Best Food Processors for Puree: Top Choices for Thick, Smooth Blends

Food processors suit thick purees, hummus, and dips; blenders generally do better with silky, pourable results. Compare tested models and choose by batch size, texture, and cleanup needs.

For thick purees, hummus, dips, and mixtures that should retain some body, a food processor is a practical choice. For a very smooth, pourable soup or liquid puree, a blender is generally better: a processor’s wide bowl makes it harder to blend ingredients into a uniformly silky texture. Among tested processors, the Breville Sous Chef 16 Pro is a strong full-size option for thick purees, while smaller-batch and capacity needs may point to different models.

Choose by the texture you want

Thick purees, hummus, and dips

A food processor works well when the mixture is dense or thick and you want control over its texture. It can also handle the chopping, slicing, and shredding that make a processor useful beyond pureeing.

Very smooth, liquid purees

If your priority is a fine, pourable result—such as a smooth soup or smoothie—consider a blender. Epicurious notes that a processor’s wide bowl is less suited to thoroughly blending ingredients into a super-smooth puree. A processor may still work for some recipes, but a silky result is not assured by the appliance category alone. Epicurious’s 2025 food processor review explains the distinction.

Food processors with relevant test evidence

These recommendations come from separate reviews using different models, recipes, dates, and scoring methods. They are useful for matching a processor to a need, not for constructing a single head-to-head ranking.

Cuisinart 14 Cup Custom Larger batches and hummus Tom’s Guide identifies it as its best tested model, reporting a 14-cup capacity, 720-watt output, and a measured noise level of 65.2 dB for its test unit. Its hummus test also compared favorably with the Magimix 14 Cup. Noise results are reviewer measurements, not a guarantee for other units or settings. Tom’s Guide guide
Cuisinart Elemental 8 Cup Smaller batches Tom’s Guide found that its smaller capacity helped it puree hummus. The same review notes that its lower-power motor may struggle more with tougher recipes. Tom’s Guide guide

How to choose the right processor for puree

Match bowl size to your usual batch

A large bowl is convenient for meal prep, but it is not automatically better for every puree. Tom’s Guide found its Cuisinart Elemental 8 Cup effective for hummus, while the large bowl on the GE 12 Cup test unit was not effective for that task. Consider the amount you typically make, not just the maximum stated capacity.

Check sustained-operation guidance

Thick mixtures can take time to process. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for run time and rest periods rather than assuming a processor can run continuously. Tom’s Guide reports that its Ninja Professional Food Processor shut off automatically before it could run long enough for the publication’s hummus test. That is a test-specific observation, not a claim about every Ninja model or recipe.

Look beyond motor wattage

Motor power is one specification, but it does not establish puree quality by itself. Confirm the current model and price

Product names, configurations, retailer listings, and prices can change. TechGearLab listed a $500 list price for the Breville Sous Chef 16 Pro when its review was updated June 11, 2025; that historical figure is not a current-price quote. Check the seller’s live listing and confirm the model name and included accessories before purchasing.

What the test numbers do—and do not—tell you

  • TechGearLab’s 8.0 puree score for the Breville Sous Chef 16 Pro reflects that publication’s scoring system and test recipes; it is not directly comparable with another publisher’s score.
  • Tom’s Guide reported 65.2 dB for its Cuisinart 14 Cup Custom test unit and 79.2 dBA for its Magimix 14 Cup test unit. Those measurements use the publication’s testing context and do not promise the same noise level in every kitchen.
  • Which? reports testing 26 food processors on a page last checked July 2026, with test dates spanning May 2020 and 2021–2024. Its detailed scores require membership.
