Short answer: The Purple RestorePlus Hybrid is the strongest cooling-first choice based on a published independent thermal test. For a more conventional hybrid feel, choose the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Cooling. Side sleepers who want deeper cushioning should consider the Helix Midnight Luxe with GlacioTex, while shoppers committed to memory foam should compare the TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze with the Casper Snow. The Avocado Green is a strong latex-and-organic-materials option. If a passive mattress still leaves you sweating, an active system such as the Eight Sleep Pod 5, Sleep Number ClimateCool or Climate360, or BedJet 3 can control temperature more directly.

There is no universally coolest mattress. A cool-to-the-touch cover, a mattress that resists heat buildup for eight hours, and a mechanically chilled bed are different things. Your bedding, room humidity, sleep position, body size, partner, medications, and the way you sink into the mattress can matter as much as the mattress label.

This guide is for the U.S. market and reflects the product information and published testing available on August 10, 2026. Mattress prices, discounts, bundles, optional cooling covers, return fees, and subscription terms change frequently, so verify the queen-size price and complete policy at checkout rather than relying on a permanent list price.

Eight Sleep Pod 5 Active water-temperature cover Direct, independent temperature control for each side Fits an existing mattress and currently advertises cooling to 55°F and heating to 110°F 30-night trial; plan choices and warranty terms vary High cost, water equipment, app and plan considerations
BedJet 3 Active air system Cooling or drying an existing mattress Thermostat-regulated air from 66°F to 109°F; no water inside the bed 60-day trial; two-year warranty Moves air rather than directly chilling the mattress

Price note: Exact queen prices are intentionally not presented as fixed facts. Mattress companies frequently combine sale prices, coupons, reference prices, bundles, and paid cooling upgrades. Brooklyn Bedding specifically notes that its strike-through reference price may not represent a prevailing or former market price. Check the live product page, record the date, and confirm whether the GlacioTex, CoolForce, pillow top, foundation, delivery, removal, and return fees are included.

What a cooling mattress can—and cannot—do

People use cooling to describe three separate effects:

#1 Best Overall
Sweetnight CoolNest 14 Inch King Size Mattress,Cooling Memory Foam Mattress
  • CoolNest System for a Cooler Night - The CoolNest 14-inch king size mattress features our innovative CoolNest System, combining PCM high-resilience foam with gel-infused memory foam for layered cooling comfort. This advanced system helps dissipate heat and maintain a cooler surface throughout the night, creating a cooler and more comfortable sleep environment for hot sleepers.
  • 5-Zone Support for Pressure Relief - Engineered with a 5-zone design, this king foam mattress integrates support foam and comfort foam to help cushion pressure areas from head to toe. It helps redistribute pressure while maintaining stability and balanced support for enhanced comfort. Recognized by the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), it's designed to promote a more restful sleep experience.
  • Motion Isolation for Undisturbed Sleep - Constructed with multiple layers of memory foam, the CoolNest 14-inch king memory foam mattress helps absorb motion and reduce vibrations. Additionally, these layers work synergistically to minimize motion transfer, so you're less likely to be disturbed whether your partner shifts positions or gets up during the night. Wake up feeling more refreshed.
  • Enhanced Breathability for Cooler Comfort - The CoolNest cover incorporates 3D-woven technology, featuring a ventilation pore design that improves breathability by 35% compared to standard fabrics. Also, the PCM high-resilience foam with a hollow structure promotes 3X airflow. Together, these features help to wick away moisture and adapt to body temperature for a cooler, drier sleep surface.
  • Restful Sleep & King Size Mattress in a Box - The Sweetnight CoolNest gel-infused memory foam mattress features CertiPUR-US certified foams and an certified cover, which provides a comfortable sleep environment. The 14-inch king size mattress is compressed in a box for easy setup. Additionally, it comes with a 10-year protection. Please allow the Sweetnight mattress to fully expand for 72 hours.
  1. Cool-to-the-touch sensation: A cover with high thermal conductivity draws heat away from your skin quickly, so it feels cool when you first lie down. That sensation can fade once the surface and your body approach the same temperature.
  2. Passive temperature regulation: Coils, air space, latex, breathable fibers, conductive materials, and phase-change materials can slow heat buildup or move heat through the surface. They do not generate cold.
  3. Active cooling: A mechanical device circulates chilled water or air and can control the bed more directly. This is the category that can lower the sleep surface below the surrounding room temperature.

