-year average-use durability claim. That is a manufacturer claim and should not be treated as independent durability testing or as a guarantee for a particular installation.
Level specifies a 2.125-inch bore, a 1.75-to-2-inch door thickness, and 2.375- or 2.75-inch backset options for Level Lock Pro. A Matter-over-Thread hub is required for Matter operation. Level identifies compatible Apple home hubs including HomePod mini, HomePod second generation, and Apple TV 4K third-generation Wi-Fi plus Ethernet.
Why it stands out: It preserves the appearance of a conventional lock, which is useful for design-sensitive renovations, historic-looking exteriors, and homeowners who do not want a visible touchscreen.
Choose it if: the door meets Level’s dimensions and you are comfortable adding a separate keypad if phone-free code entry is important.
Watch-outs: the Level Keypad is an extra purchase. Thread coverage and a suitable home hub also matter if you want Matter or reliable remote ecosystem operation.
If code entry is necessary for a Level installation, add a Level Keypad to the budget rather than assuming it is included with the lock.
Best fit
Design-conscious Apple households and construction projects where the visible hardware should remain visually understated.
5. Kwikset Halo Select Plus: best keypad-focused alternative for many codes
The Kwikset Halo Select Plus is aimed at households that prioritize touchscreen keypad entry, a large number of codes, and re-keying flexibility. Kwikset specifies Apple Home Key, built-in Wi-Fi, optional Matter connectivity through Thread, remote access, scheduled and temporary codes, event logs, tamper alerts, physical keys, and SmartKey re-keying.
Kwikset specifies up to 250 access codes, four AA batteries, BHMA Grade AAA security, and a 20-minute UL fire rating. It also lists a one-year limited electronics warranty plus limited lifetime mechanical and finish warranties. These ratings and warranty terms should be checked against the exact model and current product documentation before purchase.

- True Hands-Free Unlocking with UWB Technology: Experience a new era of smart access — UWB (Ultra-Wideband) detects your incoming presence, direction, and intent to unlock automatically as you approach. It provides a faster, more convenient, and highly secure way to enter your home without touching the lock. Perfect when your hands are full, you're wearing gloves, or arriving in the rain. (Note: UWB unlocking requires a Thread-enabled Apple Home hub and is supported on Apple Watch Series 6 or later (excluding SE) running watchOS 11.5+ and iPhone 11 or later (excluding iPhone SE & iPhone 16e) running iOS 18.5+.)
- All-in-One Unlocking Options: Enjoy Apple home key tap-to-unlock (requires an Apple Thread-enabled Matter controller: HomePod 2nd Gen, HomePod mini, or Apple TV 4K 2021/2022), plus fingerprint, touchscreen passcode, voice assistant control, app remote access, NFC card support (card sold separately), and a physical key, giving you flexible, reliable ways to enter your home in any situation.
- Matter Over Thread for Multi-Ecosystem Compatibility: Built with Matter over Thread, the U400 can connect to multiple smart home platforms simultaneously, allowing you to enjoy the unique features of each ecosystem. Thread offers faster response, more stable connectivity, lower power consumption, and secure data transmission. Note: A Thread-enabled Matter controller from each ecosystem is required for its respective platform.
- Convenient Rechargeable Power System: Powered by a rechargeable and removable lithium battery that lasts up to 6 months per charge. Use the lock's USB-C port to recharge without taking the lock offline, or remove the battery and charge it separately. A low-battery voice alert will notify you when the battery drops below 20%, ensuring you never get caught off guard.
- Certified Security & Outdoor Durability: BHMA-certified for proven protection, mechanical strength, and long-term reliability. The IP65-rated exterior guards against dust and water for dependable outdoor performance. Plus, the rekeyable design allows you to change the physical key without replacing the entire lock cylinder.
The Apple Home Key setup is not simply a matter of adding the lock to Apple Home in its out-of-box Wi-Fi state. Kwikset says the lock must be converted to Matter and then added to Apple Home for that setup path. Wi-Fi and Matter are different operating modes, so confirm which features remain available in the mode you choose.
Why it stands out: Up to 250 codes and SmartKey re-keying are meaningful advantages for large households, frequent contractors, cleaners, caregivers, or owners who regularly change access.
Choose it if: keypad access and code administration matter more than a concealed design or UWB approach unlocking.
Watch-outs: Kwikset’s Wi-Fi mode is advertised as requiring no hub for its remote-access mode, but remote control through Apple Home still follows Apple’s home-hub requirement. Do not treat Wi-Fi remote access in the Kwikset app and remote Apple Home access as identical features.
Best fit
Busy homes, accessory units, landlords, and renovation projects where a high code count and the ability to re-key the cylinder are priorities.

