Best Eco-Friendly Dishwasher Detergent: How to Choose a Greener Clean

The best eco-friendly dishwasher detergent is not established by a head-to-head test. Use EPA Safer Choice, ingredient disclosure, and your machine’s needs to compare options.

If you mean detergent for an automatic dishwasher, look for checkable ingredient and certification information—not just a “natural” label. EPA Safer Choice is a useful screen: the program evaluates ingredients for human-health and environmental criteria, and certified products must meet performance requirements. There is no independent head-to-head cleaning test in the available evidence to identify one universal best detergent.

First, choose detergent made for an automatic dishwasher

“Dishwasher soap” usually means machine detergent in this context. It is not the same as hand dishwashing liquid: use a product labeled for automatic dishwashers and follow its directions. Hand dish soap can create excessive suds in a machine.

What makes an automatic dishwasher detergent a greener choice?

Check recognized criteria and ingredient disclosure

EPA Safer Choice is a verifiable starting point, not a vague “green” adjective. EPA reviews ingredients within functional classes, including surfactants, solvents, and chelating agents, against human-health and environmental criteria. The program also requires performance and packaging-related standards, and labeled products must disclose ingredients. Check the current product listing and package rather than relying on an old label or retailer description. See the EPA Safer Choice Standard and Criteria and the EPA Safer Choice FAQ.

Treat “phosphate-free” as one attribute

EPA says Safer Choice-certified products are free of inorganic phosphate builders. Excess phosphate can contribute to algae blooms and oxygen loss in waterways. That makes the claim relevant, but phosphate-free alone is not a full environmental life-cycle assessment and does not establish that a detergent is the best overall choice.

Look past “natural” and be precise about biobased claims

“Natural” by itself does not prove that a product is safer or environmentally preferable; EPA says potential effects depend on the actual ingredients. Ingredient disclosure and recognized criteria are more useful checks. “Plant-based” and “biobased” should likewise be treated as specific product claims, not as a substitute for evaluating the formula or cleaning performance.

Product examples—and what their claims establish

Seventh Generation Free & Clear Dishwasher Detergent Gel

Seventh Generation describes this as a gel for automatic dishwashers that is EPA Safer Choice certified, phosphate-free, enzyme-based, septic safe, and 65% USDA Certified Biobased Products. Those are manufacturer-reported attributes, not independent performance findings; check the current package and formula. The manufacturer directs users to the machine dispenser and recommends rinse aid for very hard water. Details are on the Seventh Generation product page.

USDA BioPreferred catalog listings

The USDA BioPreferred dishwashing-products catalog includes Nature Clean Dishwasher Pacs and ECOS Pro Wave Commercial Automatic Dishwasher Detergent. The latter is described as commercial, so do not assume it is intended for household machines. A catalog listing does not by itself establish current consumer availability, EPA Safer Choice certification, or suitability for a particular dishwasher. Browse the USDA BioPreferred dishwashing-products catalog.

How to compare options for your household

Use these checks when comparing a gel, pack, or another automatic dishwasher detergent:

  • Certification: Verify that the exact product is currently represented as Safer Choice-certified; do not infer certification from a brand name or from a different item in its range.
  • Ingredients: Look for product-level ingredient disclosure and assess the actual information rather than relying on broad words such as “natural.”
  • Format and packaging: Choose a format your household can use as directed, and inspect its packaging. The available product examples include gel and packs, but there is no comparative evidence here that one format cleans better or has a lower overall impact.
  • Machine and water conditions: Follow the product and dishwasher instructions. Water hardness can affect results; Seventh Generation specifically recommends rinse aid for very hard water for its gel.
  • Performance evidence: Look for credible comparative testing before accepting claims that one detergent cleans best. The cited product pages provide manufacturer descriptions, not independent head-to-head results.
