There is no extension cord that should be recommended for a portable electric space heater. In the United States, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) all advise plugging a space heater directly into an appropriate wall receptacle—not into an extension cord, power strip, surge protector, or cord reel.
If the heater’s factory cord cannot safely reach the outlet, move the heater or have the electrical installation assessed by a qualified electrician. Buying a longer or heavier-duty cord is not the safe solution.

Why extension cords are unsafe with portable heaters
A portable electric heater is a high-wattage, heat-producing appliance. Many household heaters draw substantial current continuously while operating. Adding an extension cord creates another flexible-cord run, plug, and connection point in the circuit.
Heat can build up when conductors or connections are overloaded, damaged, loose, pinched, or covered. A poor connection at the heater plug, extension-cord plug, or wall receptacle can create localized resistance and overheating even when the cord appears heavy enough.

CPSC staff assessments of portable-heater incidents have reported that extension-cord use was often attributed as the cause of heater-related incidents. The same assessments identify poor connections and heater power-cord problems as potential contributors to ignition.
That is why a cord’s marketing description does not override heater-specific safety guidance. “Heavy-duty,” “12-gauge,” “outdoor-rated,” “grounded,” and “UL-listed” describe characteristics of a cord; they do not make an extension cord appropriate for a portable electric heater.

No—not for an ordinary portable household electric heater. CPSC says to “never power the heater with an extension cord or power strip.” NFPA likewise says to plug space heaters directly into wall outlets, and ESFI says to plug a space heater directly into an outlet and avoid using an extension cord.
This applies even if the cord is new, short, thick, grounded, rated for outdoor use, or marked by a recognized testing laboratory. Do not use a cord reel, surge protector, or multi-outlet adapter as a substitute either.

What gauge extension cord do I need for a space heater?
None. Gauge is not the deciding factor because the recommended arrangement does not use an extension cord at all.
A thicker conductor can reduce voltage drop and may be suitable for some other temporary electrical loads when properly selected. But it does not eliminate the risks created by an additional plug connection, damaged insulation, loose contacts, routing under rugs, or an unsuitable receptacle or circuit.
Is a 12-gauge extension cord safe for a 1,500-watt heater?
Not according to the heater-specific guidance covered here. A 12-gauge cord is not a safe exception to the instruction to connect a portable heater directly to a suitable wall receptacle.
The heater’s wattage may help explain why the appliance places a significant demand on the circuit, but it does not turn a 12-gauge extension cord into an approved heater connection. Do not use wattage, amperage, cord gauge, or an “extra-heavy-duty” label as permission to ignore the manufacturer’s instructions and fire-safety guidance.

Can I use a heavy-duty or outdoor extension cord?
No. “Heavy-duty” and “outdoor-rated” are not exceptions for portable electric heaters. Outdoor ratings address environmental conditions and construction features; they do not remove the additional connection and overheating risks associated with using an extension cord for a heater.
Similarly, a UL, ETL, or CSA mark on an extension cord does not mean that the cord is approved for every appliance or that it overrides the heater manufacturer’s instructions. ESFI recommends looking for certification from a nationally recognized testing laboratory on the heater itself, and not using a heater with a broken plug or frayed, worn, or damaged cord.

No. Do not plug a portable electric heater into a power strip, surge protector, cord reel, or similar device. These products add connections and can be overloaded by a high-demand heating appliance.
Plug the heater’s factory plug directly into an appropriate wall receptacle. Do not defeat the grounding feature, use a damaged adapter, or force a loose plug into the outlet.

