For a tiled shower, use a backer material permitted by your locally adopted building code and follow the exact product instructions. Ordinary drywall—and moisture-resistant drywall—should not be treated as a waterproof shower substrate. The 2024 International Residential Code (IRC) lists several backer categories for shower walls, including fiber-cement board and other cementitious backer units.
Is drywall suitable for a shower?
Usually, “drywall” is not the right way to think about the wall beneath shower tile. Water-resistant gypsum backing board is not waterproofing: the 2024 IRC says it must not be used where directly exposed to water or in areas subject to continuous high humidity. It also prohibits installing that board over a Class I or II vapor retarder in a shower or tub compartment. See 2024 IRC Sections R702.3.7.1 and R702.4.2.
For tile or panels in a shower, select a listed backer that is suitable for the intended assembly. The code’s material list does not, by itself, specify a complete waterproofing system or make every product compatible with every membrane.
Backer materials listed by the 2024 IRC
Section R702.4.2 directs that backers for wall tile in tub and shower areas and wall panels in shower areas come from the categories in Table R702.4.2, and that they be installed according to manufacturer recommendations.

| Backer category | Referenced standard | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Glass-mat gypsum backing panel | ASTM C1178 | Confirm that the exact product and its instructions allow the intended shower use and specify the required water-management details. |
| Fiber-reinforced gypsum panels | ASTM C1278 | Check product instructions and locally applicable code; the category alone does not establish compatibility with a particular shower system. |
| Nonasbestos fiber-cement backer board | ASTM C1288 or ISO 8336 Category C | A cement-based backer category explicitly included by the code for shower backers. Follow the selected board and waterproofing-system instructions. |
| Nonasbestos fiber-mat-reinforced cementitious backer units | ASTM C1325 | A listed cementitious alternative; verify the exact product’s permitted uses and installation requirements. |
These are code-listed categories, not a ranking of cost, ease of handling, or overall quality. Product requirements can differ within a category.
What should you choose?
If you are shopping for a cement-based option, look for “fiber-cement backer board,” “cement board for shower walls,” or “cementitious tile backer.” Those terms describe categories named in the IRC table; they do not guarantee that a particular board works with any waterproofing method.

How to verify the right product and code
- Check your local requirements. The 2024 IRC is a model code, not proof that your jurisdiction has adopted it unchanged. Ask your local building department which code edition and amendments apply.
- Read the board’s installation instructions. Confirm that the exact product is approved for the intended shower use and note its required installation method.
- Check the waterproofing system instructions. Verify that the membrane and its components are approved for the selected backer and follow the specified assembly details.
- Resolve conflicts before installation. If the local code, board instructions, and waterproofing instructions appear inconsistent, ask the manufacturer or building official for clarification rather than improvising.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming moisture-resistant means waterproof. The IRC expressly restricts water-resistant gypsum backing board in direct-water and continuous-high-humidity areas.
- Assuming cement board alone waterproofs the shower. The cited code table identifies backer categories; it does not establish the complete water-management assembly.
- Assuming all backer boards install alike. Use the instructions for the specific product and compatible waterproofing system.
- Assuming the model code is your local code. Adoption and amendments vary by jurisdiction.
