A dehumidifier with a drain hose can send collected water to a floor drain or sump, so you do not have to empty its bucket by hand. The best choice depends first on the space’s size and moisture conditions, then on whether the unit’s drainage setup, efficiency, and operating-temperature range fit the installation.
What a drain hose does—and what it does not do
Continuous drainage is a convenience feature, not a capacity rating. A hose connection lets some portable dehumidifiers drain collected water from the bucket to a suitable outlet. It does not make an undersized unit capable of handling a damp basement, crawlspace, or other space with a high moisture load.
ENERGY STAR’s consumer guidance says portable-dehumidifier capacity is generally measured in pints removed per 24 hours and depends on both the space’s size and its conditions without dehumidification. Its guidance recommends oversizing rather than undersizing when choosing capacity.
How to choose a dehumidifier with continuous drain
1. Match capacity to the space
Start with the area to be dehumidified and how damp it is, rather than selecting by hose connection alone. Compare the capacity stated in pints per 24 hours, and allow for the moisture conditions the unit must address. A model that cannot keep up may run without controlling moisture adequately.

2. Compare efficiency using IEF
Integrated energy factor (IEF) measures liters of water removed per kilowatt-hour consumed; a higher IEF generally indicates a more efficient dehumidifier. ENERGY STAR’s consumer page says a certified dehumidifier uses “20% less energy” than a similarly sized conventional unit while removing the same amount of moisture. That is the organization’s comparison, not a guarantee of a particular household-bill reduction. Check the current certification and product listing rather than relying on an older model page; the consumer page lists the current specification as effective October 1, 2025.
3. Confirm gravity drainage or pump drainage
Many continuous-drain arrangements rely on gravity: the hose runs from a bucket fitting down to a floor drain or sump. This requires the unit to sit high enough and the hose to maintain a suitable downward route. If the drain is higher than the unit or too far away for a practical gravity route, a built-in pump may be relevant—but verify that the exact model has one, along with its pump lift and hose-routing limits, in the manual. Do not assume a generic continuous-drain description means a pump is included.

4. Check the fitting, hose, and drain destination
Manuals determine which fitting a hose uses, what hose size or type is compatible, and how the bucket or drain port must be prepared. Check whether a hose is included or must be purchased separately; that detail is not established across models. Plan a short, stable route to a floor drain or sump where possible. ENERGY STAR advises keeping the hose away from electrical cords and connections, avoiding drainage near electrical circuits or devices, and locating the unit close enough to the drain to avoid a long, unwieldy hose. 5. Check the operating-temperature range
Cold conditions can affect moisture removal. ENERGY STAR warns that frost may form on condenser coils when air temperature falls below 65°F; the resulting compressor cycling may occur without moisture being removed. If the space gets cold, look for model-specific low-temperature operating limits and frost-protection details in the manufacturer’s manual.

The exact setup varies by model, so use the manual for the fitting and routing instructions. In general, continuous drainage works only when the hose is securely attached and water can reach its destination without an unsuitable rise, kink, or unsafe route.
