Best Fryers for Using Less Added Oil: Air Fryers vs. Deep Fryers

For less added oil in food, an air fryer is the relevant choice—not a traditional deep fryer. Learn how the methods differ and what to consider before buying.

If your goal is to add less oil to food, choose an air fryer rather than a traditional deep fryer. Air fryers circulate hot air and can crisp suitable foods with little or no added oil; deep fryers cook by submerging food in hot oil. They are different appliances, and an air fryer does not deep-fry food.

Which fryer uses less oil in the food?

A countertop air fryer is the relevant choice when “less oil” means less added oil in the finished food. The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service describes air fryers as cooking food in a basket with circulating hot air, while deep frying means submerging food in very hot oil. The USDA’s air-frying guidance and the British Heart Foundation’s explanation characterize air frying as a hot-air cooking method, akin to a compact convection oven.

Air frying can reproduce some crisp textures, but it does not use the same cooking method as deep frying. If instead you mean an appliance that holds less oil in its reservoir, that is a separate issue: the Department of Energy lists low oil volume as a feature to consider in certain commercial gas fryers. That commercial equipment specification does not establish that food cooked in a household deep fryer will contain less oil. See the DOE commercial fryer purchasing guidance.

How much oil does an air fryer need?

It depends on the food and recipe. The British Heart Foundation gives an illustrative recipe quantity of 1 tablespoon of oil for 1 kg of potatoes for four people; this is an example, not a universal amount for every recipe or appliance. Foods that already contain fat may need no added oil. Frozen foods that were pre-fried, such as fries or nuggets, may also need no extra oil.

Manufacturer instructions can differ. Philips says its Airfryer does not require oil to cook, but that adding a little oil directly to some fresh ingredients can help form a crisp layer and improve taste. Its guidance says not to pour oil into the appliance pan; it gives half a tablespoon for a homemade potato recipe on the specific models covered by that page. Check the instructions for your appliance and recipe rather than treating that quantity as a general rule: Philips Airfryer oil guidance.

Does air frying make food healthier?

Using less added oil can reduce the fat contributed by cooking compared with deep frying for foods suited to air frying. It does not make every air-fried food healthy, make food fat-free, or remove salt, sugar, and fat already present in ingredients or prepared foods. Food choice and preparation still matter.

Consider the food you cook, not just the appliance’s marketing. Air frying may change texture and cooking time, but it does not make an already lean food more nutritious. Check ingredient and nutrition information and follow food-specific cooking directions.

What to consider when choosing an air fryer

  • Capacity and footprint: Match the basket or tray space to the batch sizes you expect to cook and the counter or storage space available. Capacity alone does not establish cooking quality.
  • Foods and cooking method: Think about whether you mainly want to crisp foods that traditionally use added oil, or cook foods that need little or none. An air fryer is not a substitute for every cooking method.
  • Oil instructions: Check whether the manufacturer recommends oil for fresh ingredients and whether pre-fried frozen foods need additional oil. Follow the directions for the exact appliance model.
  • Handling and cleanup: Look for a basket or tray that you can remove and handle safely. Read the manual for cleaning and maintenance instructions.
  • Health claims: Treat “healthy” and “low oil” as prompts to check how the appliance cooks and what the recipe requires, not as proof of a specific health benefit.

There is not enough current comparative evidence here to identify a best household model, verify current prices, or rank air fryers by performance. A model-level recommendation needs up-to-date comparisons; the supported category-level choice for using less added oil is an air fryer.

Safe use: air frying and deep frying

Air fryers

Follow the appliance manual and food-package directions where available. USDA FSIS advises checking food with a clean food thermometer; its consumer guidance gives safe minimum internal temperatures of 165°F for poultry and 145°F for fish and shellfish. The agency also cautions against cooking raw, stuffed breaded chicken breast products in an air fryer. See the USDA air-frying guidance.

Traditional deep fryers

  • Read the fryer manual before use. Keep the fryer off and away from water while filling it.
  • Avoid overcrowding. Do not add food while the basket is submerged.
  • Never leave hot oil unattended, and let it cool before cleaning. Hot oil can cause burns and fires; a grease fire needs an emergency response.

USDA FSIS lists approximate smoke points of about 450°F for peanut, safflower, and soybean oils; 445°F for grapeseed; 435°F for canola; and 410°F for corn, olive, sesame, sunflower, and vegetable oils. These are approximate figures from its guidance, not exact values that apply universally to every oil or cooking condition. The agency notes that oil begins to break down at its smoke point. Consult the USDA deep-fat frying guidance.
