For a high-capacity residential washer, start by comparing published capacity, loading style, dimensions and the bulky items you wash—not by assuming “extra large” has one official meaning. The manufacturer examples covered here range from 5.0 to 5.5 cu. ft., but specifications alone do not establish which machine cleans best or offers the best value. The right fit depends on your laundry volume, space and preferences.
What counts as a large-capacity washer?
There is no single industry-wide definition of “large” or “extra large.” Whirlpool describes 4.5 cu. ft. or more as generally large and calls 5.3 cu. ft. residential washers extra large or oversized; Maytag also describes capacity above 4.5 cu. ft. as large. These are manufacturer guidelines, not a universal standard.
In practical terms, the U.S. manufacturer examples below offer 5.0–5.5 cu. ft. of capacity. Capacity can help you compare machines, but it does not tell you whether a washer will fit your home or suit your usual loads.

How to choose a washer for your laundry and space
Match capacity to the loads you actually wash
A larger drum can be useful if you regularly wash bulky bedding or larger loads. But a bigger washer is not automatically better: it may take up more space, and Maytag notes that larger machines tend to use more water. Choose capacity for your household’s routine rather than for the largest number on a product page.

Choose a loading style that works in your room
Front-load washers are designed for stacking and may suit a smaller laundry room when paired with a compatible dryer and kit. Top-load models avoid a front door that swings into the room, though you still need enough overhead space to open the lid. Measure the room and consider how you move laundry in and out.
For top-load washers, compare agitator and impeller designs where both are available. Manufacturer guidance describes impellers as taking up less tub space, which can leave more room for bulky loads. Check the specific model’s design and guidance rather than assuming every top-loader handles bedding the same way.
Measure the full installation and delivery route
Compare the washer’s full product dimensions with the available laundry space, including the depth needed for hoses and connections, door or lid clearance, and any manufacturer-required installation clearances. Also measure doorways, halls and turns along the delivery route. Samsung’s category examples vary in dimensions, and Maytag advises checking that the machine fits the laundry area. A listed capacity does not guarantee a physical fit.
Compare features that solve a real chore
Dispenser and connected features may matter if they simplify your routine. For example, LG lists automatic dispensing and smart functions for the WM6700HBA, while Whirlpool lists a Load & Go XL Plus dispenser and app control for the WFW9620HC. Compare the features on the exact model page and prioritize those you expect to use.

Will a large washer fit a king-size comforter?
A washer with 4.5 cu. ft. or more may typically accommodate a king-size comforter, according to Whirlpool and Maytag. That is general manufacturer guidance, not a guarantee for every comforter or machine. Check the comforter’s care label and the washer’s instructions; heavy or especially bulky filling may require a commercial-size machine.
Leave enough room for items to move in the drum. Whirlpool cautions that overfilling can reduce cleaning performance and damage the appliance over time. If a comforter is packed tightly into the tub, use a larger-capacity machine or an appropriate laundromat rather than forcing it into the load.

- Capacity: Compare published cubic-foot capacity with your regular loads and bulky items.
- Format: Decide between front-load and top-load, and check whether an agitator or impeller is a better fit for your typical laundry.
- Dimensions and access: Confirm the machine fits the laundry area, required clearances and delivery route.
- Bulky-item guidance: Check the care label and the exact washer’s instructions for comforters, rugs or other large items.
- Features: Choose dispensers, cycles or app functions based on practical needs, not feature count alone.
- Current listing: Verify today’s specifications and availability on the manufacturer’s page; prices and product lineups change.
