Conventional warm-air dryers generally take 20–30 seconds, while high-speed warm-air and ambient-air models typically take 10–15 seconds, according to the UK Energy Technology List (ETL). Those are category ranges, not guarantees for every installation.
This guide explains the main dryer types, how to compare published specifications fairly, and what commercial buyers and bathroom specifiers should verify before ordering. The products discussed are predominantly commercial, wall-mounted units; household users must check voltage, circuit requirements, dimensions and installation instructions.

What are the main types of electric hand dryers?
Conventional warm-air dryers
These use a broad stream of heated air to evaporate water. ETL guidance places typical drying time at 20–30 seconds. They can be suitable where noise and purchase cost matter more than rapid turnover, but the longer cycle may create queues in busy washrooms.

High-speed warm-air dryers
These force heated air through a narrower outlet at high velocity—typically about 50–80 m/s. ETL describes typical drying times of 10–15 seconds. Heating can improve comfort, while the motor and heater may increase sound or electrical demand.

High-speed ambient-air dryers
Ambient-air models use high-speed air without a heater and also typically dry in 10–15 seconds. They can reduce heating energy, although the air may feel cooler and the sound profile depends on the motor and outlet design.
For ETL-listed high-speed products, eligibility requires less than 5.5 kWh per 1,000 standard drying cycles and a standard-mode drying-time criterion of 15 seconds or less, with the programme’s stated tolerance. ETL says listed products can use up to 70% less energy than standard warm-air dryers. These are programme criteria and statements, not a universal promise for every model or site. Its illustrative example of £108, 972 kWh and 0.3 tonnes of CO₂ annual savings is a hypothetical comparison, not a forecast for your building.
Why advertised drying times are difficult to compare
A number such as “10 seconds” is meaningful only when you know the operating mode, test method and definition of dry. Mitsubishi’s Jet Towel Slim, for example, reports 9–11 seconds in High mode with the heater on and defines its in-house endpoint as 50 mg or less of residual water per hand. Dyson describes a different method based on NSF P335 and 0.1 g residual moisture. These endpoints and procedures are not interchangeable.

Ask each supplier for:
- the exact mode and heater setting used;
- the measured residual-water endpoint;
- whether the figure is a laboratory result, an in-house test or a programme qualification;
- the hand position, number of passes and sensor behaviour; and
- whether the result is typical, maximum or a marketing claim.
Noise, power and water management
Noise figures require the measurement distance and environment. Mitsubishi reports 56 dB for the Jet Towel Slim in Standard mode, measured at two metres in an anechoic chamber. Airdri reports 67 dBA at one metre for ComfortDRI. Because distance, weighting and room acoustics differ, these figures cannot identify a winner without aligned test conditions.
Power ratings also need context: a heated cycle may draw substantially more than an unheated one. Water containment affects cleaning frequency and wall protection. Mitsubishi lists a 0.8-litre drain tank, allowing collected water to be managed at the unit rather than left on the floor or wall.

Confirm the exact regional model and configuration before ordering. The Mitsubishi and Airdri supply figures illustrate why a unit that appears attractive on performance may still be unsuitable for a site’s electrical system.
How to choose a dryer for your bathroom
1. Start with operating conditions
- Traffic: Estimate peak users and queue tolerance. Short cycles matter most in transport hubs, schools, stadiums and busy offices.
- Acoustics: Toilets near offices, wards or restaurants may favour lower measured noise or a quieter operating mode.
- Wall space: Check projection, backing structure, recess options and clearance around the sensor and outlet.
- Electrical supply: Match voltage, current, heater settings and circuit capacity to the building.
- Maintenance: Plan access for filters, sensor cleaning, drain tanks and replacement parts.
2. Compare like with like
Build a schedule that records dry-time endpoint, mode, noise distance and test environment, rated power, energy per cycle when available, dimensions, projection, materials, water handling, warranty and accessibility documentation. Mark values as “not stated” rather than filling gaps with assumptions.
3. Check serviceability and total ownership
A fast dryer that is difficult to clean or access can create more downtime than a slower, simpler unit. Confirm who empties a drain tank, how often filters are replaced, whether the supplier stocks parts locally and what the warranty excludes.

Accessibility and installation requirements
Accessibility is an installation outcome, not merely a badge on a product page. Sloan says Optima Air’s slimmer profile meets ADA compliance standards and describes an XLERATOR recess kit intended to achieve the ADA four-inch protrusion requirement. American Specialties calls Turbo Swift ADA compliant, and Airdri states that ComfortDRI is compliant as a surface-mounted unit. These are manufacturers’ statements.
Before approval, verify the exact model, recess kit or accessories, mounting height, projection, user approach, clear floor space, sensor reach and the accessibility rules that govern the project. Also check wall construction, moisture exposure, cable routing, isolators, circuit protection and maintenance access. The cited product information does not establish one universal residential wiring method; follow the model installation manual and use a qualified installer where required.
What can be concluded about hygiene?
Touchless activation, filters and high-velocity air should be treated as design features, not automatic proof that one dryer is categorically safer. Hygiene depends on hand-washing behaviour, airflow design, cleaning, room ventilation and the evidence behind a specific claim.

Dyson’s commercial hygiene page discusses a peer-reviewed paper based on further analysis reporting that jet hand dryers did not significantly increase aerosols or airborne bacteria compared with walking and washing hands or drying with paper towels. This is a manufacturer’s presentation of research concerning its products; the conclusion should not be extended to every dryer design. Request the underlying study, test conditions and applicability to the model being specified.
A practical specification checklist
- Record expected peak users and acceptable queue time.
- Select conventional heated, high-speed heated or high-speed ambient operation.
- Require a drying-time endpoint and test method, not just a headline seconds figure.
- Normalize noise measurements to the same distance and acoustic conditions.
- Check voltage, current, heater settings and circuit capacity.
- Confirm dimensions, projection, mounting substrate and service clearances.
- Specify water containment or drainage and the cleaning schedule.
- Obtain current accessibility documentation for the installed configuration.
- Compare warranty length, exclusions, parts availability and service response.
- Have the final installation reviewed against local electrical, building and accessibility requirements.
The Bottom Line
For most busy commercial bathrooms, a high-speed dryer is the sensible starting point, but the “best” choice is the model whose tested endpoint, noise, power, water management, accessibility configuration and service plan fit the building. Treat manufacturer figures as configuration-specific evidence, align test conditions before comparing them, and verify installation requirements locally.
