The right ergonomic snow shovel depends on how you clear snow. For lifting and throwing, the Snow Joe Shovelution is a spring-assist option; for clearing broad, flat areas mainly by pushing, consider a dual-handle pusher such as Garant’s or a sled-style shovel such as Fiskars’. These are feature-based recommendations, not winners from an independent head-to-head test. Snow Joe says the Shovelution was voted Popular Science’s “Best Ergonomic Snow Shovel for Seniors” in 2023, but that award claim has not been independently verified here.
Which ergonomic snow shovel fits the job?
Ergonomic designs change the way a shovel is held or moved; they are not interchangeable. Match the tool to the motion you need most, then consider blade width, handle geometry, length, and how easily you can maneuver it.
| Design and example | Best suited to | Listed features |
|---|---|---|
| Spring-assist lifting shovel: Snow Joe Shovelution | Lifting and throwing snow | Snow Joe describes the spring-assist handle as changing the leverage of shoveling. Its listings specify a poly blade, aluminum wear strip, and D-grips; 18-inch and 20-inch versions are listed. |
| Curved-handle lifting shovel: Garant ergonomic shovel | Lifting and throwing, with a curved handle design | Garant lists a 14.5-inch poly blade, 45-inch ergonomic aluminum handle, and D-grip. |
| Dual-handle pusher: Garant ergonomic snow pusher | Pushing or scraping snow across a broad, flat area | Garant lists a 19.5-inch pusher with an adjustable secondary handle and says the handle helps reduce back pressure. |
| Sled-style pusher: Fiskars Snow Sled Shovel | Pushing snow rather than repeatedly lifting and throwing it | Fiskars describes a 59-inch push-style design with an angled handle and steel blade. |
These product details come from the manufacturers. They describe features and intended use, not independently measured differences in effort, back strain, or clearing speed.
How to choose by movement and work area
Choose a lifting shovel for snow you need to throw
If snow must be lifted over a bank or moved into a pile, a lifting shovel is the relevant category. Snow Joe’s spring-assist handle and Garant’s curved aluminum handle offer different handle geometries. Compare the blade width and tool length with your reach and the space where you will work; a wider blade can move more snow per pass but may be harder to maneuver when snow is heavy or space is tight.

- SNOW SHOVEL AND SHOW PUSHER: 18-in combination blade shape is ideal for shoveling and pushing snow
- DURABLE BLADE: Nylon wear strip prolongs blade life and does not cause damage to deck, patio and other ground surfaces
- ERGONOMIC HANDLE: Ergonomic handle for easier shoveling; 37.4 in. ergonomic handle for more comfortable shoveling
- OVERSIZED HANDLE: Oversized D-Grip handle for comfortable grip with gloved hands
Choose a pusher when you can move snow ahead of you
On a broad, relatively flat surface, pushing or scraping can avoid some of the repeated lifting involved in throwing snow. Garant’s listed pusher has an adjustable secondary handle; Fiskars’ sled-style shovel is described as a push design. Check that the tool’s width and length suit the route, turning space, and snow depth you actually encounter.
Use the award claim cautiously
Snow Joe’s product page says the Shovelution was voted Popular Science’s “Best Ergonomic Snow Shovel for Seniors” in 2023. The original Popular Science award article is not verified here, so treat this as a manufacturer-reported award, not an independent comparative finding.

Ergonomic features do not remove the health risks of shoveling
Snow shoveling in cold weather can place significant strain on the heart. The American Heart Association (AHA) advises people with known or suspected heart disease or relevant risk factors to arrange for someone else to clear snow. Its precautions for others include starting gradually, pacing the work, dressing in layers, and pushing or sweeping rather than lifting and throwing when possible. Read the AHA’s January 11, 2024 guidance on shoveling and cold temperatures.
In that 2024 article, Barry Franklin, Ph.D., FAHA, said that study participants’ heart rates exceeded 85% of maximal heart rate after two minutes of shoveling—a level he noted is more commonly expected during intense aerobic exercise testing. A shovel’s handle or blade design does not establish that it prevents injury or eliminates the cardiovascular demands of snow removal.

The AHA’s December 15, 2022 account of a Canadian study reports that heavy snow—about 7–8 inches—was associated, compared with no snowfall, with 16% higher odds of men being admitted to hospital with a heart attack and a 34% increase in the chance of men dying from a heart attack. Those figures describe the comparison and population reported by the AHA; they should not be generalized to other groups or conditions.
Quick Recap
Practical checklist before you buy
- Decide whether you will mostly lift and throw, push, or scrape.
- Compare blade width and material with the area and snow conditions you expect to clear.
- Check handle shape, grip style, total length, and adjustability where listed.
- Consider whether you can turn and maneuver the shovel comfortably in your usual clearing space.
- Use the manufacturer’s specifications as product information, not proof that one model is objectively best or prevents injury.
