If you have an espresso-capable grinder, whole beans are usually the most flexible choice: grind just before brewing and adjust the grind as needed. If you buy pre-ground coffee, check that its grind is suitable for your machine and basket; an “espresso” label alone does not guarantee a fit for every device.
What “coffee powder” means for espresso
In this context, “coffee powder” means ground coffee. You can buy it pre-ground, or buy whole beans and grind them before brewing. Espresso extracts quickly, so grind size matters: the grounds need enough surface area for extraction while still allowing water to flow through the coffee bed. There is no single grinder setting that works for every coffee, machine, and basket.
Whole beans or pre-ground coffee?
Whole beans: more control if you have a grinder
Whole beans let you grind immediately before extraction and adjust the grind when a shot runs too quickly or slowly. The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) describes carbon dioxide loss as a useful freshness consideration: it gives about three weeks after roasting for whole beans as an approximate heuristic, not a guaranteed flavor deadline. After grinding, degassing happens much faster. SCA Senior Advisor for Scientific Communication Peter Giuliano explains that carbon dioxide lost over weeks in whole-bean coffee can be lost in minutes after grinding. SCA gives about an hour after grinding as an approximate freshness heuristic, not a safety deadline. Read SCA’s explanation of freshly roasted coffee.
Pre-ground: convenient, but check the fit
Pre-ground coffee can be practical if you do not own a grinder. Check your machine manual and basket guidance, because the grind required depends on the device; coffee marked “espresso” may not behave identically in every machine. Once opened, seal the package and keep it away from heat, light, moisture, and air as much as practical. No specific container or guaranteed shelf life is established here, so use it promptly rather than relying on a fixed cutoff.

Choose a roast for the flavor you enjoy
There is no universal best roast for espresso. The SCA says darker roasts tend toward chocolatey, bittersweet flavors, while lighter roasts can emphasize fruity and floral notes. Roast labels such as “French,” “Italian,” and “Full City” are not used consistently, so read the roaster’s tasting notes as well as the roast description. Espresso does not have to be dark roasted. See the SCA’s explanation of roast level.
How to choose coffee for your machine
- Check the machine and basket guidance. Consult the manufacturer’s manual for the coffee and grind requirements of your particular machine and basket. General espresso guidance cannot establish compatibility for every model.
- Choose whole bean or pre-ground. If you have an espresso-capable grinder, whole beans let you grind fresh and make adjustments. If you do not, choose pre-ground coffee only when its grind suits your machine.
- Use flavor notes to pick a roast. Choose a darker profile for more chocolatey, bittersweet tendencies or a lighter one for more fruity or floral tendencies; use the roaster’s description to refine the choice.
- Look for a roast date. A visible roast date helps you judge freshness more usefully than an unspecified “fresh” claim. Treat freshness timeframes as flavor heuristics, not expiration dates.
- Adjust the grind and recipe gradually. If the shot flows too quickly or too slowly, change grind and recipe cautiously, keeping your machine’s instructions in view. Grind affects both extraction and water flow; no universal setting is established. Barista Hustle explains the extraction tradeoff.
Use espresso recipe numbers as a starting point
A 2017 survey by the Barista Guild of America, developed with SCA Research, found that 275 baristas reported an average espresso dose of 18–20 grams, an average weight-measured output of 36.5 grams, an average 1:2 brew ratio, and an extraction time of 25–30 seconds as common practice. The survey also reported 9 bars and roughly 200°F. These are historical survey results, not requirements for every home machine or taste preference; the SCA notes that practice varies and changes over time. Start with your machine’s guidance, then adjust to the coffee and the flavor you prefer. Read the SCA summary of the 2017 espresso survey.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
These criteria support choosing a coffee format, roast profile, and grind approach; they do not establish a winning brand. No particular coffee products were compared or tasted, and no current price or availability data is established here. For a specific machine, follow its maker’s manual and basket guidance rather than assuming that a coffee label guarantees compatibility. The SCA maintains standards for espresso machines and home grinders, but those category-level standards do not replace model-specific instructions. See the SCA’s coffee standards.
