For a classic white perennial, start with Shasta daisy (Leucanthemum × superbum) seeds. For a brighter, shorter-lived display, consider a mixed African daisy packet—but check its botanical name, since “daisy” covers many unrelated plants. Neither option is a proven best performer: the right choice depends on your climate, garden site, and preferred color and height.
Which daisy seeds suit your garden?
Seed listings use “daisy” for different plants, so compare the botanical name, life cycle, and growing requirements—not just the flower name. The Chicago Botanic Garden’s garden profile notes that 22 genera include flowers commonly called daisies and counts 38 species under the common name; those are the profile’s figures, not a comprehensive taxonomic audit.
| Option | Type and appearance | Listed size | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shasta daisy (Leucanthemum × superbum) | Perennial; white flowers | 16–24 inches tall, according to Eden Brothers’ listing | Classic white planting in a sunny, well-drained site; listed for Zones 4–9 |
| ‘Alaska’ Shasta daisy | Named Shasta cultivar; white flowers | 24–36 inches tall with 3–4-inch blooms, according to Germania Seed’s 2026 catalog | A taller white option where local conditions suit Shasta daisies |
| African daisy mix | Annual; yellow, apricot, orange, and white flowers | About one foot tall, with 1.5-inch flowers, according to Eden Brothers | A shorter, color-forward seasonal display; listed for full sun and dry, gritty soil |
| English daisy (Bellis perennis) | Short plant with rose, red, salmon, or white flowers | Short edging plant; Chicago-area profile describes it as biennial there | Consider only with local conditions in mind; flowers may fade in summer heat |

The seller specifies direct sowing in spring or fall at 1/4 inch. It estimates an average 423 seeds per packet and coverage of up to 80 square feet; those are supplier estimates, not guaranteed plant counts or coverage.

For a taller named option, Germania Seed’s 2026 catalog describes ‘Alaska’ as a perennial for Zones 4–9, reaching 24–36 inches with 3–4-inch white blooms. The catalog suggests pairing it with lady’s mantle, salvias, star zinnias, and coreopsis. Its description says Shasta seed needs light to germinate, should be planted in well-drained soil, and blooms from May through September in the year it is sown. Treat that bloom window as a catalog claim, not a promise for every region or seed lot.
Will Shasta daisies flower the first year?
They may: Germania’s catalog says its Shasta seed blooms in the year sown, but that is not a universal guarantee. Timing depends on the seed, sowing date, and local growing conditions. The Ohio State Extension Master Gardener response discusses starting seed indoors six or more weeks before the last frost or direct sowing after the soil reaches 70°F. Follow the directions on your packet and use local frost and soil conditions to choose a sowing date.
Seed-grown plants also may not reproduce the exact traits of a named cultivar. The Ohio response raises this issue for ‘Becky’; do not assume seed-grown plants will match a named cultivar propagated vegetatively.

The listing says the flowers close at night and during overcast weather, and calls for full sun and dry, gritty soil. This is a distinct group from Shasta daisies, not simply a color mix of the same perennial.

Planting and caring for Shasta daisies
Choose the site
UF/IFAS recommends well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade for Shasta daisies, and cautions against overwatering. Its guidance reflects Florida conditions; the Chicago Botanic Garden’s local profile recommends full sun and moist, rich, well-drained soil for Chicago-area plantings. Both point to drainage and sunlight as key considerations, but local climate affects how those recommendations translate to your garden.

Time seed sowing to the packet and your conditions
- Eden Brothers lists direct sowing in spring or fall at 1/4 inch.
- The Ohio State Extension Master Gardener response suggests starting indoors six or more weeks before the last frost, or direct sowing when soil reaches 70°F.
- Germania Seed’s 2026 catalog says Shasta seed needs light to germinate, so do not cover it according to that catalog’s directions.
These instructions differ by supplier and method. Use the packet for the seed you have, and account for your local frost dates and soil temperature rather than treating one schedule as universal.
Maintain established plants
UF/IFAS recommends avoiding overwatering and deadheading spent flowers. These are care recommendations for growing plants; they are separate from seed-starting directions.

Shasta daisies do not perform identically in every climate. UF/IFAS says Central and South Florida heat can make them behave as annuals. In Chicago, the Chicago Botanic Garden describes English daisy as a short edging plant that is biennial locally and whose flowers may fade in summer heat.

How to choose
- Choose Shasta daisy seed if you want the classic white perennial and can provide a sunny, well-drained site.
- Consider ‘Alaska’ if you want a taller Shasta option, while treating the 2026 catalog’s height and bloom details as listed specifications rather than guaranteed results.
- Choose a mixed African daisy if you want annual color in a shorter planting and can meet the listing’s full-sun, dry-soil preference.
- Compare botanical names and local suitability before buying any seed sold simply as “daisy.”