What to do if the heater is too far from the outlet
- Move the heater. Position it so its factory cord reaches the wall receptacle without stretching, pinching, running under a rug, or passing through a doorway where it can be damaged.
- Keep the cord visible. Do not cover the heater cord with carpeting, furniture, blankets, or other materials that can trap heat or conceal damage.
- Use a suitable wall receptacle. Plug the heater directly into the wall. The plug should fit securely, without looseness, sparking, discoloration, or heat.
- Arrange a permanent electrical remedy. If the room lacks a suitably located receptacle, ask a qualified electrician to inspect the installation and determine whether a new or relocated outlet, circuit assessment, or other permanent correction is appropriate.
Do not solve a permanent electrical-layout problem with a longer temporary cord. Local electrical codes and the heater manufacturer’s instructions may impose additional requirements.
Do I need a dedicated outlet for a space heater?
The answer depends on the electrical installation, the heater, local requirements, and what else is connected to the circuit. The key safety rule is not to overload the receptacle or circuit.
NFPA guidance advises not to plug anything else into the same circuit as the space heater where doing so could cause overheating. In practical terms, avoid operating another heat-producing, high-demand appliance on the same receptacle or circuit unless a qualified electrician has confirmed that the installation can safely handle the load.
If breakers trip, lights dim, the receptacle is loose or discolored, or the heater cannot be used without sharing a questionable outlet, stop and have the circuit inspected. Do not repeatedly reset a breaker or hide the problem with another power-distribution device.

Why does my heater plug or outlet get hot?
A hot plug, cord, or outlet is a warning—not a normal operating condition to ignore. It may indicate a damaged heater cord, an overloaded circuit, a loose receptacle, a poor plug connection, or another electrical fault.
- If the heater’s cord or plug is hot, turn off and disconnect the heater, then contact an authorized repair person.
- If the outlet is hot, discolored, loose, sparking, or smells burnt, stop using it and contact a certified or qualified electrician.
- Do not continue operating the heater through an extension cord, power strip, adapter, or visibly damaged outlet.
- Replace a heater with a broken plug or frayed, worn, or damaged cord rather than attempting an improvised repair.
If there is smoke, visible arcing, or an active fire, leave the area and contact emergency services. Use a fire extinguisher only if it is safe to do so and you are trained to use it.
Safe placement matters as much as the electrical connection
Connect the heater directly to the wall, then place it correctly:
- Keep it at least three feet from beds, sofas, curtains, bedding, clothing, paper, and other combustible materials.
- Set it on a stable, level surface where it cannot be knocked over.
- Keep the heater and cord away from wet areas and foot traffic.
- Do not cover the heater or block its air openings.
- Turn it off when leaving the room and do not leave it operating while sleeping.
What to check before using a portable electric heater
- The heater carries certification from a recognized testing laboratory.
- The factory cord and plug are intact, with no cuts, fraying, crushing, melting, or exposed conductors.
- The wall receptacle is not loose, cracked, discolored, warm, or damaged.
- The heater plugs directly into the wall—without an extension cord, power strip, surge protector, cord reel, or adapter.
- The plug fits securely in the receptacle.
- No other high-demand or heat-producing appliance is creating an unsafe shared-circuit load.
- The heater is stable and at least three feet from combustible materials.
- The heater will be turned off when unattended or when occupants go to sleep.
Why “best extension cord” is the wrong comparison
Extension cords can be compared by gauge, length, insulation, grounding, certification, and indoor or outdoor rating for applications where their use is permitted. Those comparisons do not produce a winner for portable electric heaters because the safety recommendation is to avoid the extension-cord connection entirely.
A safer comparison asks different questions:
| Question | Safer decision |
|---|---|
| Can the factory cord reach the outlet? | Move the heater rather than adding an extension cord. |
| Is the plug or receptacle hot, loose, or discolored? | Stop using the equipment and obtain qualified electrical or repair assistance. |
| Is another heat-producing appliance sharing the circuit? | Do not create an overload; have the circuit assessed if necessary. |
| Is the heater cord damaged? | Stop using the heater and follow the manufacturer’s repair or replacement guidance. |
| Is there no suitable outlet? | Have a qualified electrician inspect the installation and determine a permanent remedy. |
Fire-risk context
CPSC’s January 22, 2025 winter-safety release reported that portable heaters, including electric space heaters, were involved in an average of 1,600 fires per year, with averages of 70 deaths and 160 injuries annually in the 2019–2021 period.
A separate CPSC staff assessment reported an average of 1,400 fire-service-attended fires, 50 deaths, and 120 injuries per year attributable to portable electric heaters during 2017–2019. These figures use different periods and scopes and should not be combined or treated as directly comparable. Both sources reinforce the need to follow heater-specific connection and placement guidance.
