Measured powder can be a practical choice for small loads when the manual allows it; no single brand, pod, or amount is right for every compact machine. Never substitute hand dish soap: GE Appliances warns that it can create suds, impair performance, and leave suds or water on the floor.
What detergent can I use in a countertop dishwasher?
Choose a product labeled for automatic dishwashers, then check your exact model’s manual for approved formats, where detergent goes, and how much to use. Compact machines vary, so instructions for one countertop dishwasher should not be treated as instructions for another.
Powder, automatic-dishwasher gel or liquid, and pods or tablets are all possibilities only when your manual permits that format. Product labels also matter: for example, Cascade says to follow its label for powder or gel amounts, and notes that water hardness can affect dosing.
Which detergent format should you choose?
| Format | When it can make sense | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Powder | A measured portion can suit a small load when the machine allows it. | Follow the manual’s dosing directions and dispenser markings; capacities are model-specific. |
| Automatic-dishwasher gel or liquid | Consider it if the exact manual lists it as supported. | Use the product label’s dose guidance and account for water hardness as directed. |
| Pods or tablets | Convenient when the exact model and cycle support them. | Check whether a full-size dose is suitable and whether the chosen cycle is long enough for the tablet to dissolve. |
One Farberware manual says tablets are for models with a 3-in-1 function or program and recommends long programs so the tablet can dissolve fully. That is specific guidance for the covered models, not a rule for every countertop dishwasher. No independent head-to-head test establishes one detergent brand as best across compact models; brand product claims should not be read as comparative proof.

How much detergent should you put in a mini dishwasher?
A Farberware countertop dishwasher manual says, “Generally, only one tablespoon of detergent is needed for a normal wash load.” Treat that as an example of that manual’s guidance, not a universal countertop dosage. The same guidance says heavily soiled dishes may need more and that soil level and water hardness can affect the amount; consult your own manual’s cycle table and the detergent package.
Use the detergent chamber’s markings and capacities only if they belong to your exact model. Put detergent in just before starting the cycle, and keep it dry until then, as the cited Farberware guidance instructs.

Can you use regular dish soap?
No. Hand dishwashing liquid is not a substitute for automatic dishwasher detergent. It can produce excessive suds and poor washing performance, and GE warns that suds or water may end up on the floor. Use only a detergent intended for automatic dishwashers.
Why is dishwasher detergent not dissolving?
If detergent remains in the dispenser or on dishes, check the likely causes rather than immediately increasing the dose:

- Wet or blocked dispenser: Keep detergent dry and check that the chamber can open and release it.
- Obstructed loading: Make sure dishes or utensils do not block the dispenser or spray arms.
- Water too cool: Low water temperature can contribute to undissolved detergent.
- Old or poorly stored detergent: Follow the package’s storage directions; Cascade recommends storing detergent in a cool, dry place.
- Short cycle with a tablet: Check whether the manual calls for a longer program to give tablets time to dissolve.
Cascade’s use guidance also recommends loading detergent just before the cycle and checking for dispenser and loading obstructions.

Where the dishwasher supports it, rinse aid can improve drying and help prevent film, according to GE Appliances. Check the exact model manual before using it: some countertop units do not support rinse aid. For example, the manual for Comfee’s CDC17P0ABB says that model does not support it; the Comfee product page links to product information and a manual.
