For shredding cheese and vegetables, the first thing to check is whether a food processor includes a dedicated shredding disc. A chopping blade is not a substitute. Among the models covered here, the right choice depends on batch size, desired shred sizes, storage space, and how the machine performed with the ingredients you plan to prep.
Which food processor is best for shredding?
There is no single winner for every kitchen. The Magimix 4200XL earned the strongest cheese score in TechGearLab’s published comparison, while the Breville Sous Chef 16 Pro led its carrot results. Those are results for the specific models tested—not guarantees for every processor or evidence about a newer model with a similar name.
For current model specifications, the Cuisinart Custom 14 DFP-14BCNY offers a 14-cup bowl and medium shredding disc; KitchenAid’s KFP1318 has a 13-cup bowl and reversible fine/medium disc; and Breville’s Sous Chef 16 BFP810 has a 16-cup bowl and reversible shredder disc. Choose based on the quantities and shred styles you need, then confirm the exact model and included accessories before buying.
Top picks by kitchen and prep needs
| Model | Best fit | Shredding and capacity | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cuisinart Custom 14 DFP-14BCNY | Large batches and general home prep | 14-cup bowl; medium shredding disc; extra-large feed tube | One shred size is listed. The official page lists a 720-watt motor; that figure alone does not establish shredding quality. |
| KitchenAid KFP1318 | Mid-to-large batches with a choice of two shred sizes | 13-cup bowl; reversible fine/medium shredding disc | Includes an in-bowl storage caddy; check whether its size and accessory set suit your storage space. |
| Breville Sous Chef 16 BFP810 | Large capacity and included accessories | 16-cup bowl; reversible shredder disc; adjustable slicer | Breville specifies a 1450W motor and a 5.5-inch maximum feed-chute option. Independent scores cited below are for the predecessor Pro, not this model. |
| Magimix 4200XL | Versatility and multiple shred sizes | TechRadar lists a 14-cup/3-liter capacity and two shredding discs | TechRadar notes expense, bulk, and a single speed. TechGearLab reported strong potato and carrot results for its tested 4200XL. Regional naming and availability may differ. |
| Cuisinart FlexPrep 1.1L | Compact kitchens and small quantities | TechRadar describes a reversible fine/medium disc and 1.1-liter bowl | TechRadar found some results uneven and said the small bowl limits quantities; it is not the natural choice for large prep jobs. |
What independent shredding tests show
TechGearLab says it tested eight food processors in more than 30 side-by-side tasks. Its June 11, 2025 update includes shredding trials with potatoes, carrots, and a large block of cheese. The scores below are that publisher’s ratings out of 10, shown in cheese/potato/carrot order.
#1 Best Overall
- Built-in bowl scraper saves time. Quickly process ingredients without stopping to use a spatula. Simply move the scraper from side-to-side to scrape the bowl while the food processor is running or the power is off — no need to remove the lid.
- Slice, shred, chop, mix and puree with 2 versatile attachments. The Hamilton Beach food processor gives you 5 processing functions and includes a stainless steel slicing/shredding disc and chopping/pureeing blade so you can tackle every job with ease.
- Powerful 450 watt motor. Make healthy salads, homemade salsa, hearty acai bowls and more. The 450 watt motor easily powers through the toughest ingredients, so you can spend less time processing and more time enjoying.
- Precise control with 2 speeds plus pulse. The low and high speeds plus pulse give you the control you need for a variety of recipes. Use the high speed when you need more power and select the low speed for processing or mixing delicate foods.
- 10 cup bowl capacity. The generous 10 cup bowl fits large volumes of food all at once, and the large feed chute saves you time by reducing the need to pre-cut food before processing or using as a vegetable chopper.
| Model tested | Cheese | Potato | Carrot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Magimix 4200XL | 7 | 9 | 8 |
| Breville Sous Chef 16 Pro | 5 | 8 | 10 |
| Ninja Professional | 6 | 7 | 8 |
| Hamilton Beach | 6 | 6 | 6 |
| Vitamix 12-Cup | 6 | 5 | 7 |
| Cuisinart Custom 14 | 4 | 5 | 8 |
| BLACK+DECKER 8-Cup | 5 | 2 | 2 |
| KitchenAid 5-Cup | 4 | 1 | 2 |
These scores demonstrate why performance should be considered by ingredient: the Magimix led the listed cheese and potato results, while the tested Breville Pro led for carrots. They are a single publisher’s test results, not a prediction of every unit’s output.
Model generation matters. TechGearLab says the Sous Chef 16 Pro it tested was replaced by the Sous Chef 16. Its Pro scores should not be presented as test results for the current BFP810. Likewise, the tested KitchenAid was a 5-Cup model, not the KFP1318.

Which? says its processor assessments cover chopping, slicing, grating, mixing, kneading, blending, noise, use, and cleaning. Its visible guide reports 26 processors tested and was last checked in July 2026; dates tested vary, and some detailed scores are member-restricted. Its partial public information does not support inferring a complete product ranking.
How to choose a processor for shredding
Confirm the disc is included
Look for a shredding or grating disc in the exact model’s included-accessories list. Manufacturers identify a medium shredding disc for the Cuisinart Custom 14, a reversible fine/medium disc for the KitchenAid KFP1318, and a reversible shredder disc for the Breville Sous Chef 16. A processor sold in multiple configurations may not include the same accessories in every package.

Match bowl capacity to batch size
A 13- to 16-cup bowl can be useful when preparing a lot of cheese or vegetables at once, but a larger machine can demand more counter and cupboard space. A compact 1.1-liter model may make more sense for small quantities, though repeated batches can erase that convenience when cooking for a group.
Check feed-chute size and shred options
A wider feed chute can reduce the need to cut ingredients into small pieces before processing. The Cuisinart Custom 14 is listed with an extra-large feed tube, while Breville specifies a 5.5-inch maximum feed-chute option for the BFP810. Fine and medium discs provide a choice of texture; a single medium disc is simpler if that is all you use.

Consider cleanup and storage
Disc and bowl cleanup matters when shredding is part of routine meal prep. Cuisinart says the Custom 14’s parts, except the motor base, are dishwasher-safe. KitchenAid lists an in-bowl storage caddy for the KFP1318. Check the instructions for the exact model and account for the space needed to store discs safely.
Use performance evidence carefully
Do not treat wattage or bowl capacity as a shredding score. Compare independent results for the ingredients you actually use, and check that the review tested the same model generation you are considering. TechGearLab’s published comparison is useful for its named models and tasks, but it is not a complete census of processors available in 2026.
