Choose by the food you make, the time you actually save, and the appliance’s capacity, functions and cleanup—not by a speed claim alone.
What counts as a fast cooker?
“Fast cooker” is a broad shopping term, not one appliance category. This guide focuses on electric pressure cookers and multi-cookers because they can pressure-cook meals and, depending on the model, handle additional tasks. A stovetop pressure cooker is another pressure-cooking option; a dedicated air fryer is designed for crisping, while a rice cooker is for rice-focused cooking. These categories are not interchangeable.
There is no established independent comparison here that identifies one cooker as objectively fastest across all meal types. A useful choice depends on whether you want moist pressure-cooked dishes, crisp food, or dependable rice, and on the full time from preparation through serving.
What an electric multi-cooker can do
Instant Pot Duo 6QT: a documented example
Instant Pot describes its Duo 6QT as a 1,000-watt, six-quart multi-use pressure cooker with seven functions: pressure cook, slow cook, sauté, steam, make rice, make yogurt and keep warm. The manufacturer says the six-quart size is suitable for up to six servings. These are manufacturer specifications and guidance, not independent comparative test results. Instant Pot states that the Duo can “Cook up to 70% faster than traditional slow cooking methods.” That is the maker’s claim against the stated baseline of traditional slow cooking; it does not establish a 70% saving against stovetop pressure cooking, air frying or every recipe. Nor does it mean a meal is ready in that much less total time: ingredients may need preparation, the cooker takes time to reach pressure, and pressure release adds time before the lid can be opened.
When a pressure-and-air-fry combination makes sense
The Instant Pot Duo Crisp 6QT pairs a pressure-cooking lid with an air-frying lid. That combination may suit someone who wants pressure-cooked food and the option to crisp or brown it in the same appliance. It is a feature-based possibility, not a tested speed or performance recommendation; comparative results are not established here. How to choose a fast cooker for your kitchen
Start with the food you want to make
- One-pot meals and faster moist cooking: Consider an electric or stovetop pressure cooker.
- Crisp finishes: Consider an air fryer, or a pressure-and-air-fry combination if you will use both functions.
- Rice as the main job: A dedicated rice cooker may be a better fit than a multi-cooker with a rice setting.
Match capacity to servings and batches
Capacity affects both the amount you can cook and the appliance’s place on your counter. The Duo 6QT’s manufacturer describes it as suitable for up to six servings; actual portions vary with the recipe and how much food you serve. If you cook in batches, consider whether the listed capacity meets that routine rather than relying only on a household-size label.
Pay for functions you will use
A multi-cooker can consolidate tasks: the Duo’s listed functions include pressure cooking, slow cooking, sautéing, steaming, rice, yogurt and keep warm. If you only need one task, a dedicated appliance may be simpler to store and operate. Compare the exact model’s functions before buying; settings differ between products.

Check the footprint, cleaning and parts
The Duo 6QT product page lists dimensions of 12.2 × 12.5 × 13.4 inches. Measure the counter or cupboard space you intend to use, and account for clearance to open the lid and safely release steam. Instant Pot describes the Duo’s inner pot and lid as dishwasher-safe. It also lists a 6QT replacement stainless-steel inner pot compatible with most of its six-quart multi-use pressure cookers; verify compatibility with your exact model before ordering. Pressure-release methods are not interchangeable for every food. Follow the manual for the exact model. Instant Pot’s Duo guidance says to keep your face, hands and exposed skin away from the steam-release handle and float valve during operation and while residual pressure remains, and not to lean over the cooker when removing the lid. It advises against quick release for fatty, oily, thick or high-starch foods and foods that expand, with examples including stews, chili, pasta, congee, beans and grains. Consult the manufacturer’s product and safety guidance and your model’s manual.
