The most relevant hair catcher for washer discharge is a reusable inline lint filter that connects to the washing machine’s drain hose. It can intercept hair and lint before they reach the drain, but it is a preventive accessory—not a guaranteed way to stop every clog or clear a blockage that already exists. Before buying, confirm that the filter suits your washer’s hose, drain-height and flow requirements, and that you have room to mount and clean it.
What kind of washer hair catcher should you look for?
Look for an external, reusable washing-machine lint filter designed to sit inline on the drain hose. Its canister catches debris discharged with the water; the filter bag or other collection element then needs periodic cleaning. Filtrol is one example of this product type, not an independently established best model. A municipal recommendation supports the general approach: Hazel Park’s Department of Public Works advises attaching a lint catcher to a washer drain hose to catch lint before it reaches a laundry-sink drain. Check fit and installation requirements before buying
Compatibility depends on your washer and plumbing setup. Use the washer manual and the filter maker’s instructions rather than assuming that a universal-looking fitting will work.

- Plan the route and mounting space: Check that the filter can be mounted as directed, the outlet can reach the existing drain, and the hose will not be sharply kinked or obstructed.
- Leave room for upkeep: You need practical access to remove and clean the filter. If buying a used or older unit, check that replacement bags fit that generation; the manufacturer flags bag compatibility in its FAQ.
Understand what the catcher can—and cannot—do
An inline catcher is meant to intercept hair and lint leaving the washer. It does not replace a washer’s built-in debris filter, and it does not diagnose a washer that has stopped draining. Some machines have an accessible drain-pump or debris filter that can collect lint, dirt, hair, or other objects. The design and cleaning procedure vary by model: Whirlpool’s front-load washer guidance and Samsung’s debris-filter instructions describe model-specific internal filters.
Filtrol’s home page advertises an 89% microfiber catch rate, but the page reviewed does not establish a test method. Treat that figure as a manufacturer claim, not an independently verified hair-capture rate or a prediction of how much clogging a particular installation will prevent: Filtrol’s claim.

Clean the filter and maintain the washer safely
Collected debris must be removed according to the filter maker’s directions; a full or neglected filter is not a set-and-forget solution. For the washer’s own filter, follow the manual for your exact model and prepare for residual water before opening any access point. LG’s instructions, for example, call for draining residual water before removing its pump filter, then cleaning the filter with a soft-bristle brush and warm water: LG filter-cleaning guidance. Samsung likewise instructs users to prepare a towel and shallow dish and drain water before removing the debris filter in applicable models: Samsung’s instructions. Not every washer has an accessible, user-cleanable filter.
If the washer is already not draining
Do not install a catcher expecting it to clear a blockage. Poor drainage can come from a kinked or obstructed hose, a clogged internal filter, an installation issue, or a blockage in the household drain. Start with the troubleshooting instructions for your model; LG and Whirlpool both describe drainage checks, but their advice is model-specific: LG drainage guidance and Whirlpool front-load washer guidance.

- Follow the washer’s troubleshooting steps. Check for a kinked or obstructed hose and review the model’s specified installation conditions.
- Clean an internal filter only if the manual permits it. Use the prescribed draining and cleaning procedure; do not assume every model has the same access or filter design.
