Outdoor Can Crushers That Actually Make Backyard Recycling Easier

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A good outdoor can crusher is not complicated, but buying the wrong one creates three problems fast: crushed cans your recycler may not want, a rusted handle that sticks after one season, and a wall mount that works loose because it was screwed into siding instead of structure.

For most homeowners, the best garden or outdoor can crusher is a powder-coated steel wall-mounted 12/16 oz model with a long handle, solid pivot, and exterior-rated mounting hardware. Install it under cover near a labeled recycling bin, not out on an exposed fence line. Budget about $25 to $60 for a dependable household unit, plus $5 to $25 for screws, washers, anchors, or a backer board.

Before you buy, check one rule first: your local recycling program. The EPA says aluminum cans generally should not be crushed for single-stream recycling because flattened cans can be harder for sorting equipment to identify. If your cans go into a deposit-return stream, scrap stream, or separate aluminum bin, crushing is usually much more useful. That local-rule check matters more than brand names.

Best Outdoor Can Crushers at a Glance

On our job sites, the best small recycling stations are simple: a crusher mounted to real framing, an open bin directly below it, and a location protected from rain. The product only does half the work. The mounting surface and collection setup decide whether people actually use it.

First, Find Out Whether You Should Crush Cans at All

This is the part many product roundups skip, and it is the first question we would ask before mounting anything to a wall.

If your household uses single-stream curbside recycling, where paper, cardboard, cans, and plastic containers all go into one cart, crushed aluminum cans may cause sorting trouble. The EPA’s guidance is that aluminum cans generally should not be crushed in single-stream programs because flattened cans can be harder for sorting equipment to detect. In a mixed stream, a smashed can may behave more like paper or a flat contaminant than a three-dimensional container.

If your city uses multi-stream recycling, a bottle bill return center, a separate aluminum collection bin, or a scrap metal route, crushing makes more sense. It saves space, keeps bins from filling with air, and makes storage easier between drop-offs. In those situations, a crusher can reduce a 12 oz can to roughly 1 inch thick, depending on the model and how firmly it is operated.

The recycling context is worth caring about. The Aluminum Association reported the U.S. aluminum beverage can recycling rate at 43% for 2023, below the long-term average near 52%. The Can Manufacturers Institute reports similar recent figures, around 42% in 2020-2022 and 43% in 2023. Aluminum is highly recyclable, but the system works only when cans reach the right stream in the right condition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Our practical rule: if your hauler says “do not crush,” do not buy a crusher for curbside cans. If your cans are returned, separated, or hauled as scrap, a crusher is a worthwhile garage or garden-area upgrade.

What Makes a Can Crusher Good for Outdoor Use?

An outdoor can crusher lives a harder life than one mounted inside a pantry. It sees humidity, temperature swings, sticky residue, grit, wet hands, and occasional rough use from guests. For patios, sheds, garages, and garden work zones, we look for construction details before convenience features.

Weather-resistant body

Powder-coated steel is the common sweet spot for household models. It is stronger than thin decorative metal and cheaper than stainless. Aluminum bodies resist corrosion well, but the pivot hardware still matters. Stainless rods, brass inserts, plated fasteners, and a heavy hinge are all good signs. A $12 crusher may work fine in a dry garage, but it is rarely the right choice for an exposed outdoor wall.

Real can capacity

Match the crusher to what your household actually drinks. A 12 oz-only crusher is fine for standard soda and beer cans. Many modern households also use 16 oz tallboys, energy drink cans, 24 oz cans, or 32 oz cans. For those, buy a 12/16 oz unit at minimum or a heavy-duty multi-size crusher that lists 24/32 oz compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Long handle and comfortable grip

A longer handle reduces force. That matters when the unit is mounted outside and used repeatedly after cookouts, parties, or yard work. Rubber grips help with wet hands. A short handle on a flimsy frame often leads to people jerking the crusher, which loosens screws and bends cheap hardware.

Mounting holes that accept proper fasteners

We prefer crushers with at least four mounting points and enough clearance for washers. The fasteners should land in studs, a post, masonry anchors, or a backer board fastened to structure. Drywall anchors, short screws, thin siding, and fence pickets are not enough.

