“Country decorative tile” is a style, not one standard material. The look can come from handmade encaustic cement, patterned inlaid ceramic, or porcelain printed with an aged, natural appearance. To choose well, match the material and its care requirements to the room, then assess the actual tile’s pattern, finish, and variation in a sample.
What does “country decorative tile” mean?
It can describe tiles with traditional motifs, handcrafted character, or an aged, natural-looking surface. Suppliers use the country look for products made in different ways, so the label alone does not tell you how a tile is constructed, where it is suitable, or how it should be installed and maintained.
Three options illustrate the distinction: handmade encaustic cement, inlaid ceramic with patterns formed from contrasting clays, and porcelain stoneware with wood-effect graphics and an antique appearance. These are supplier descriptions, not independent comparative tests.
Which material is right for your project?
| Option | How the look is made | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Handmade encaustic cement | BongTiles describes handmade encaustic cement tiles and says of its handcrafted products, “Each tile is unique.” Expect possible variation from tile to tile. | Confirm suitability for the intended location, and review the product’s installation, sealing, grout, and cleaning guidance. BongTiles’ cement-tile installation guide gives instructions specific to its cement tile. |
| Inlaid ceramic encaustic | Country Floors describes high-fired ceramic clay with patterns formed from contrasting clay colors, including historical motifs. | Check the individual product’s intended application, pattern, finish, and specifications before installation. Country Floors’ encaustic tile collection describes its products. |
| Porcelain with a country look | Cotto d’Este describes its Country collection as porcelain stoneware with wood-effect graphics and an antique, lived-in appearance. | Verify the specific product’s suitability and guarantee terms. The manufacturer advertises a 20-year guarantee for this collection on its Country collection page; check current terms with the supplier. |
These supplier descriptions do not establish a universal winner for durability, ease of care, or environmental impact. Choose by the actual product specification and the look you want, rather than assuming that all tiles described as “country” perform alike.

How to compare samples and specifications
- Start with the location. Identify where the tile will go and check that the selected product is stated to be suitable for that application. Country Floors advises reviewing individual product specifications before installation.
- Order a sample and view it in place. Bert & May recommends samples because color and finish can look different in home lighting. Assess the tile where it will be installed, alongside the room’s fixed finishes and light.
- Decide how much variation you want. Handmade tiles may differ from one another. Consider whether that variation suits the design, and ask the supplier how the installed product may vary from the sample.
- Read the technical details before ordering. Check thickness, finish, format, grout guidance, sealing requirements, and any installer qualifications or handling instructions stated for that product.
- Confirm care requirements. Ask what cleaners and maintenance methods are compatible with the exact tile, grout, and sealer you select.
Bert & May publishes separate care and installation guides for different tile types and describes that guidance as intended for certified trade professionals. Its care and installation information is a useful example of why a single set of instructions should not be applied to every material.
Installation and care depend on the tile
Do not treat cement, ceramic, and porcelain as interchangeable during installation or cleaning. Follow the selected product’s instructions, including any guidance on adhesive coverage, sealing, grout, and permitted cleaning products. If the project or product calls for professional installation, use an appropriately qualified tile installer; Bert & May provides a recommended-installer resource, though its geographic coverage and referral terms are not specified.

For its handmade cement tile, BongTiles recommends full adhesive coverage and pH-neutral detergent, warns against acidic or alkaline cleaners, and provides additional sealing and grout instructions in its installation guide. Those directions apply to the supplier’s cement tiles; they are not general instructions for ceramic or porcelain. If considering a pH-neutral tile cleaner, check that its label allows use on your exact tile and any applied sealer.