As Consumer Reports explains, gels and other passive mattress materials cannot actively cool a sleeper. Fans or chilled-water equipment are needed for active cooling. A mattress marketed with a snowflake, gel, copper, graphite, or phase-change label is still a passive mattress unless it includes a powered temperature-control system.

Why you may sleep hot

Heat accumulates in the entire sleep microclimate: your body, mattress, protector, sheets, blanket, sleepwear, partner, pet, room, and humidity. A mattress is only one layer of that system. Research on sleep environments links thermal comfort with skin temperature, sweating, bedding, and sleepwear, but the ideal setup varies by person. See the review of sleep environments and sleep physiology for the relationship between those factors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common reasons for overheating include:

  • A dense foam comfort layer holds heat close to the body.
  • A deep cradle limits air movement around the torso and hips and makes movement harder.
  • A waterproof protector, polyester sheets, microfiber blanket, duvet, or weighted blanket blocks the mattress surface.
  • High humidity makes sweat evaporate less effectively, so the same room temperature feels warmer.
  • A partner or pet adds heat to the same sleep zone.
  • Body size, sleep position, age, hormonal changes, medications, illness, and room temperature alter heat production or perception.
  • A topper placed over a cooling mattress masks the material intended to regulate heat.
  • A poorly ventilated platform or enclosed foundation restricts airflow beneath the bed.

For that reason, replacing a mattress may not solve the problem if the main bottleneck is a thick protector, heavy bedding, or a warm room. A general room-temperature range sometimes recommended in mattress coverage is 60–68°F, but treat that as general guidance rather than a universal medical requirement; humidity, bedding, and personal preference matter too.

Why the experts disagree about the best cooling mattress

Current guides name different winners: RTINGS recommends the Purple RestorePlus Hybrid for cooling, Forbes Vetted selects the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Cooling overall, Sleep Foundation names the Helix Midnight Luxe overall, Tom’s Guide gives its temperature-regulation distinction to the Bear Elite Hybrid, and Good Housekeeping also highlights Purple. That is not necessarily a contradiction.

RTINGS, Consumer Reports, Sleep Foundation, Tom’s Guide, Forbes Vetted, and Good Housekeeping use different test equipment, rooms, scoring systems, test windows, home testers, sleeper profiles, and definitions of success. Their numerical scores are not directly interchangeable. One lab may emphasize eight-hour heat retention; another may balance temperature with pressure relief, motion isolation, delivery, and value.

RTINGS’ result is especially useful for a cooling-first decision because it publishes first-hour and eight-hour energy-transfer results. Consumer Reports uses a heated copper plate in a controlled chamber and measures heat retention over as many as eight or ten hours. Sleep Foundation combines material analysis, lab testing, and as much as three weeks of home testing. Those approaches answer related but different questions.

The rankings below therefore use evidence in this order: independent prolonged thermal testing; repeated home testing with stated conditions; construction features that plausibly support airflow or heat transfer; manufacturer testing with a disclosed comparator; and finally, a cool-touch marketing claim by itself.

The best cooling mattresses in 2026

1. Purple RestorePlus Hybrid: best for cooling performance alone

Choose it if: Your first priority is reducing heat buildup and you are open to a distinctive, responsive mattress feel.

Why it stands out: RTINGS gives the Purple RestorePlus Hybrid a 9.9 cooling score and reports 121 kJ of energy transferred during the first hour and 318 kJ over eight hours. Those are results from RTINGS’ testing methodology, not a universal conversion to how many degrees cooler every sleeper will feel. The mattress uses a 3-inch GelFlex Grid over zoned coils, giving air more open space than a conventional solid foam core. See the RTINGS test and comparison and Purple’s current product details.

