There is no established universal brand winner; compatibility, correct dosing, and the washer’s instructions matter most.
First, check whether your top-loader is HE or standard
Look for an HE label or symbol on the washer, and check its manual if you are unsure. An HE top-loader uses less water than a traditional washer, so it needs a low-sudsing detergent labeled HE. Tide explains that non-HE detergent is formulated for “high-water, traditional washers,” while excessive suds in an HE machine can interfere with washing and rinsing or trigger suds errors. ARM & HAMMER likewise cautions against using regular detergent in an HE washer. These are manufacturers’ compatibility instructions, not independent comparative tests. If you have a standard top-loader, use a detergent whose label is suitable for that machine. Do not assume every top-loader requires HE detergent—or that a detergent suitable for one type is right for the other.

How to choose a detergent
Match the label to the washer
For an HE washer, select a product labeled HE. Tide lists its HE Turbo Clean line for machines bearing HE symbols. ARM & HAMMER also offers HE-labeled products. These are examples of compatible product lines, not evidence that one brand cleans better than another. Product formulas and package details can change, so confirm the current label. Choose a format for how you do laundry
- Liquid or powder: These formats allow you to adjust the amount for different load sizes. Liquid can also be convenient for pretreating stains. Persil describes these practical format differences in its liquid detergent guide.
- Pods or laundry pacs: These offer a premeasured option when convenience matters. Tide’s instructions say to put Tide PODS in the empty drum before adding laundry. Follow the specific product’s directions: Tide PODS use instructions.
These are format and convenience differences; the available manufacturer guidance does not establish that pods, liquid, or powder cleans best in every top-loader.
Consider fragrance and sensitivity preferences
Check the current package for fragrance and other formula details, and choose according to your household’s preferences. Detergent formulas and labels can change, so rely on the product you are buying rather than an older description.

How much detergent to use
There is no reliable universal capful or spoonful for every washer and detergent. The correct amount depends on the product formula and the load; use the current package directions for the specific detergent and load size. Do not transfer a dose from one product to another, especially when concentrations differ.
Persil says its package directions account for its products and that load size affects the amount. Its product page gives a typical 6-pound load as a dosing basis, but that figure is specific to Persil guidance and should not be treated as a standard dose for other detergents. Persil’s dosage directions explain its approach; ARM & HAMMER also directs customers to follow the dose on its package.

Where to put detergent in a top-loader
Placement depends on the washer design and detergent directions. Check the appliance manual first, including whether your machine has a dispenser, and follow the product label. Do not assume that one placement method applies to every top-loader.
- Tide says liquid detergent in a top-loader can go into the dispenser drawer, if present, or into the drum after water fills. See Tide’s washing-machine FAQ.
- For regular top-loading machines, Persil advises against pouring detergent directly on top of the laundry. Its guidance is to add some water, then detergent, then laundry so the detergent can dissolve. See Persil’s dosage and directions page.
- For Tide PODS, Tide directs users to place the pac in the empty drum before adding clothes. Follow the directions for the specific pac and washer.
What about specific brands?