Our Top Picks by Use Case

Best overall: powder-coated 12/16 oz wall-mounted crusher

For a typical homeowner, this is the right category. Look for a steel wall-mounted crusher with a long handle, rubberized grip, 12 oz and 16 oz compatibility, and a powder-coated finish. Many mid-range units also include a bottle opener, which is useful on patios as long as you keep glass recycling separate.

Expect to pay $25 to $60. The better units in this range have stronger pivots, smoother action, reinforced handles, rubber liners, and a finish that survives better in a covered outdoor location. Mount it near the garage door, on a shed post, or beside a patio recycling bin. Keep it out of direct rain.

Best budget: basic 12 oz steel wall-mounted crusher

A Buffalo Tools CNCRSH-style crusher is the budget answer for standard cans and light use. These are commonly listed around $11 to $15, with the broader budget category running $10 to $25. They are simple, small, and good enough for occasional household recycling if the mounting is solid.

The tradeoff is capacity and durability. Many basic models are intended for 12 oz cans only. If your family buys tallboys or energy drinks, you will either jam the unit or stop using it. For outdoor use, place a budget crusher in a dry garage or covered shed, not on a wet fence or open patio post.

Best value: Pacific Precision Metals The Crusher-style 12/16 oz unit

This style is a good value for homeowners who want a simple wall-mounted crusher that handles common soda and beer cans, including many 16 oz cans. Current pricing is around $27. It can flatten cans to about 1 inch, which makes a noticeable difference if you store cans for redemption or separate recycling.

It is still a manual crusher, so you will handle the can before and after crushing unless you mount it directly over a bin. That is not a dealbreaker. Just rinse or drain cans first, and set the crusher high enough that the crushed can drops or slides into the container below without extra handling.

Best ergonomic: Dial Industries Easy Pull-style auto-dispensing crusher

For shared spaces, an auto-dispensing crusher is worth considering. Dial Industries Easy Pull-style units are often listed around $36 to $39, with the general ergonomic category around $35 to $50. The benefit is less hand contact with sticky cans and sharp crushed edges.

The key limitation is size. Many Easy Pull-style models are designed for 12 oz cans, not 16 oz cans. That makes them a good fit for standard soda cans in a family garage, clubhouse, or break area, but not for households that mostly use tall cans. Where children, older adults, or frequent guests will use the station, the easier pull and auto-drop feature can be worth the premium.

Best heavy-duty: MasterCrush-style multi-size crusher

If your recycling bin fills with 16 oz, 24 oz, or 32 oz cans, skip the small units and buy a heavy-duty multi-size crusher. MasterCrush-style wall-mounted crushers are designed for multiple can sizes and some plastic bottles, depending on the model. Current third-party pricing appears roughly $50 to $85, with the broader heavy-duty category around $50 to $90.

The higher cost usually buys heavier steel, powder coating, stainless rods, brass inserts, stronger hinges, and better leverage. It also puts more load into the wall. We would mount this type on a 2×6 or wider backer board fastened into studs or posts, not directly to thin material.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Be careful with the plastic bottle claim. Many local recycling programs prefer plastic bottles handled a certain way, often with caps on and labels intact. A can crusher that can physically flatten a bottle is not proof your recycler wants bottles flattened.

Best high-volume: CanPactor-style 30-gallon station

For a home patio, a 30-gallon can-crushing station is usually overkill. For a school, club, community garden, break area, event patio, or shop, it can be the right tool. A CanPactor-style station can hold up to about 400 crushed aluminum cans, which reduces overflow and keeps cans in one visible container.

  • GREAT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT: Easily crushes cans to save room in the garbage or recycling bin by compressing to approx. 20% of its original size.
  • THE CAN CRUSHER / SMASHER makes recycling a breeze: Recycle aluminum soda, pop, and beer cans. For use with standard 16oz. aluminum can, the 16 oz. crusher can be used for 12 oz. cans as well. Must have gadgets for home.

  • ONLY 2 MOVING PARTS: with an easy-to-grab handle that makes it easy to operate. Simply hold the crusher's handle and pull it down to crush a can.

