The best ergonomic office chair with a headrest is the one that fits your body and workstation—not simply the one with the most adjustments. Haworth Fern Executive, Steelcase Gesture with headrest, and Humanscale Freedom with Headrest are manufacturer-documented options, but their features differ and none is established here as a universal winner. Compare headrest position, lumbar and seat fit, recline, and the exact chair configuration before buying.
How to choose a chair with a headrest
Start with fit, then consider features. OSHA says, “A chair that is well-designed and appropriately adjusted is an essential element of a safe and productive computer workstation.” That guidance concerns the chair and workstation together; it does not establish that a headrest by itself improves productivity.
- Check head position: The headrest should support you without pushing your head forward. OSHA’s neutral-posture guidance describes the head as level, forward-facing, and balanced, with the back supported by appropriate lumbar support.
- Check the seat and back: The seat should support you, and the backrest should provide suitable lumbar support. Adjust the chair so your feet and back are supported.
- Try it in context: OSHA recommends trying different chairs and adjusting the chair alongside the monitor, keyboard, and desk. Its purchasing guide advises evaluating comfort and fit over an extended period before purchase.
- Consider how you recline: OSHA’s purchasing guide says, “If the backrest reclines more than about 30 degrees from vertical, a headrest should be provided.” This is general purchasing guidance, not a medical prescription or a promise that a particular chair will feel comfortable.
Manufacturer-documented chairs to compare
The listed features below come from manufacturer pages, not independent comparative testing. They help identify what to check, but do not establish which chair fits you best.
| Chair | Headrest and back support | Other documented features | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Haworth Fern Executive | Haworth describes an adjustable headrest and height-adjustable lumbar support. | Haworth lists its Wave Suspension System and synchronized tilt features. | Confirm the specific configuration and whether the headrest and lumbar adjustments suit your height and preferred sitting positions. |
| Steelcase Gesture with headrest | Steelcase describes an integrated headrest that adjusts vertically, tilts, and rotates 90 degrees. | The product page lists seat and recline adjustments. | Check that the exact listing includes the headrest configuration; the Gesture is not necessarily offered with it in every listing. |
| Humanscale Freedom Chair with Headrest | Humanscale describes a headrest that moves with the sitter and a pivoting backrest. | The cited page advertises a 15-year, 24/7 warranty. | Confirm current warranty terms and regional applicability, as well as whether the headrest movement feels appropriate when you recline. |
How the three options differ
Haworth Fern Executive: adjustable headrest and lumbar support
Haworth’s product information emphasizes an adjustable headrest, height-adjustable lumbar support, and synchronized tilt. This may be worth considering if you want those adjustments available, but specifications alone cannot show whether the headrest will align with your head or whether the backrest fits your posture.

Set up the chair with the rest of your workstation
- Try more than one chair. OSHA recommends trying different chairs before purchase and assessing comfort and fit over an extended period.
- Adjust the chair to support your body. Set the seat and backrest so your feet and back are supported, and position lumbar support appropriately.
- Position the headrest without forcing your head forward. Check that your head remains level, forward-facing, and balanced in the posture you use.
- Adjust the workstation too. Set the monitor, keyboard, and desk in conjunction with the chair; a chair adjustment cannot correct every workstation mismatch.
- Change positions during the day. OSHA advises changing position, stretching, and taking opportunities to stand or walk periodically rather than sitting still for prolonged periods.
What to confirm before purchase
- The exact model and whether the headrest is included in that configuration.
- Whether seat height and depth, lumbar support, recline, and arm adjustments accommodate your body and desk.
- Whether the headrest stays supportive without moving your head out of a neutral position, both upright and reclined.
- Current price, stock, return or trial terms, and warranty conditions in your region. The cited product pages do not establish comparable current prices or availability across markets.
