Match the saw to the wood’s thickness, the cut’s precision, your available support and guides, and your comfort using the tool safely.
What is the best electric saw for cutting wood?
There is no single best saw for every wood project. The shape and scale of the cut are the quickest way to narrow the choice. Hilti’s power saw buying guide treats saw selection as a matter of application and features, while OSHA’s saw guidance describes different tools for different cutting tasks.
| Saw | Best suited to | Key considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Jigsaw | Curves, patterns, templates, and shaped parts, particularly in thinner stock | Choose a blade suited to the material and curve; cutting depth, control, and workpiece support matter. |
| Handheld circular saw | Straight cuts in boards and sheet goods | Check cutting depth, blade suitability, cut direction, and support for the workpiece. |
| Table saw | Repeated, guided straight cuts in a workshop | Requires safe setup, guarding, controlled stock feeding, and suitable support; kickback and blade contact are serious hazards. |
| Band saw | Curves and shaped cuts in stock on a stationary machine | Blade choice, guide adjustment, and secure handling of small stock are important. |
| Miter saw | Angled trim and repeatable miter cuts | A specialized choice for straight or angled cuts; the right model depends on the material and cut dimensions. |
Which saw should I use for curves in wood?
Choose a jigsaw for portable, detailed cuts
A handheld jigsaw is a practical starting point for craft parts, patterns, and intricate curves. OSHA describes jigsaws as useful for precision cutting, intricate curves, and patterns in thin stock. Use a blade intended for the material and turn gradually rather than forcing the blade around a tight radius. A narrower blade is generally better suited to a sharper turn than a wide blade.
Before choosing a jigsaw, check its cutting capacity against the thickness of the stock, how the blade fits the saw, and whether its speed control suits the material and task. Hilti also identifies weight, vibration, and dust extraction as considerations when comparing power saws; dust extraction depends on the tool and compatible setup.
#1 Best Overall
- 5150 RPM motor delivers power and speed to make the most demanding cuts with ease
- High strength and lightweight magnesium shoe provides jobsite durability for long-term cut accuracy
- Optimized rubber over molded comfort grip delivers optimal balance and control
- 0-50° bevel capacity allows for aggressive bevel cuts for a multitude of applications
Consider a band saw for stationary stock work
A band saw’s continuous toothed blade can follow curves through stock at a stationary workstation. OSHA advises guarding the blade as close to the work as practical, adjusting the guide, and selecting a blade appropriate for the curve’s radius. The cutting point cannot be completely enclosed, so fixtures and careful handling are especially important when working with small pieces.
Is a jigsaw or circular saw better for wood projects?
Choose between them based on cut geometry. OSHA summarizes the circular saw’s purpose plainly: “Circular saws are used for straight sawing.” A jigsaw is the better fit when a project requires curves or patterns; a circular saw is generally the better fit for straight cuts in boards or sheet material.

- OUR MOST POWERFUL 20V MAX* CIRCULAR SAW - Cut through tough applications with up to 1,700 MWO.
- UP TO 368 CUTS PER CHARGE** - Make fast cuts with a powerful brushless motor that delivers up to 5,500 RPM (no-load).
- HIGH VERSATILITY - Take on a wide range of materials with a maximum depth of cut of 2-9/16 in. at a 90° and a maximum depth of cut of 2 in. at a 45°.
- ELECTRIC BRAKE Avoid wide, imprecise cuts with an automatic electric brake designed to stop the blade from coasting after the trigger switch is released.
| Project need | More suitable starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Curved outline or craft pattern | Jigsaw | Its narrow reciprocating blade can follow curves and patterns. |
| Long straight cut in a board or sheet | Handheld circular saw | Designed for straight sawing; blade and grain direction determine whether the cut is a rip or crosscut. |
| Repeated straight cuts with a workshop guide | Table saw | A fence can guide stock, but safe setup and feed technique are essential. |
| Angled trim or repeatable miters | Miter saw | Designed to lower the blade onto material for straight or angled cuts. |
For circular-saw work, distinguish a rip cut, which runs with the grain, from a crosscut, which runs across it. Use a blade appropriate to the saw, material, and cut. Confirm that the saw’s cutting depth covers the stock, and support the work so it remains controlled through the cut.
What should I look for in an electric saw for crafts?
Start with the project rather than a product category or catalog. Bosch’s US saws catalog lists multiple saw types and corded and cordless formats, with wood among its application filters; that range is a reason to compare task fit, not evidence that one saw is best for every craft.

- Guides and support: Plan how the workpiece will be supported and, for straight cuts, guided throughout the cut.
- Control and handling: Compare speed control, weight, and vibration for the work you expect to do.
- Guarding and dust: Keep guards in place and consider dust extraction only where the saw supports a compatible setup.
How to use electric saws more safely
Power saws can cause serious injury. OSHA’s guidance is written for US workplace safety; home users should also follow the saw’s manual and applicable local requirements. Never remove a guard or place your hands near a moving blade.
Before cutting
- Use a sharp blade suited to the saw and material, and check that it is installed and fitted correctly.
- Wear eye and face protection, as OSHA recommends for handheld saw work.
- Support and secure the workpiece so it cannot shift unexpectedly; plan the cut and keep hands out of the blade’s path.
For handheld jigsaws and circular saws
OSHA calls for guards on circular saws and jigsaws. Keep the guard in place, use the correct blade, and maintain control of both the saw and the workpiece. Do not force a blade through a cut or use your hands to steady stock near the cutting line.

For table saws
Table saws present kickback and hand-to-blade-contact hazards. OSHA recommends guarding the saw, keeping hands out of the cut line, and using a push stick for small pieces. Use a table saw only with a safe, suitable setup and stock support. ISO 19085-9:2024 addresses safety requirements for circular saw benches; its page notes that a draft replacement is under development, so it should not be read as a substitute for the saw’s current instructions or applicable rules.
For band saws
Guard the blade except at the operating point, adjust the guide close to the stock, and select a blade that suits the curve. Use an appropriate fixture or method to control small workpieces without bringing fingers close to the blade.