6. Level Lock+: best alternative for buyers who prefer the Level platform
Level Lock+ remains worth considering when its design and current availability fit the project. Level’s support documentation identifies Level Lock+ as Apple Home Key-capable and lists Apple Home Key, the Level Home app, Apple Home, physical keys, key fobs, optional keypad codes, and remote control through supported connectivity configurations.
The naming requires care. Level identifies Level Lock+, Level Lock+ Matter, and Level Lock Pro as Home Key-capable products, but listings can describe different generations and connectivity packages. A buyer should verify whether a listing is the Matter version, an older HomeKit or Home Key version, or a package bundled with a bridge or keypad.
Why it stands out: It offers the Level appearance and Home Key experience without requiring every buyer to move to the newer Pro model.
Choose it if: you find a current Lock+ configuration from a reputable seller and its exact connectivity matches your Apple Home setup.

Apple Home compatibility is not the same as Apple Home Key
This is the most important distinction in the category. A lock may work in the Apple Home app through HomeKit or Matter and still lack Apple Home Key. For the tap-to-unlock experience using an iPhone or Apple Watch, the product listing should specifically identify Apple Home Key, Home Key, or Apple Wallet support.
Words such as works with Apple Home or HomeKit compatible are not enough on their own. They may describe control from the Home app without promising that a digital key will be added to Wallet.
When a supported lock is paired, Apple Home may offer to add a digital key to Apple Wallet. Apple allows the user to choose Express Mode, which is intended to make entry faster, or require Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. The right choice depends on the household’s balance between convenience and authentication.
Matter and Thread: what you actually need
Matter is a compatibility standard; it is not a promise that every feature in a manufacturer’s app will appear in Apple Home. Fingerprints, NFC cards, detailed event logs, special UWB behavior, and vendor-specific code tools may remain partly or entirely managed in the manufacturer’s app.
Several locks in this guide use Matter over Thread. Thread is a low-power wireless network, and these locks require a compatible Thread-capable home hub or border router. For Apple households, examples identified in the relevant documentation include HomePod mini, HomePod second generation, and compatible Apple TV 4K models. The exact supported hub can vary by product and feature.
If your chosen lock uses Matter over Thread, budget for an Apple Home hub such as a compatible HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K when you do not already have one. Check the lock maker’s current compatibility list rather than buying a hub based only on its name.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Wi-Fi versus Thread
- Built-in Wi-Fi: Schlage Encode Plus and Kwikset Halo Select Plus offer a direct Wi-Fi path for their respective manufacturer ecosystems. This can simplify a retrofit, but it does not remove Apple Home’s separate home-hub requirements for remote Apple Home access.
- Matter over Thread: Schlage Sense Pro, Aqara U400, Level Lock Pro, and the Matter-capable Level and Kwikset configurations require suitable Thread infrastructure for the Matter path.
- Vendor app versus Apple Home: the manufacturer app may expose code scheduling, fingerprint enrollment, NFC cards, diagnostics, or event details that Apple Home does not expose in the same way.
Remote control, automations, and guest access
Control while away from home, Apple Home automations, and guest access require an Apple home hub. Without one, a lock may still be useful locally through Bluetooth, Thread, Wi-Fi, a keypad, a key, or the manufacturer’s stated local process, but do not assume that every remote feature will work.
Apple Home supports automations such as locking after the door closes and locking when leaving home. A practical installation may need a door-position sensor or another supported trigger so that “after the door closes” means the door is actually shut, not merely that a routine has run. Test any lock automation carefully before relying on it.
Apple says invited guests can receive time-limited access to doors, locks, and security accessories. Apple Home also supports activity history for supported accessories. Manufacturers may provide additional code management, audit trails, tamper alerts, or notifications in their own apps, so compare the Apple Home feature set with the vendor app instead of assuming they are identical.
A safer commissioning sequence
- Install and align the deadbolt so it operates smoothly by hand before connecting smart features.
- Pair the lock using the manufacturer’s current instructions. Matter products may be set up in the vendor app first or added through the Home app using the Matter code.
- In Apple Home, use the add-accessory flow and scan or enter the supplied setup code. Labels can vary slightly by iOS version and product firmware.
- When prompted, add the Home Key to Apple Wallet and choose Express Mode or authentication with Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode.
- Set up the required Apple home hub for remote control, automations, and guest access. For Matter-over-Thread models, confirm that the hub is Thread-capable.
- Create only the codes, users, and automations the household needs. Test local unlocking, keypad entry, Apple Home control, remote access, notifications, and the physical backup method where one is provided.
- Keep the physical setup code, emergency instructions, and any mechanical keys in a secure location. Do not dispose of them after installation.
Measure the door before choosing a lock
Door fit matters more than the Apple branding. Most locks in this roundup are residential deadbolts intended for standard single-cylinder preparations, but none should be treated as universal for every U.S. door.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMeasure these items
- Deadbolt type: confirm that the door uses a single-cylinder deadbolt rather than a mortise lock, multipoint system, interconnected lock, narrow-stile assembly, or another specialty format.
