A deep-fill washer is usually a top-load machine with a model-specific option to add more water than its automatic load-sensing wash. It is not a standardized fill level: the controls, eligible cycles and maximum amount vary by model. Maytag’s MVW6200KW and MVW7230HW are manufacturer-listed examples, but the available evidence does not establish a tested “best” overall washer. Compare the exact model’s controls and cycle limits before buying.
What “deep fill” means on a washing machine
Most high-efficiency top-load washers sense the load and use a lower water level during the regular wash. A deep-fill option lets the machine add more water for selected loads. The term is a feature label, not a promise that every garment will be submerged or that machines from different brands use the same amount of water.
Whirlpool says cycle selection affects water level in its top-load HE washers. GE describes Deep Fill as adding water beyond a manual or load-sensing fill. These settings are distinct from a deep rinse: GE explicitly distinguishes the wash-cycle Deep Fill option from Deep Rinse.
How deep-fill controls differ by brand

When to use deep fill—and what to expect
Use the option for loads that warrant additional water rather than making it the default for every wash. GE recommends Deep Fill for special-case loads, while Whirlpool advises choosing a cycle suited to the laundry. A suitable cycle and fill setting depend on the washer’s own instructions.

- Some items can sit above the water line. Whirlpool says its washer is designed to clean using less water and that it is normal for part of a load to remain above the water line, even when using a deeper fill.
- Expect a longer cycle on Whirlpool models when Deep Fill is selected. Its 2025 guide attributes this to the additional fill time; it does not state a specific number of extra minutes.
- Do not assume more water guarantees better cleaning. The manufacturer material here does not establish a comparative cleaning-performance advantage across models.
How to compare deep-fill washers before buying
There is no supported basis for naming one model the best-performing deep-fill washer: the available manufacturer material identifies features, not controlled comparative test results. Instead, compare the exact washer against the needs of your household and the laundry you wash.
- Find the exact model’s manual and controls. Confirm whether deep fill is a button, a selectable level, or a hold-to-activate setting.
- Check cycle eligibility. Identify which wash cycles allow the option and whether an extra rinse is bundled with a maximum-fill choice.
- Clarify what “maximum” means for that model. Some systems offer multiple increments or levels; others describe a maximum-fill request. Do not transfer one brand’s gallon figures to another.
- Compare capacity and dimensions. Confirm the stated capacity and that the washer fits the intended installation space.
- Choose wash action deliberately. Compare agitator and impeller configurations on the exact models you are considering; deep fill alone does not establish which wash action suits your loads.
- Review cycle duration and current certifications. Look at the model’s cycle guide and current water- and energy-certification information rather than inferring efficiency from the deep-fill label.
Manufacturer-listed examples
Maytag MVW6200KW
Maytag lists the MVW6200KW as a 4.8 cu. ft. top-load washer with Deep Fill. The company describes its deeper water levels as working with the washer’s wash action to address everyday tough messes; that is a manufacturer statement, not an independent comparative test result.
