Soft water generally needs less detergent than hard water. Confirm your water hardness, follow your dishwasher and detergent instructions, and avoid adding extra detergent: too much can permanently etch glassware and make it look cloudy.
How to choose dishwasher detergent for soft water
Choose a product labeled for automatic dishwashers and compatible with your machine. Do not use hand-dishwashing liquid or other household soap in the dispenser: it can create excessive suds and interfere with cleaning. GE Appliances names Cascade Platinum ActionPacs and Finish Quantum as examples of automatic-dishwasher detergents, but its guidance does not establish either as a top-performing choice for soft water. Format affects how much control you have over the dose. Powder and liquid can be measured according to your manual; tablets and packs are pre-measured. Whirlpool says quality tablets and packs are suitable across water-hardness levels, but follow the product and appliance instructions rather than opening or dividing a pack. Confirm your water hardness before changing the dose
Do not assume that water is soft based on how it feels or how dishes look. Frigidaire recommends contacting your water supplier or getting a water test. GE Appliances also suggests checking with the utility or county extension agent. Once you know the hardness, use your dishwasher manual’s directions; dosage advice varies by model and detergent format.

GE’s example for powder or liquid detergent
GE Appliances gives this general dispenser-fill guide by hardness. It is an example for powder or liquid detergent, not a universal recipe, and it does not set a dose for tablets or packs. Your own dishwasher manual takes precedence. GE Appliances’ detergent and water-hardness guide

Soft water calls for less detergent because an excess can etch glassware, according to GE Appliances. Keep detergent fresh and store it as the product label directs; Frigidaire notes that freshness and storage matter to detergent use.

Recognize when detergent may be causing cloudy glass
Cloudiness alone does not identify the cause. In soft water, excess detergent can etch glass. Etching may resemble a film, but Electrolux says it cannot be wiped away. Too little detergent can also contribute to poor cleaning, while hard-water residue can leave filming or spots. Adjust rinse aid for drying and spots
Rinse aid can improve drying and reduce water spots, but its setting depends on the dishwasher. GE Appliances names Cascade Platinum Power Dry and Finish Jet-Dry as examples of rinse aids, not as independently tested recommendations. If you see a sticky white or blue film, streaks, or foam, consult your manual about reducing the setting. A Gorenje manual gives that advice for its dishwasher and notes that a 50:50 rinse-aid dilution may work with very soft water; those directions are specific to that manual and should not be applied to other models without checking their instructions. Samsung says its dishwasher pods need a water supply temperature of at least 120°F to dissolve completely. This is Samsung’s guidance, not a universal setting for every dishwasher or detergent. Is there a single best brand for soft water?
The manufacturer guidance available here does not provide a controlled head-to-head test establishing one detergent brand as best for soft water. Choose by compatibility with your machine, whether the format lets you follow the recommended dose, and whether your dishes need rinse aid for drying or spotting. A brand example or general manufacturer recommendation is not a comparative performance result.