The grid is buoyant and responsive rather than slow and enveloping. That can make changing positions easier and reduce the stuck-in-foam sensation, but some sleepers dislike the unusual flex or feel the grid through the cover. It is not automatically the best choice for every side sleeper, firmness preference, or couple.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Purple currently lists a 100-night trial, a request to sleep on the mattress for at least 21 nights before returning it, and a 10-year warranty. Its base guidance calls for a solid surface, slats less than 3.5 inches apart, or a suitably rated adjustable base; Purple says not to use the mattress with a traditional box spring. Verify the current requirements before delivery because an unsuitable base can affect performance and warranty eligibility.

Purple also promotes a claim that the RestorePlus is three times cooler, based on its own 2023 thermal and heat-flux study. That is manufacturer testing and should not be treated as an independent industry benchmark.

2. Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Cooling: best conventional cooling hybrid

Choose it if: You want a recognizable hybrid feel, several firmness choices, and a more conventional alternative to Purple’s grid.

Why it stands out: Forbes Vetted names the Aurora Luxe Cooling its overall cooling-mattress pick, and Sleep Foundation includes it as a comfortable cooling choice. The current construction combines coils with a GlacioTex cooling cover, cooling gel, and copper. Multiple firmness options make it easier to match the bed to a side, back, stomach, or combination sleeper than a one-feel model. The product specifications are on Brooklyn Bedding’s current Aurora page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Aurora is a strong all-around candidate, but its cooling claims should be separated from independent thermal scores. A hybrid core creates useful air space, yet thick foam comfort layers, a pillow-top configuration, a waterproof protector, or heavy bedding can still make the completed bed warm.

Brooklyn Bedding currently lists a 120-night trial, a 30-day minimum before a return, and a limited lifetime warranty. The current return policy includes a $99 return fee. Check whether the selected firmness, cover upgrade, sale, or retailer purchase changes those terms. Do not treat a displayed reference price as a stable market price; the company itself warns that its strike-through price may not represent a prevailing or former price.

3. Helix Midnight Luxe with GlacioTex: best cooling choice for many side sleepers

Choose it if: You sleep on your side, need cushioning at the shoulder and hip, and prefer a medium, supportive hybrid to a springy latex or grid bed.

Why it stands out: The current Helix Midnight Luxe is a 13.5-inch hybrid with a medium feel and zoned lumbar support. The optional GlacioTex Cooling Cover and optional CoolForce temperature-regulating layer provide two different upgrade paths. Its substantial comfort layers cushion pressure points, and the hybrid core preserves more responsiveness than an all-foam mattress. See Helix’s product page and its GlacioTex information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sleep Foundation names the Midnight Luxe its overall cooling mattress, while Forbes Vetted names it a side-sleeper pick. That is a useful profile match, not proof that every side sleeper will find it coolest. The pillow-top and foam comfort system may feel warmer and more enveloping than latex, coils with a thinner comfort layer, or Purple’s grid. The cooling cover and CoolForce layer also add cost, so compare the upgraded configuration rather than assuming the base model has the same thermal behavior.

Helix lists a 120-night trial with a 30-day adjustment period and a limited lifetime warranty. Current terms describe free return or exchange options, but confirm the policy for the exact order and any upgrade.

4. Bear Elite Hybrid: best for hot sleepers who also need pressure relief

Choose it if: You want a supportive hybrid with soft, medium, or firm choices and are interested in a cooling upgrade without giving up foam cushioning.

Why it stands out: Tom’s Guide reports a 5/5 temperature-regulation score for the Bear Elite Hybrid based on its studio and at-home evaluation. The current 14-inch model offers soft, medium, and firm options, zoned coils, a Celliant cover, and an optional CoolForce layer. Bear lists CertiPUR-US foam, GREENGUARD Gold certification, and a fiberglass-free construction claim on its current page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Celliant is a branded textile technology, not a reason to promise medical or recovery outcomes. Bear’s own discussion says its pilot-study results were not achieved by all study subjects and that further studies are warranted. Describe the cover as a product feature that may affect feel or heat handling, not as clinically proven to improve recovery, oxygenation, pain, or sleep for everyone. Product details and the company’s qualifications are at Bear’s Elite Hybrid page.