Pricing is much higher than household crushers. Plan on roughly $150 to $500+ for compact recycling stations, with commercial and industrial equipment costing more. Cost depends on capacity, enclosure material, vandal resistance, fire rating needs, and whether the station is designed for public or commercial use.

Outdoor Installation: How We Mount One So It Stays Put

A can crusher is a lever. Every pull loads the fasteners, backing surface, and wall. The most common failure is not the crusher body; it is a weak installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a clean residential setup, use a 2×6 or wider backer board. Pressure-treated lumber works in damp utility areas, but for a visible patio or garage wall, a painted exterior-grade board looks better. Fasten the board into studs, posts, or masonry first. Then fasten the crusher to the board. This spreads the load, gives you better screw placement, and makes future replacement easier.

For wood framing, use exterior-rated screws or lag screws with washers. For masonry, use anchors sized for the wall material and the crusher’s mounting holes. Do not mount into vinyl siding alone, fiber cement siding alone, drywall anchors, fence pickets, or thin plywood. If the surface flexes when you pull the handle, it is not ready.

Most installations take 30 to 90 minutes once materials are on hand. The basic tool list is short: a drill or impact driver, level, pencil, tape measure, stud finder for framed walls, appropriate drill bits, exterior-rated fasteners, washers, and a backer board if the wall needs one. Masonry installations may need a hammer drill and masonry bit.

Mounting height

Test the actual users before final fastening. As a starting point, place the can chamber around chest to lower-chest height for the primary user, often 42 to 54 inches above the floor or patio surface. The handle should be easy to pull through its full travel without scraping knuckles or forcing the user to reach overhead.

For shared spaces, lower and smoother is usually better than high and forceful. If accessibility matters, consider reach range, clear floor space, and whether an auto-dispensing model reduces handling. Do not mount a crusher where a child can treat it like a toy. The pinch points are real, and crushed cans can have sharp edges.

Bin placement

Put a dedicated open recycling bin directly below or beside the crusher. Label it for aluminum cans only if that is your intended stream. Do not let crushed cans migrate into yard waste, bagged trash, or plastic bags your hauler does not accept. Near gardens, this matters because yard-waste bins often have strict contamination rules.

Cost Breakdown for a Backyard Recycling Station

A good setup does not need to be expensive. The crusher is usually the largest cost, but the fasteners and backer board are what make it feel professional.

Item Typical 2026 Cost Notes
Budget wall-mounted crusher $10-$25 Best for 12 oz cans and light covered use
Mid-range 12/16 oz crusher $25-$60 Best fit for most garages, patios, and sheds
Heavy-duty multi-size crusher $50-$90 For 16 oz, 24 oz, 32 oz cans and heavier use
Auto-dispensing ergonomic crusher $35-$50 Good for shared spaces and less hand contact
Commercial recycling station $150-$500+ For schools, clubhouses, shops, and event areas
Exterior screws, lags, washers, anchors $5-$25 Match hardware to wood, masonry, or framing
Backer board $5-$25 Use 2×6 or wider lumber; paint or seal if visible

For most homeowners, the finished DIY cost lands between $35 and $85. That assumes a $25 to $60 crusher and basic mounting materials. A heavier multi-size setup may land closer to $75 to $125 once you include better hardware and a finished backer board. A commercial-style station can easily exceed $500 after shipping, bins, signage, and installation details.

When to DIY vs. When to Hire a Pro

This is a reasonable DIY project if you are mounting to exposed studs, a solid garage wall, a shed post, or a masonry wall you understand. The work is similar to hanging a hose reel or wall-mounted tool rack, but with more repeated pulling force. If you can locate framing, drill pilot holes, keep a board level, and choose proper exterior fasteners, you can usually handle it in under two hours.

Hire a pro or handyman when the mounting surface is finished masonry, stucco, brick veneer, stone, metal siding, a shared HOA wall, or any wall where water intrusion is a concern. Penetrating exterior cladding carelessly can cause more damage than the crusher is worth. A pro can mount through the right layer, seal penetrations correctly, and avoid cracking brittle materials.

Also bring in help for commercial or public locations. Schools, clubhouses, shops, and community gardens need sturdier mounting, clear placement, and sometimes accessibility or liability review. A $300 recycling station in a public area should not be attached with hardware chosen from a kitchen drawer.