- Bore diameter: measure the large hole through the door.
- Backset: measure from the door edge to the center of the bore. Common options are often 2.375 or 2.75 inches, but verify the lock’s specifications.
- Door thickness: measure the slab, including any unusual trim or mounting conditions.
- Strike alignment: the bolt must enter the strike without forcing the door or requiring the motor to overcome pressure.
- Clearance: check the interior side of the door, jamb, trim, sidelites, storm door, and nearby wall for the required housing, battery access, or keypad placement.
For example, Level specifies a 2.125-inch bore, 1.75-to-2-inch door thickness, and 2.375- or 2.75-inch backset options for Level Lock Pro. Aqara describes the U400 as compatible with single-cylinder deadbolt installations but warns that modifications may be needed for different dimensions. Other models should be checked against their own templates rather than assumed to share those measurements.

For a construction or renovation project, put the exact lock model and door-prep requirements on the hardware schedule before ordering doors. If the door is fire-rated, confirm that the specific lock and installation are permitted by the applicable listing and authority having jurisdiction; do not infer approval from a generic smart-lock description. If the door is warped or the existing strike is misaligned, correct that condition before blaming the smart lock for poor operation.
Which lock should you buy?
Choose Schlage Sense Pro if premium hands-free UWB approach unlocking is the main reason you want to upgrade.
Choose Aqara U400 if you want the broadest access menu, including fingerprints, NFC cards, passwords, physical keys, UWB, and Home Key.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose Schlage Encode Plus if you want a familiar keypad deadbolt, built-in Wi-Fi, and Apple Home Key without depending on Thread for the lock’s primary connection.
Choose Level Lock Pro if the exterior should look like a conventional lock and you are comfortable purchasing a separate keypad for code entry.
Choose Kwikset Halo Select Plus if up to 250 codes, touchscreen entry, Wi-Fi, and SmartKey re-keying are more important than a concealed mechanism.
Choose Level Lock+ if you prefer the Level design and can verify the exact current generation, Matter status, and included accessories.
What not to overread in the specifications
- Home Key is not a security-test score. It describes an Apple Wallet access feature, not independent resistance to forced entry.
- BHMA, ANSI, and UL references have specific meanings. A Grade AAA or fire-rating statement should not be treated as a substitute for independent attack testing or as proof that the complete door assembly is secure.
- Cycle and battery numbers are not guarantees. Level’s cycle claim and Aqara’s battery estimate come from the manufacturer and depend on conditions, installation, usage, temperature, network behavior, and firmware.
- UWB is not automatically better in every home. Schlage and Aqara describe their own approach-unlocking methods, but this guide does not independently validate reliability in different houses, device combinations, or software versions.
- Remote access is not the same as local access. A lock can open by keypad or nearby phone while remote Apple Home control, guest access, and automations remain unavailable until the required hub is installed and configured.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does every HomeKit or Apple Home lock support Apple Home Key?
No. A lock can work in Apple Home through HomeKit or Matter without supporting Apple Wallet Home Key. Look specifically for Apple Home Key, Home Key, or Apple Wallet support in the exact product listing and model configuration.
Do I need a HomePod or Apple TV for an Apple Home smart lock?
You need a compatible Apple home hub for Apple Home remote control, automations, and guest access. Matter-over-Thread locks also need a Thread-capable home hub or border router. Local keypad, key, or nearby-device features may still work without the same hub, depending on the lock.
What is the difference between Matter and Apple Home Key?
Matter is an interoperability standard that helps compatible accessories work across supported smart-home platforms. Apple Home Key is an Apple Wallet-based digital-key feature. A Matter lock may work in Apple Home without offering Home Key, and some manufacturer features may remain available only in the vendor app.
Can I use Apple Home automations to lock the door?
Apple Home supports automations such as locking when leaving home and locking after the door closes. The exact trigger and required accessories vary. For an after-closing automation, a door-position sensor or another suitable trigger may be needed, and every automation should be tested before it is trusted.
Which lock is easiest to specify for a construction project?
There is no universal answer because door preparation and connectivity requirements differ. Start by confirming a standard single-cylinder deadbolt, bore, backset, door thickness, strike alignment, and available interior clearance. Then specify the exact model and version, including any Apple hub, Thread hub, keypad, or bridge required.
The Bottom Line
The best Apple Home lock depends on the entry method and door conditions you actually have. Pick Schlage Sense Pro for premium UWB hands-free entry, Aqara U400 for the most access options, Schlage Encode Plus for a conventional built-in-Wi-Fi keypad, Level Lock Pro for discreet hardware, and Kwikset Halo Select Plus for high code capacity and re-keying. Before ordering, verify Home Key support, the exact model generation, hub requirements, and every door measurement.
