In lawns, fertilizer can support thicker turf that competes with the weed—but only when the lawn needs those nutrients. For a small patch, the more direct natural approach is to remove the plants, including as much root and rhizome material as possible, before they set seed. In garden beds, hand removal and mulch are more relevant than lawn fertilizer.
Does fertilizer kill yellow wood sorrel?
No. The university extension guidance cited here treats fertilization as part of maintaining healthy, dense turf, not as a herbicide that kills established yellow wood sorrel. Penn State Extension says infestations can be reduced by improving turf density through fertilization, regular mowing, and grasses suited to the site. NC State Extension likewise identifies proper turf maintenance—including fertilization, mowing, and watering—as cultural control.
NC State Extension TurfFiles states: “Proper turf maintenance is the key to control of this weed.” The practical implication is to fertilize for the lawn’s actual needs, not simply because sorrel has appeared. Neither source establishes a particular fertilizer brand, formula, or N-P-K ratio as a sorrel treatment.
Identify the plant before treating it
Yellow wood sorrel, Oxalis stricta, has three heart-shaped leaflets and yellow flowers. It can be mistaken for clover or other Oxalis species. University of Minnesota Extension describes it as typically 6 to 12 inches tall; that is an identification description, not a guaranteed size. Its seed capsules can eject seeds when touched, and the plant also spreads by rhizomes. University of Maryland Extension says ripe capsules can eject seeds as far as 12 feet; the distance is a source-reported possibility, not a prediction for every plant.

Choose a method for the setting
| Setting and infestation | Practical natural approach | Fertilizer’s role |
|---|---|---|
| Lawn, a few plants | Pull when the soil is moist, remove as much root and rhizome material as possible, and act before seed capsules mature. | Only use fertilizer if the lawn’s needs support it; it is not a direct sorrel killer. |
| Lawn, wider encroachment | Improve turf density with grass suited to the site and appropriate mowing and watering. | Use soil-test-guided fertilization as one part of turf care. |
| Garden bed, a small patch | Hand-remove plants and roots; use mulch to reduce seed germination. | Lawn fertilizer is not a garden-bed sorrel treatment. |
For a few plants in a lawn
- Check that the plant is yellow wood sorrel rather than clover or another Oxalis.
- Pull it while the soil is moist, which makes removal easier, and take out as much root and rhizome material as possible.
- Remove plants before seed capsules mature. Avoid disturbing mature capsules where possible, because they can scatter seed.
For a lawn with recurring or widespread sorrel
Focus on the conditions that let weeds occupy open ground: thin turf and care that does not suit the site. Choose turfgrass adapted to local conditions, mow and water appropriately, and fertilize according to soil-test results and local extension guidance. Penn State’s turf-density recommendation is summarized in its yellow woodsorrel guidance; NC State’s advice appears in its yellow woodsorrel TurfFiles entry.

For a garden bed
Hand removal is appropriate for small patches; remove roots and rhizomes and work before seed formation. Mulch can reduce germination. Do not transfer lawn fertilizer or pesticide directions to flower or vegetable beds unless the product label specifically permits that use.

Yellow wood sorrel’s presence does not reliably diagnose a soil problem. UF/IFAS lists it among perennial weeds associated with alkaline, high-pH soils in a Florida lawns-and-landscapes guide, but also cautions that one or two weeds are not necessarily diagnostic and that adaptable weeds can occur across conditions. A soil test is the reliable way to determine pH and fertility; do not assume sorrel proves that soil is alkaline, acidic, or deficient in a nutrient.

UF/IFAS recommends laboratory testing for fertility and pH concerns. A home soil test kit may serve as a screening convenience, but it does not remove sorrel or replace laboratory guidance. Overfertilizing—particularly with soluble or quick-release fertilizer—can harm desirable plants and may make weeds more competitive. Follow local recommendations and the fertilizer label, since schedules and rules vary by location and turf type. See the UF/IFAS lawns and landscapes guidance.
