- Capacity: Check the exact model’s DOE/SACC or other applicable manufacturer-declared metric, and note the unit’s speed type. - Exhaust setup: Confirm whether the unit’s arrangement and supplied hardware work for the room. Duct and infiltration effects are included in DOE’s adjusted capacity procedure; a dual-duct design should not be assumed superior without model-specific evidence.
- Window and route: Check window style and opening dimensions, panel fit, hose length, outlet location and the path from AC to window.
- Efficiency and noise: Compare the applicable rating and published noise information for the exact model. The cited sources do not provide a directly comparable noise dataset across models, and convenience features do not establish cooling performance.
- Drainage and upkeep: Check the model’s condensate instructions, filter access and service documentation. Self-evaporating operation does not establish that draining is unnecessary in every climate or use case.

How many BTUs do you need?

BLACK+DECKER says the BPT05WTBA is rated for spaces up to 150 square feet, but the maker’s figure is not a promise for rooms with different sun exposure, insulation, occupancy or heat loads. The DOE procedure adjusts portable-AC capacity for duct heat transfer and infiltration air, so the metric and model matter as much as the printed number.

Consumer Analysis updated its comparison on September 25, 2026, and says it bought and tested additional units, including a controlled cooling test in a 100-square-foot room. The figures and recommendations below are that publisher’s reported model data, not universal rankings or independent certification of every current retail listing.

BLACK+DECKER lists its BPT05WTBA at 5,000 BTU SACC/CEC (8,500 BTU ASHRAE), with claimed coverage up to 150 square feet. The manufacturer lists cooling, fan and dehumidifying modes, a 4.9-foot hose and an included window adapter. It says the unit fits double-hung or sliding windows, not crank windows, and specifies placement on a firm, smooth, level floor. Check the BPT05WTBA product details and confirm that the opening and exhaust route work in your room.
Check whether a model is still sold
A published rating does not mean a unit is currently available. GE’s APHS08WWF page lists an 8,000 BTU DOE SACC rating but says the model is no longer manufactured and is out of stock online. Will a portable AC fit your window?
Do not assume a portable unit works with every window. The BPT05WTBA, for instance, is listed for double-hung and sliding windows, but not crank windows. Its manufacturer specifies a 4.9-foot hose and an included window adapter. Measure the opening, check the supplied panel and hose route, and consult the exact model’s installation instructions before choosing a location.
What the DOE rating date means
The Department of Energy’s 2023 final rule states that portable air conditioners manufactured on or after January 10, 2025 are covered by the cited standards provisions. Its test procedure defines adjusted capacity; for single-speed units, the rule states: “For single-speed portable air conditioners, SACC is seasonally adjusted cooling capacity in Btu/h, as determined in appendix CC of subpart B of this part.” For variable-speed units, the applicable compliance context distinguishes SACC and SACCFull. Check the exact model documentation rather than applying one figure indiscriminately across different units.
