If your dishwasher leaves plastic containers wet, choose by the exact drying system and its evidence on plastics—not by brand name alone. Bosch CrystalDry has the strongest plastic-specific comparison in the sources available here; heated drying, fan-assisted drying, and automatic door opening are other options, but they have not been shown to perform equally in a head-to-head test.
What makes a dishwasher dry dishes well?
Dishwashers use different approaches to remove moisture. Some use minerals to capture moisture and generate heat; others add heated or fan-assisted drying, rely on residual heat and condensation, or open the door to let humid air escape. The feature name alone does not establish how dry a particular load will be.
Plastic needs a separate check
Plastic often retains water when glass and ceramics are dry. Consumer Reports says its drying assessment checks how thoroughly plastic cups dry, describing them as the most stubborn item in a load (Consumer Reports Buying Guide 2026). Yale Appliance’s 2026 account says Bosch CrystalDry led its test on plastics, while Miele AutoOpen/CleanAir performed closely and well on glass and ceramics (Yale Appliance). Yale is a retailer, and this is its comparative account—not a universal independent ranking of every dishwasher.
Dishwashers to consider for drying
These candidates represent different drying approaches. The cited sources do not provide a single current, independent head-to-head score across all of them.

How the drying systems differ
Mineral-assisted heat: Bosch CrystalDry
Bosch says CrystalDry uses natural minerals to collect moisture and transform it into heat, then circulates hot air through the tub. Bosch gives a maximum of up to 176°F for the heat generated by this process. The company’s “60% better drying” figure is its aggregate average comparison of CrystalDry with Bosch PureDry on a mixed household load including plastics, glass, steel, and porcelain; Bosch says results may vary by dish type. Heated and fan-assisted drying
Heated drying adds heat to help evaporate moisture. Whirlpool WDP540HAMZ is listed with Heated Dry and Extended Dry by Tom’s Guide. Maytag describes PowerDry on select models as heated drying combined with a fan. These are model-specific features, not a guarantee that all products from either brand use the same system.

Automatic door opening
Smart AutoRelease on the Samsung DW80B7070US and the Fisher & Paykel DW24UT4I2’s automatic door opening use the end of the cycle to release humid air. Fisher & Paykel also lists fan-assisted drying and Dry+ for plastics. The cited product descriptions establish which features are offered, but not comparable test results. Before choosing this approach, confirm whether the door-opening function can be disabled if your kitchen layout or routine makes it inconvenient.
How to choose the right model
- Decide what needs to come out dry. If plastic containers are the main frustration, give plastic-specific test evidence more weight than general claims about drying. For mostly plates and glassware, also weigh quietness, racks, efficiency, and price.
- Confirm the exact model and drying feature. Match the complete SKU to the manufacturer’s current product page. Tom’s Guide lists Bosch 500 Series SHP65CM5N with CrystalDry as its Bosch pick, while Bosch’s official result identifies 800 Series SHP78CM5N with CrystalDry. - Compare energy use and capacity. ENERGY STAR recommends using the EnergyGuide label to compare energy consumption and estimated annual operating costs among similar models, choosing an appropriate capacity, and considering cycle choices. Check the exact SKU in ENERGY STAR’s certified product lookup before treating it as certified. The program says a standard-size certified dishwasher costs about $50 per year to run and can save about 5,800 gallons of water over its lifetime; these are program-level estimates, not model-specific guarantees. - Check fit and installation details. Confirm the dishwasher’s dimensions and installation requirements against your opening and plumbing before ordering, especially for an integrated model such as the Fisher & Paykel DW24UT4I2.
- Compare practical ownership details. Check current price, warranty, local service, noise, cycle duration, and whether an automatic door-opening feature suits your kitchen. Listings and availability can vary by market and change over time.
What the comparisons can—and cannot—tell you
The available evidence supports comparing particular features and plastic-drying observations, not naming a proven universal winner. Bosch’s 60% figure is a manufacturer comparison against its own PureDry system, while Yale’s plastic result is a retailer’s test account. Product-page descriptions from Samsung, Maytag, and Fisher & Paykel establish feature availability, not equal performance under controlled head-to-head conditions. Confirm current specifications for the exact SKU before buying.