Safety, Rules, and Outdoor Placement Notes

Manual can crushers are simple, but they still create pinch points. Keep fingers out of the chamber and hinge area. Do not let children operate one unsupervised. Crushed aluminum edges can be sharp, especially if the can tears instead of folding cleanly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rinse or drain cans before crushing. Sticky beer, soda, and seltzer residue attracts insects and creates odors near patios, gardens, and garage entries. You do not need to wash cans like dishes, but they should not be dripping.

Place the crusher under an eave, inside a shed doorway, in a garage, or on a covered patio wall. Daily rain on the pivot and handle will shorten the life of even a decent powder-coated unit. If you must install near an exterior wall, use corrosion-resistant hardware and check the fasteners every few months.

Permits are rarely required for a small residential can crusher mounted inside a garage or shed, but rules can change in shared spaces. Check HOA guidelines, lease restrictions, and community garden rules before drilling into common walls, fences, posts, or clubhouse structures. For public or commercial areas, confirm who owns maintenance and who empties the bin.

Common Buying and Installation Mistakes

The most expensive mistake is buying a crusher before checking the recycling rule. If your single-stream hauler wants cans uncrushed, the best crusher is still the wrong tool for that stream.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The second mistake is weak mounting. Short screws into siding, drywall anchors, or fence boards will loosen. The handle action creates repeated leverage. Mount to framing, posts, masonry, or a structural backer.

The third mistake is buying for the wrong can size. A 12 oz-only unit may be cheap, but it is frustrating if your household uses 16 oz tallboys or larger cans. Check the tallest can you regularly use before drilling holes.

Other common problems are predictable: installing the crusher in direct rain, mounting it too high, letting kids use it unsupervised, crushing dirty cans, mixing crushed cans into yard waste, and assuming plastic bottles belong in the same device. A crusher should simplify recycling, not create contamination or safety issues.

If you only use standard 12 oz cans and want the lowest cost, a $10 to $25 basic wall crusher is fine in a dry garage. If many people will use the station, an auto-dispensing ergonomic unit around $35 to $50 is cleaner. If your household or shop uses tall cans, 24 oz cans, or 32 oz cans, spend $50 to $90 on a heavier multi-size crusher and mount it like a real piece of hardware.

A can crusher is a small upgrade, but done correctly it makes outdoor recycling neater, faster, and less annoying. Done carelessly, it becomes a rusty lever on a loose wall. The difference is local recycling rules, the right can capacity, and a mount that is built to take repeated force.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I crush aluminum cans before putting them in curbside recycling?

Only if your local hauler allows it. The EPA says aluminum cans generally should not be crushed in single-stream recycling because flattened cans can be harder for sorting equipment to identify. Crushing is usually more useful for deposit returns, scrap, or separate aluminum collection.

What is the best can crusher for outdoor use?

For most homes, the best outdoor can crusher is a powder-coated steel wall-mounted model that handles 12 oz and 16 oz cans. Mount it under cover on solid framing or a 2×6 backer board, with a dedicated recycling bin below.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Can a wall-mounted can crusher be installed on a fence?

Only if the fence has a solid post or structural backing strong enough for repeated pulling force. Do not mount a crusher to thin fence pickets. A shed post, garage stud wall, masonry wall, or reinforced backer board is usually better.

What size can crusher do I need for 12 oz and 16 oz cans?

Buy a crusher specifically rated for both 12 oz and 16 oz cans. A 12 oz-only crusher may not accept tallboys, energy drink cans, or larger beer cans. If you use 24 oz or 32 oz cans, choose a heavy-duty multi-size model.

Do outdoor can crushers rust?

Yes, especially if they are mounted in direct rain or made with low-grade hardware. Powder-coated steel, aluminum bodies, stainless rods, plated fasteners, and covered placement reduce rust. Keep the pivot dry when possible.

Are pneumatic or electric can crushers worth it for homeowners?

Usually not. Most homeowners are better served by a $25 to $60 manual wall-mounted crusher. Pneumatic or electric units make sense only for very high can volume, shop use, or commercial recycling workflows.
