Before choosing a model, confirm its dimensions, clearances, delivery path, outlet, drainage, and building requirements.
Why a ventless heat-pump dryer is often a good apartment fit
A conventional vented dryer sends warm, humid air through ductwork to the exterior. A ventless heat-pump dryer recirculates air and condenses moisture, so it does not need a conventional exterior dryer vent. ENERGY STAR says this makes heat-pump dryers suitable for small spaces and locations without existing vent access. ENERGY STAR’s heat-pump dryer guidance also notes that these models need electricity and a water source.
Condensed water has to go somewhere. Depending on the model and installation, it may drain through a hose or collect in a tank that you empty. Check the specific installation instructions to find out which arrangements are supported and whether the chosen location has an appropriate drain.
What to verify before buying
Measure the full route and installation space
Width alone does not establish fit. Measure the hallway, stairs, doorway, and turns along the delivery route, then compare the space at the installation location with the exact model’s installation manual. Include depth, height, the door’s swing and open depth, and required clearances. For reference, Midea lists its MLHE27H7BWW and MLHE27H7BCG at 23.4 x 25.2 x 33.3 inches; those are model specifications, not a guarantee that the dryer fits a particular alcove or delivery route. Midea’s product specifications provide the listed dimensions.

Confirm voltage and circuit requirements
Do not assume that all compact dryers use the same outlet or circuit. The cited Midea models are specified as 240V. Confirm the requirements for the exact SKU against the product documentation and the apartment’s electrical supply before purchase; arrange installation that complies with the manufacturer’s instructions and local requirements.
Plan for water, stacking, and building rules
- Check whether the dryer supports direct drainage, tank collection, or both, and whether your intended setup is permitted by its manual.
- If you want to stack the dryer, confirm that the washer-dryer pair is explicitly compatible and whether a separate stacking kit is required. Midea’s specification sheet identifies stackability for its cited dryer and matching washer, but check current kit details before ordering.
- Ask the landlord or building manager about appliance approval, electrical work, drainage, and any installation restrictions. The model specifications do not establish what a particular lease or building allows.

What energy efficiency does—and does not—tell you
ENERGY STAR says certified heat-pump dryers use around 70% less energy than conventional clothes dryers. This is a category-level statement, not a promise that your utility bill will fall by that amount. Household savings depend on how often you dry clothes and your electricity rates. ENERGY STAR’s guidance explains the efficiency claim, while its product finder provides model-level information to compare.
When comparing ownership cost, consider purchase and installation costs separately from energy use over time. ENERGY STAR publishes product-level energy metrics that can help with the operating-cost comparison; estimates depend on the assumptions used and are not a household bill forecast.

A practical selection sequence
- Establish whether venting is possible. If the building has no approved exterior dryer vent, focus on ventless models rather than assuming ductwork can be added.
- Confirm the installation location. Check the exact model’s dimensions and clearances, then measure the room, door opening, and delivery route.
- Match utilities and water handling. Verify voltage and circuit requirements, then determine whether the dryer will drain condensate or use a collection tank.
