Short answer: Sleep Foundation’s 2026 cooling-mattress guide names the Helix Midnight Luxe its overall pick, citing its breathable Tencel cover, gel-infused foams and pocketed coils. That is one publisher’s ranking, not a guarantee that it will suit every hot sleeper. Reddit discussions can surface practical questions, but individual comments are anecdotes—not comparative product testing.
If you are comparing mattresses, look beyond “cooling” labels: consider the support core, comfort-layer materials, firmness and how well the mattress suits your sleeping position. If you already like your mattress, breathable bedding or a topper may be worth trying before replacing it.
What Reddit can—and cannot—tell you about cooling mattresses
A question in r/Mattress puts the problem plainly: “I need cooling mattress recommendations, what should hot sleepers look for?” The October 2, 2026 discussion is useful as an example of the questions shoppers ask about mattress construction, bedding, room conditions and active cooling. It is not a representative survey, and commenters’ experiences do not establish which mattress performs best.
For a more structured shortlist, Sleep Foundation’s 2026 guide to cooling mattresses names Helix Midnight Luxe its overall pick. The guide says its team used thermal measurement tools to assess heat retention and then tested 30 strong cooling models further. Those are Sleep Foundation’s selection and testing claims, not testing conducted for this article.

How to judge whether a mattress may sleep cooler
Start with the support core and airflow
Air-permeable construction can let cooler air move into the mattress and help relieve heat buildup. Hybrid and innerspring designs often have an advantage because their coil cores allow more internal air movement. Latex is also commonly made with open-cell or perforated construction. But the entire mattress matters: dense comfort layers can change how breathable the finished design feels.

Sleep Foundation’s temperature-control methodology explains that a mattress’s temperature performance varies with its materials, formulation, firmness and overall construction. Its guidance, updated January 5, 2024, does not support treating any one construction type as a guarantee of cool sleep.

Close-conforming layers can leave less space for air to circulate around the body, which may make heat harder to dissipate. Traditional memory foam and many all-foam mattresses can retain more heat than coil-based designs, but there are exceptions: some all-foam models regulate temperature well, and specialty materials or layering can change the result.
Gel infusion is not a reliable shortcut by itself. Sleep Foundation’s mattress-types guide notes that the effect of gel depends on the design and is debated. Look at the full construction rather than assuming that a material name proves a mattress will stay cool all night.

Match cooling to comfort and support
A mattress that feels cooler but does not suit your preferred firmness, sleep position or pressure-relief needs may not be the right choice. Compare those factors alongside temperature control. A cooling ranking is not a substitute for evaluating whether the mattress supports your body comfortably.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If you like your mattress, try bedding or a topper first
When the mattress itself is comfortable, changing the sleep surface may be a lower-commitment way to address heat. Sleep Foundation’s guide to making a memory foam mattress sleep cooler discusses breathable sheets such as cotton, linen, rayon and percale, as well as breathable or cooling toppers and pads.
Topper and pad options include latex, gel-infused foam, breathable designs and phase-change materials. Specialized products may use temperature-controlled water. These are options to evaluate, not guaranteed fixes: the effect depends on the product and the bed beneath it.

Active bed cooling is a different category
A mattress advertised as cooling generally relies on passive design features or materials. An active bed-cooling system uses powered equipment to alter the temperature at the sleep surface. Sleep Foundation’s 2026 bed-cooling-systems guide describes three approaches:
- Water systems: A cover with tubes connects to a reservoir and control unit.
- Air systems: A pump sends warmed or cooled air through a cover.
- Thermoelectric systems: Electric current makes one side of certain materials heat or cool.
Before choosing a system, check how it fits your setup and whether its ongoing requirements work for you. Relevant questions include:
- Does it fit your mattress height and bed arrangement?
- Can each side be controlled separately if two sleepers want different settings?
- Where must the control unit sit, and how much space does it need?
- Does it require a subscription, internet connection or a phone app, and can it work offline?
- Are sleep tracking and other smart features useful to you?
- Could pets interfere with the system or its tubing?
- Does the total cost fit your budget?
