For most households, a quality automatic-dishwasher tablet or pack is a convenient starting point; choose powder if adjustable dosing or hard-water guidance matters more. There is no format that works best in every dishwasher and water supply. Use detergent made for automatic dishwashers—not hand dish soap, which can create excess suds—and follow both the detergent label and your dishwasher manual.
What “dishwasher soap” means
Dishwasher soap usually means detergent formulated for an automatic dishwasher. Ordinary hand-washing dish soap is not a substitute: it can produce excessive suds in a machine and interfere with washing. GE Appliances and Bosch both advise using automatic-dishwasher detergent (GE Appliances; Bosch Home Appliances).
Choose among packs or tablets, powder, and liquid or gel based on your machine’s instructions, the load’s soil, your water hardness, your preferred dosing method, and cost per load. A product’s format alone cannot guarantee spotless dishes.
How the main detergent formats compare
| Format | Cleaning and filming guidance | Dosing and convenience | Hard-water and cycle considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Packs or tablets | Whirlpool says these generally reduce filming better than powder, liquid, or gel; formulas and results vary. | Single-dose and convenient, but not adjustable for load size. | Check the manual and label; an all-in-one product does not necessarily replace dishwasher salt where the appliance requires it. |
| Powder | Whirlpool says it is often a good hard-water option for limescale, streaks, white spots, and cloudiness; Bosch describes it as an effective alternative. | Often budget-friendly, with a dose that can be adjusted to load size. | May dissolve less effectively in cold water. Whirlpool suggests a hotter wash cycle to help it dissolve; follow the appliance and package directions. |
| Liquid or gel | Bosch cautions that liquid detergents may clean less effectively, particularly on bleachable tea or coffee stains. That is a possible tradeoff, not proof that every gel performs poorly. | Easy to pour and allows dose adjustment; use the amount specified on the package. | Check your model’s guidance and the product directions. |
These are manufacturer recommendations, not a universal, independent ranking. Whirlpool’s format guidance is written for household detergent use and may be most directly applicable to its products; Bosch’s guidance is specific to Bosch appliances. Neither makes a particular brand the best choice for every dishwasher.

What to choose for your household
- You want simple, premeasured dosing: Start with a quality automatic-dishwasher tablet or pack. Whirlpool says these generally reduce filming better than other formats, but follow your model’s care guide and the product label.
- You want to control the dose or keep costs down: Consider powder. Bosch says its dose can be adjusted to the load, and both Bosch and Whirlpool describe it as a budget-friendly option.
- Your area has hard water: Powder may be worth trying, since Whirlpool says it is often preferable in hard water. Check the appliance’s guidance on water softening and dishwasher salt before changing products or settings.
- You prefer pourable detergent: Liquid or gel makes dosing flexible, but Bosch notes a potential cleaning drawback for tea and coffee stains.
- You are matching detergent to a particular brand of dishwasher: Start with that model’s manual and care guidance. Manufacturer advice can be model-specific; do not assume a format recommendation for one brand applies to every machine.
How to address spots, film, and hard water
White marks or cloudy glassware can be related to hard-water deposits, detergent, or rinse and drying conditions. Determine your water hardness before treating every spot as a detergent problem. Whirlpool describes water at 15 grains per U.S. gallon or more as extremely hard and recommends a water softener at that level; this is Whirlpool’s appliance guidance, not a population statistic (Whirlpool Product Help).
Rinse aid for drying and deposits
Rinse aid can improve drying and help reduce film or hard-water deposits, according to GE Appliances and Whirlpool. Check whether your detergent pack actually includes rinse aid—formulas differ—and consult the dishwasher manual for the rinse-aid dispenser and settings. Adding rinse aid is most relevant when dishes are not drying well or spots persist.

Salt and softening guidance
Some dishwashers use dishwasher salt as part of their water-softening system. Bosch says salt may be needed in hard-water areas even when using an all-in-one tablet; whether it is needed depends on the water hardness and dishwasher model. Check the manual rather than assuming that a tablet eliminates the need for salt or that every machine uses it.
When deposits persist
If film continues, verify the detergent dose and cycle instructions, check water hardness, and follow the manufacturer’s advice for the machine’s softener and cleaning. Whirlpool’s glassware guidance discusses hard-water deposits and dishwasher care; use the steps that apply to your model rather than treating a detergent change as the only remedy.

Use and store detergent correctly
- Read the dishwasher manual and detergent label. Confirm the suitable detergent type, dose, compartment, cycle, and any model-specific salt or rinse-aid requirements.
- Load the detergent as directed. Bosch says a tablet belongs in the designated detergent compartment so it releases at the intended point in the cycle.
- Use the package dose. With powder or gel, adjust only as the product and machine directions allow; more detergent is not automatically better.
- Keep detergent dry and fresh. GE and Whirlpool advise storing it away from moisture in a closed container. Discard old or lumpy powder, which may not clean effectively.
Bottom line by need
- Convenience: Choose a quality automatic-dishwasher pack or tablet and verify its instructions for your machine.
- Dose flexibility or budget: Compare powder by cost per load and use the label’s dosing guidance.
- Hard-water concerns: Check water hardness and the manual’s softener and salt instructions; powder may be a useful option, but it is not a universal fix.
- Poor drying or spots: Check rinse-aid guidance and water conditions before switching detergent formats.
