For occasional pin and handle holes in a small shop, a suitable benchtop press may be enough; larger blanks, deeper work or frequent steel drilling can make a heavier floor model worth considering. Choose by the work you actually do—especially low-speed capability, secure workholding, quill travel and the space available—rather than by a generic ranking.
What size drill press works for knife making?
Start with the size of the blanks and the materials you drill. A press needs enough room to position the work beneath the spindle and enough clearance between the spindle and table or base for the stock. A compact benchtop machine takes less shop space; a floor model can offer a larger work envelope and more table travel. These are format-level trade-offs, not guarantees about any particular model. Compare dimensions in the manufacturer’s current documentation before buying.
A drill press can help make repeatable holes in knife blanks and handle materials, including pin holes. The available sources do not establish that every knife-making workflow requires one.
Which features matter most?
Minimum speed and speed range
Steel, bit diameter and the operation affect the appropriate drilling speed. Compare the press’s actual lowest spindle setting with the work you expect to do; do not treat speed examples from a general metalworking guide as a universal recipe. The comparison at [c002] discusses low-speed capability, but its model figures are secondary-source claims and should be checked against the manufacturer’s documentation.
#1 Best Overall
- Features a 6.2-amp induction motor, a 12-inch swing, and a 3-1/8-inch spindle travel
- Adjust the mechanical variable speed anywhere from 580 to 3100 RPM
- Digital speed readout displays current RPM of the machine for maximum precision
- Measures in at 16.8 by 13.5 by 36.6 inches in size with a weight of 85 pounds
- Includes a class IIIA 2.5mW laser, overhead light, adjustable depth stop, table roller extension, beveling 9-1/2 by 9-1/2-inch work table, 5/8-inch capacity keyed chuck, a chuck key with onboard storage, and a two-year warranty
Workholding and table rigidity
Keep the blank controlled as the bit cuts. Use a suitable vise or clamps to secure work that could catch, and check that the table and workholding arrangement support the blank without unwanted movement. Follow the selected machine’s manual for setup and operation.
Quill travel and chuck capacity
Quill travel affects how far the spindle can descend before you need to reposition the table or work. More travel can be useful with thicker stock. Chuck capacity determines which bit shank sizes can be held directly. Confirm both values for the exact press model in its current specifications.
Rank #2
- Features a 2.3A induction motor, an 8-inch swing, and a 2-inch spindle travel
- Includes a 1/2-inch keyed chuck and onboard key storage
- Operates at 5 different speeds: 750, 1100, 1500, 2100, or 3200 RPM
- 6.5 by 6.5 inch height adjustable worktable bevels up to 45 degrees in each direction
- Measures in at 23 inches tall with a 7 by 11-inch base
Work envelope, precision and shop fit
Check that the blank fits beneath the spindle and can be positioned where the hole is needed. If hole repeatability matters, published spindle runout can be a useful comparison point—but only when the manufacturer confirms the figure and its measurement conditions. Also account for footprint, machine mass, budget and how often you expect to use the press. Prices and availability change, so verify them with the maker or an authorized retailer.
Models to investigate by workload
The following are research leads, not tested recommendations or a ranked list. A secondary metalworking comparison describes these options, but its model specifications should be verified with the relevant manufacturer before purchase.
Rank #3

| Model | Why it may merit a look | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| WEN 4214 | The comparison presents it as a compact benchtop option for occasional metal drilling. | Exact model/version, speed range, quill travel, rigidity and current specifications with WEN. |
| RIKON 30-140 | The comparison presents it as a larger benchtop alternative with a lower minimum speed than its WEN entry. | Minimum speed, working envelope and all current model details with RIKON. |
| JET JDP-17MF | The comparison presents it as a floor option with a larger work envelope and more quill travel than its benchtop candidates. | Dimensions, quill travel, specifications, current availability and space requirements with JET. |
| Powermatic PM2800B | The comparison describes it as a precision-oriented floor option and mentions a micrometer depth stop. | Current specifications with Powermatic; do not rely on the comparison’s runout figure unless Powermatic confirms it. |
| SKIL 10-inch five-speed and WEN 4208T | A knife-making roundup names these as compact candidates. | Exact model numbers and specifications with SKIL or WEN; the roundup contains apparent specification inconsistencies. |
The knife-making roundup at [c001] is directly relevant to the application, but its apparent inconsistencies make it a discovery source rather than a final specification authority. The metalworking comparison at [c002] provides a selection framework and candidate comparisons, not independent testing.
How to choose for your shop
- List the work. Note the materials, blank dimensions, hole sizes and how often you drill.
- Check the operating range. Compare the machine’s lowest speed and chuck capacity with your intended bits and work; confirm the figures in the current manufacturer documentation.
- Check clearance and travel. Make sure your largest blank fits under the spindle and that the quill travel and table adjustment suit the stock.
- Plan workholding. Allow room for a vise or clamps that can secure the blank in the intended position.
- Confirm the purchase details. Verify the exact model, current specifications, warranty, availability and price with the manufacturer or an authorized retailer.
Safe use for knife blanks
Secure the workpiece with suitable workholding, use protective equipment appropriate to the material and operation, and follow the press manufacturer’s manual. Do not use a drill press as a milling machine. The available sources do not establish that grinding or polishing adaptations are safe for the named machines, so do not assume that attachments mentioned in a buying roundup are approved for those uses.
