Why a washer that will not drain may not need a drain cleaner
Water left in the drum can result from a kinked, compressed, damaged, or obstructed hose; incorrect hose installation; a blocked pump filter; debris; or excessive suds. These are not interchangeable. Check the washer and hose first
- Inspect the drain hose. Look for kinks, compression, damage, or visible blockage. Check that it is installed as directed in the manual for your washer; do not assume another brand’s hose height or insertion requirements apply. - Check for washer-side blockages or maintenance needs. A blocked pump filter can prevent draining, but not every washer has an accessible filter. Samsung says its pump-filter cleaning guidance applies to applicable front-loaders, not top-loaders; follow the instructions for your model at Samsung washer drain troubleshooting.
- Consider detergent and suds. Use the detergent type and amount specified for the washer. Whirlpool’s guidance on drainage concerns is at Whirlpool washer troubleshooting.
Test whether the household drain is the problem
LG describes a way to help isolate a suspected standpipe clog: disconnect the washer’s drain hose from the household drain and run a Spin cycle so the washer discharges through the hose. Only perform this check if your model’s instructions and setup permit it. Secure the hose over an appropriate drain or container, anticipate splashing, and take care around standing or hot water; LG warns that residual water may be hot. If the washer still does not discharge properly through its hose, investigate the hose, filter, or washer according to the manual rather than buying a plumbing tool.

- Access route: Check whether the tool can reach the drain through the available access point and whether its instructions permit that use.

- Operating method and safety: Follow the tool maker’s instructions. If access is difficult, the clog persists, or you are unsure about the piping, use a plumber rather than forcing a tool.

Washer-cleaner tablets are for maintenance, not drain clearing
Maytag describes Affresh Washing Machine Cleaner Tablets, product W10501250, as a cleaner for washer components that helps remove odor-causing residues and grime. Its product page recommends use monthly or every 30 cycles: Maytag’s Affresh product page. That schedule and product description concern washer maintenance, not clearing a standpipe. The page showed the product temporarily out of stock when accessed, so availability may change.
The same page calls Affresh the “#1 selling washing machine cleaner,” attributing the claim to Whirlpool Corporation’s U.S. syndicated database for the Washing Machine Cleaner category for the 52 weeks ending March 22, 2025. This is a manufacturer-reported market claim, not independent testing or evidence of drain-clearing performance. The page also identifies the recommending brands and Affresh products as owned and distributed by Whirlpool Corporation.

Use appliance-maker guidance when choosing cleaning or descaling products. Bosch cautions against using common household products such as vinegar or citric acid to descale its washing machines because they may degrade rubber parts, and recommends its tested descaler instead: Bosch washer cleaning and maintenance guidance. That advice is specific to Bosch machines; check your own model’s instructions.

When to call a plumber or appliance technician
- Call a plumber if the washer discharges through its hose during the isolation check but the standpipe still backs up, or if a suspected household-pipe clog cannot be cleared safely.
- Contact the appliance maker or a qualified technician if the washer cannot discharge through its hose, a filter or pump appears blocked, or the model’s instructions do not cover the issue.
- Stop and seek help if water is leaking, the hose or drain connection is damaged, or you cannot safely contain water during diagnosis.
