Choose a textile made and specified for upholstery, then compare how it feels, looks and cleans against the way the headboard will be used. For a fixed, non-removable cover, the fabric’s care instructions deserve particular attention.
What matters when choosing headboard fabric?
Start with the actual fabric specification, not just its fiber name. Fibers and weave alone do not establish whether a textile is suitable for upholstery, easy to clean or durable. Consider the texture against your head, contact with hair or skin products, household use, light exposure and the cleaning routine you can manage. FibreGuard’s headboard fabric guidance discusses these considerations and its own performance fabrics.
- Upholstery suitability: Confirm that the supplier approves the particular fabric for upholstery and for your intended application.
- Cleaning: Read the exact care instructions. Polyester, cotton, velvet and blends are not automatically washable or easy-care.
- Appearance: Check color, pattern scale, pile direction and how the surface looks when viewed vertically.
- Performance details: Compare the documented cleaning method, colorfastness, construction and any abrasion information, including the test method.
How do the main fabric options compare?
| Fabric family | Why consider it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Linen, cotton or blends | Can suit relaxed, natural or timeless interiors; Alma describes linen and cotton as versatile options. | Verify the actual blend, upholstery suitability, care directions and performance data. A general description does not establish that every linen or cotton fabric is durable or easy to clean. See Alma’s headboard guide. |
| Velvet | Offers a plush, tactile surface with a light-catching appearance. FibreGuard notes that a vertical headboard surface is less prone to crushing than a sofa seat. | Velvet types vary. Check pile direction, cleaning instructions and how pressure marks appear; request details for the specific fabric. See FibreGuard’s guidance and Alma’s guide. |
| Bouclé | Its looped texture can add warmth and suit contemporary interiors, as Alma describes. | Assess whether the texture and care suit your household. The cited sources do not establish a universal snagging or durability result for all bouclés. See Alma’s guide. |
| Chenille or textured plain fabric | FibreGuard lists these among soft upholstery options for headboards. | Confirm upholstery suitability, cleanability, abrasion information, colorfastness and construction for the particular textile. See FibreGuard’s guidance. |
| Printed or embroidered fabric | Can make the headboard a focal point; Alma recommends scaling prints to the headboard and identifies embroidery as a decorative option. | Check pattern repeat and orientation, required yardage, motif direction and whether the supplier approves the fabric for upholstery. See Alma’s guide and FibreGuard’s guidance. |
| Performance fabric | May be worth considering when stain handling and cleaning are priorities. | Treat performance claims as specific to the manufacturer and product. Review the care directions and supporting documentation; do not assume every performance fabric suits every use. See FibreGuard’s guidance. |
These are conditional comparisons, not controlled tests of every fabric in each family. No family should be called “pet-proof,” “stain-proof” or inherently long-lasting without evidence about the exact textile.
Which headboard fabrics are easiest to clean?
The fabric’s stated care instructions are the dependable way to answer this; its fiber or finish name alone is not enough. For example, Pottery Barn’s 2026 upholstery guide says its named Performance Plush Velvet and Performance Slub Cotton can be spot cleaned and machine washed cold on a gentle cycle. That is guidance for those named products, not a rule for all velvet or cotton.

How should you interpret abrasion figures?
Abrasion tests measure surface wear under standardized conditions. They do not reproduce every home’s use, cleaning practices, furniture construction or expectations for appearance. The Association for Contract Textiles (ACT) publishes voluntary guidance for woven upholstery, but these are contract-textile guidelines, not a headboard-specific legal standard.

| ACT application category | Wyzenbeek guidance | Martindale guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Low traffic/private spaces | 15,000 double rubs | 20,000 cycles |
| High traffic/public spaces | 30,000 double rubs | 40,000 cycles |
These figures are ACT’s current voluntary woven-upholstery guidelines, accessed in 2026: low-traffic/private and high-traffic/public. ACT states that the Wyzenbeek and Martindale methods do not correlate, so their counts should not be converted or directly compared. Its abrasion guidance also notes test-to-test variation of up to 60 percent for some woven structures and says counts above 100,000 have not been shown to reliably indicate increased fabric lifespan. A high number alone is not a dependable lifespan prediction.
Retailer figures are useful only with their source and method kept attached. Pottery Barn’s 2026 guide lists a 100,000 rub count for Performance Plush Velvet and 50,000 for Performance Slub Cotton; the guide does not clarify the test method for those figures. They therefore should not be equated with ACT’s Wyzenbeek or Martindale thresholds.

Should you order a fabric sample first?
Yes. View a sample vertically in the bedroom’s lighting before committing. Color and pattern can read differently on a finished headboard than on a small swatch, and pile direction can change a velvet’s appearance. Alma and FibreGuard both recommend evaluating samples in context: Alma’s guide and FibreGuard’s guidance.
What should DIY upholsterers confirm?
For a do-it-yourself project, search for upholstery fabric by the yard and verify the fabric details with the seller before ordering. Pottery Barn’s 2026 guide gives examples of 100% polyester Performance Plush Velvet and 100% cotton Performance Slub; those examples establish fiber content for those named products, not availability at other retailers.

- Fiber content and whether the supplier approves the textile for upholstery.
- Cleaning directions and any documented performance information.
- The abrasion method, if a rub or cycle count is provided.
- Fabric width, pattern repeat and pile or print direction.
- Required yardage for your dimensions and upholstery method.
Yardage cannot be estimated reliably without the headboard dimensions, fabric width, pattern repeat and direction of the pile or print. Ask the supplier or upholsterer to calculate it for the specific design.
What changes for a public or hospitality project?
For public or hospitality use, obtain current supplier documentation for the fabric’s applicable performance and fire-safety requirements, and verify the rules that apply to the project’s location. ACT notes that its voluntary guidelines depend on construction, application and location and may not reflect every law or requirement. Its low-traffic and high-traffic abrasion guidance should not substitute for project-specific compliance checks.
