A dehumidifier can reduce room-side window condensation when indoor humidity is high, but it cannot fix every cause. Condensation forms when the glass is colder than the dew point of the room air; cold glazing, drafts, restricted airflow, and indoor moisture all affect whether it appears. Start by measuring relative humidity (RH), then match a unit’s capacity to the dampness and size of the space—and address moisture or window problems that a dehumidifier cannot correct.
Will a dehumidifier stop window condensation?
It may help if excess indoor moisture is a meaningful contributor. Lowering RH lowers the dew point, making it less likely that room-side glass will be cold enough for water to form. But a dehumidifier cannot warm cold glass, repair a draft, or correct a window installation problem. ENERGY STAR notes that even certified windows can experience condensation in cold weather (ENERGY STAR guidance on residential windows).
Window condensation is therefore a clue, not proof that the home needs a dehumidifier. Measure RH and look for other sources or conditions before choosing equipment.
What humidity should you keep your home at in winter?
ENERGY STAR describes 30%–50% RH as the general optimum range for a building. For heating season in colder climates, it recommends 30%–40% RH to help prevent window condensation. These are guidance ranges, not guarantees for every building, climate, window, or occupant. Do not treat 30%–40% as a universal year-round target (ENERGY STAR dehumidifier guidance).

Measure before adjusting
A hygrometer measures RH. If a dehumidifier lacks a built-in humidistat, or its humidistat does not display RH, ENERGY STAR recommends considering a separate hygrometer. Check the reading in the affected room rather than assuming condensation alone tells you the humidity level.
How to choose a dehumidifier for window condensation
Choose by the size of the area needing treatment and how damp it is—not by the window count alone. ENERGY STAR’s capacity chart provides sizing ranges, not an individualized prescription, and advises that oversizing is preferable to undersizing. Its dampness descriptions include intermittent musty odor, persistent dampness or damp spots, and sweating or seepage (ENERGY STAR capacity guidance).

| Space and dampness | ENERGY STAR recommended capacity range |
|---|---|
| Small-to-medium space under 2,000 square feet; slightly to moderately damp | 20–30 pints per day |
| Small-to-medium space under 2,000 square feet; very damp | 25–40 pints per day |
| Small-to-medium space under 2,000 square feet; wet | 30–50 pints per day |
Use these as official guide ranges, not as a guarantee that a particular unit will resolve condensation. The affected space may be only one room, or it may be a larger area; assess where the moisture problem is occurring and how damp those conditions are.
Compare current capacity ratings carefully
Capacity is expressed in pints of water removed per day under specified test conditions. The U.S. Department of Energy changed dehumidifier test conditions beginning in 2020 to use cooler, more realistic conditions. As a result, comparable modern units can show lower pint-per-day ratings than older products; a lower current rating does not by itself mean the newer unit removes less moisture (ENERGY STAR explanation of dehumidifier testing and capacity).

Check efficiency and current certification
Integrated Energy Factor (IEF), measured in liters per kilowatt-hour (L/kWh), is an efficiency measure; a higher IEF generally indicates greater efficiency. ENERGY STAR Version 6.0 criteria took effect October 1, 2025. The listed portable-dehumidifier thresholds are:
| Rated capacity | Minimum IEF under ENERGY STAR Version 6.0 |
|---|---|
| At or below 25 pints/day | 1.70 L/kWh |
| 25.01–50 pints/day | 2.01 L/kWh |
| At least 50.01 pints/day | 3.30 L/kWh |
These are certification thresholds, not a ranking of models. Before buying, check that the precise product model appears in the current listing and compare its capacity and IEF under the applicable criteria (ENERGY STAR key efficiency criteria).

Check controls, drainage, and placement
- RH display and humidistat: Choose controls that let you monitor and manage humidity; use a separate hygrometer if the unit does not show RH.
- Water handling: Check whether the model collects water in a bucket with automatic shutoff, offers continuous drainage, or both. Confirm the specific model’s options and the practical route for emptying or draining it.
- Airflow: Follow the manufacturer’s placement instructions. If the unit does not discharge air upward, ENERGY STAR advises keeping it away from walls and furniture so air can circulate.
- Space and operation: A dehumidifier works on the space it treats. ENERGY STAR advises closing doors and windows to that space while it runs.
Reduce the moisture causing condensation
Lowering indoor RH is only one lever. ENERGY STAR recommends reducing moisture at its source, which can also reduce the need for dehumidification (ENERGY STAR guidance).
- Vent clothes dryers outdoors.
- Use kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans to send humid air outdoors.
- If basement moisture is involved, consider whether foundation drainage measures are needed.
Also allow air to move over the window glass. Heavy or tightly fitted window treatments can restrict airflow; ENERGY STAR recommends treatments that permit air circulation across the glass. If the condensation coincides with drafts or a cold area around the frame, investigate air leaks and installation. ENERGY STAR recommends sealing leaks around openings and insulating the space between the window frame and rough opening during installation (ENERGY STAR window guidance).

Run and maintain the unit safely
- Close the doors and windows of the space being dehumidified while the unit operates.
- Follow its airflow instructions and keep it clear of walls or furniture as directed.
- Keep it away from dust and dirt that can clog coils and grilles.
- Follow electrical safety instructions, and route any drain hose away from cords and electrical connections.
A dehumidifier may warm the nearby air slightly as it removes moisture. For a general energy comparison, ENERGY STAR says certified units use 13% less energy than similarly sized conventional units; this is ENERGY STAR’s stated comparison, not a guarantee of an individual household’s savings (ENERGY STAR dehumidifier guidance).
