Fill Dirt

Best Dirt to Fill Holes in Your Yard: Topsoil, Fill Dirt, or Compost?

Use screened, soil-matched topsoil for shallow lawn dips. For deeper bare holes, fill with suitable fill dirt and finish with topsoil; check drainage before covering a persistent low spot.

For a shallow dip in healthy lawn, use a thin layer of screened topsoil that matches the soil already there. For a deeper bare hole, use fill dirt for most of the volume and finish with topsoil where grass or plants need to grow. Compost can help when improving soil structure is part of the job; sand is not a universal drainage fix.

Choose dirt based on the hole and what must grow there

Yard condition Suitable material and approach Important qualification
Shallow depression in healthy turf Screened topsoil compatible with the existing soil; blend in compost if improving soil quality is also a goal. Apply lightly so grass remains exposed and can grow through or recover.
Deeper, bare hole Use suitable fill dirt for most of the volume, then topsoil at the surface. Replace removed sod or seed as needed. Depending on the depression, sod may need to be removed before filling and replaced afterward. There is no consistent depth threshold that applies to every yard.
Sandy native soil Sand may be suitable for topdressing; organic matter may help improve water-holding balance. Clemson Extension’s guidance is for South Carolina conditions; local soil and turf matter.
Clay native soil Favor compatible topsoil, with compost if appropriate, rather than adding sand automatically. A Texas expert response cautions that sand can combine with clay into a hard mixture; this is localized advice, not a universal laboratory finding.
Large area or substantial grade correction Plan the fill, growing layer, and finished grade together; bulk delivery may suit a larger volume. Assess slope and water flow before filling if drainage or runoff is significant.

Know what each material is for

Topsoil for the growing surface

Topsoil is the practical choice for a shallow lawn dip and for the final surface of a deeper repair where grass or other plants must grow. For small repairs, look for screened topsoil or a lawn topdressing mix, and check its contents and suitability for your local soil.

Fill dirt for bulk

Fill dirt provides volume beneath the growing layer in a deeper bare hole. It is not a substitute for topsoil at the surface when you intend to establish grass or plants there.

Compost for soil improvement

Compost adds organic matter and may be incorporated when the goal includes improving soil structure or supporting regrowth. It is a soil amendment, not a replacement for the bulk fill needed in a deep void.

Sand only where soil conditions support it

Clemson University Cooperative Extension Home & Garden Information Center states: “Sand should ONLY be used to topdress lawns when the native soil is sandy.” Its factsheet is written for South Carolina conditions and may not apply elsewhere. An Ask Extension response about a clay-soil lawn in Texas also cautions against sand in that context. Check the native soil rather than treating sand as a general-purpose fix for poor drainage.

How to fill a lawn dip or deeper hole

  1. Check why the depression formed. Look for signs of an ongoing leak, animal burrow, or drainage issue. Filling over a continuing cause can leave the problem unresolved.
  2. Choose material for the job. Use compatible topsoil for the growing surface, fill dirt for bulk in a deeper bare hole, and compost only when soil improvement is part of the goal.
  3. For established grass, topdress lightly. Spread no more than about one-half inch at a time, rake the material between grass blades, and avoid burying healthy turf. Clemson Extension recommends light, frequent topdressing; The Home Depot describes a general layer of one-quarter to one-half inch. These are recommendations, not universal guarantees.
  4. For a deeper bare hole, build the fill and restore the surface. Remove turf if needed, add suitable fill dirt, finish with topsoil, and replace sod or seed as appropriate.
  5. Settle and reassess. Water lightly if appropriate, then check for standing water or runoff. If a low spot remains, repeat a light topdressing after the grass has responded rather than burying the lawn in one application.
  6. Work while the grass can recover. Choose a period of active growth and avoid heat-stressed turf. The right timing depends on region and grass type, so a calendar date suitable in one area may be wrong in another.

When filling alone will not solve the problem

A depression that repeatedly collects standing water or sends runoff across the yard may reflect a drainage or grading issue. Address the water flow before adding more soil; otherwise, the repair may simply conceal the low area temporarily. For a larger grade correction, evaluate the slope and drainage as part of the work rather than treating the job as a small lawn topdressing.

What to buy for the repair

For a small lawn dip, screened topsoil or a lawn topdressing mix is usually the most practical purchase. A shovel and landscaping rake help place and spread it; a hand tamper may help compact deeper bare fill. For a large volume, local bulk delivery can be more practical than many bags. Regardless of format, check what the material contains, how well it is screened, and whether it suits the site.
