Best Corded Screw Guns for Power and Precision

Choose a corded screw gun by task, depth control and handling—not RPM alone. Compare two documented drywall models and what to verify before buying.

The right corded screw gun depends on what you are fastening: a high-speed drywall gun is not automatically the best tool for every screw-driving job. For drywall work, prioritize a controllable depth stop and handling; for other applications, confirm that the tool is designed for the material and task. Two useful examples are DEWALT’s DW255 high-speed drywall gun and Bosch’s PRO GSR 6-25 TE, which pairs a lower stated speed with a shut-off clutch and depth stop.

How to choose a corded screw gun

Start with the material, framing and fastening pattern—not the largest RPM figure. Speed and torque describe different properties, and figures from different tools do not by themselves establish which will perform better for your job. Depth control is especially important in drywall: a depth stop or shut-off clutch helps drive screws consistently without relying only on trigger control.

  • Application: Confirm that the tool is intended for your material and fastening task. A drywall screw gun is specialized for drywall fastening; do not assume it is suitable for decking, subfloors or metal fastening.
  • Depth control: Look for an adjustable nose, depth stop or shut-off clutch when repeatable screw depth matters.
  • Feed system: Individual loading is straightforward for intermittent work. A compatible collated magazine can reduce repeated loading during high-volume fastening, but adds an attachment and may affect handling.
  • Handling and reach: Consider weight, grip and overhead use, as well as whether the cord reaches the work area without restricting movement.
  • Local availability: Check the exact model and specifications in your market. Listings and stock vary by retailer and location.

Two corded models to compare

Model Documented specifications and controls Best fit to consider Qualification
DEWALT DW255 DEWALT lists it as a 5,300 RPM high-speed VSR drywall screw gun. Bob Vila reports a 6-amp motor, 2.9-pound weight, three-position depth adjustment and 8-foot cord. Drywall fastening where high stated speed and adjustable depth are priorities. Bob Vila named it its best corded pick. Its reported specifications and assessment are editorial claims; verify the current model and local listing. Bob Vila’s guide; DEWALT product page.
Bosch PRO GSR 6-25 TE Bosch lists 701 W rated input power, 0–2,500 rpm no-load speed, up to 20 Nm torque for soft screwdriving applications, a 1/4-inch hex bit holder and 1.5 kg weight. It has a depth stop and shut-off clutch. Drywall screws into wood or metal substructures when controlled depth and a compatible magazine option are useful. Bosch’s product page is for Saudi Arabia; confirm local availability and specifications. The 20 Nm figure is specified for soft screwdriving applications, not as a universal comparison. Compatible with Bosch’s MA 55 Professional magazine attachment. Bosch Professional specifications.

The figures are not an apples-to-apples ranking: the DW255’s 5,300 RPM and the Bosch’s 0–2,500 rpm no-load speed do not establish which tool is more suitable for a particular material. Match the tool to the job and its depth-control needs.

What a drywall screw gun does differently

A drywall screw gun is designed around driving drywall screws to a controlled depth, commonly using a nose cone or other depth stop. Some screw guns can also accept an automatic or collated screw-feeding attachment. These features make repetitive drywall fastening more consistent and can reduce individual screw loading, but they do not make every drywall gun a general-purpose construction screw gun.

DEWALT Drywall Screw Gun, 6.0-Amp (DW255)
  • Depth-sensitive, "set and forget" nosepiece for consistent fastener depth
  • Two-finger trigger for increased comfort and ease of use
  • 5,300 RPM high speed motor for production drywall hanging

Bosch describes the GSR 6-25 TE as intended for drywall screws into wood or metal substructures and documents compatibility with its MA 55 magazine. Check the attachment’s compatibility with the exact tool version before buying; magazine feeding is not inherent to every screw gun.

How much weight to give published testing

Bob Vila reports testing three products over three days and performing four tests. Its described test drove screws through half-inch drywall into standard wall studs; the article says it did not test on metal studs. Treat its DW255 selection as that publisher’s editorial assessment, not a universal result or a test of every corded screw gun. Bob Vila’s testing and guide.

That test setup can inform a drywall buyer, but it does not establish performance for metal studs, other materials or different fastening work. For those jobs, use the manufacturer’s stated application and specifications as the starting point.