Bear currently lists a 120-night trial, a 30-night break-in period, free return pickup, and a limited lifetime warranty. A firmer version may suit stomach or back sleepers who want less body immersion; side sleepers may prefer the softer or medium choice, depending on body weight and pressure sensitivity.

5. TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze: best for maximum memory-foam contouring

Choose it if: You love deep Tempur-Pedic pressure relief and are willing to pay a premium for the brand’s most cooling-oriented memory-foam line.

Why it stands out: TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze is designed for sleepers who want a close, contouring foam feel rather than a bouncy hybrid or latex surface. Tempur-Pedic says LuxeBreeze feels up to 10°F cooler than ProAdapt, based on an eight-hour average heat-index comparison. That is a manufacturer comparison against a specific Tempur-Pedic model—not a promise that every sleeper will experience a 10°F reduction. The current collection includes soft, firm, and medium-hybrid choices. See the TEMPUR-Breeze collection and the company’s explanation of the comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trade-off is the same feature that attracts many memory-foam buyers: deep conformity. A sleeper who sinks far into the bed may feel warmer and may find turning more difficult than on latex, coils, or a grid. If you want cooling foam but a less traditionally stuck sensation, the Casper Snow is the better direction to investigate.

Direct Tempur-Pedic purchases currently include a 90-night trial with at least 30 nights required, a 10-year warranty, and a possible $175 return-shipping fee. Trial availability and return charges can differ when buying through a third-party retailer.

6. Casper Snow: best cooling memory foam for a less enveloping feel

Choose it if: You want foam pressure relief but do not want the deepest, slowest memory-foam hug.

Why it stands out: Casper identifies Snow as a cooling memory-foam hybrid, and RTINGS lists Casper Snow as its best cooling memory-foam mattress. It is a useful middle ground: more cushioning and motion isolation than a spring-dominant bed, but intended to feel less traditionally trapped than the most conforming memory foam. RTINGS’ comparison still places it below the Purple for cooling performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Casper’s current product page lists a 100-night trial and a 10-year limited warranty. Confirm that you are reviewing the U.S. version; product specifications and availability can differ between the United States and Canada. See Casper’s current Snow page and the RTINGS comparison.

7. Avocado Green: best latex-and-organic-materials option

Choose it if: You prefer a breathable, buoyant surface, want latex and coil airflow, and value specified organic certifications.

Why it stands out: Avocado lists GOLS-certified latex, GOTS-certified wool and cotton, and more than 1,400 pocketed coils. Latex generally allows easier movement and feels less heat-trapping than highly conforming conventional memory foam. The current Green Mattress page lists a 365-night trial and a 25-year warranty. Details are available at Avocado and its materials and certifications page.

Do not equate organic with coolest. GOTS and GOLS address particular textile and latex standards; they are not universal temperature-performance certifications. The standard Green feel can be firm and springy, and a pillow-top or different comfort level materially changes pressure relief and heat behavior. Latex can also have an initial odor, feel too firm for some side sleepers, or raise allergy concerns for a small number of shoppers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Avocado currently lists a one-year trial with a 30-day minimum and a $99 return fee under its return policy. Confirm the exact terms for the model and comfort configuration selected.

8. Saatva Classic: best breathable innerspring with setup included

Choose it if: You want a traditional innerspring feel, multiple firmness options, and white-glove delivery rather than a deeply contouring foam bed.

Why it stands out: The Saatva Classic is available in 11.5- and 14.5-inch heights and Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm feels. Its open coil construction and breathable design make it a sensible starting point for hot sleepers who prefer a traditional surface. Saatva currently lists a 365-night home trial, free in-room delivery and setup, free mattress removal, and a lifetime warranty. See Saatva’s current Classic specifications.

The Classic may feel cooler and easier to move on than dense memory foam, but it may not relieve shoulder and hip pressure as effectively for every side sleeper. A Luxury Firm or Firm version can be a better match for some back and stomach sleepers, while a very plush configuration may increase body immersion and warmth. Breathability is an advantage, not a guarantee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Eight Sleep Pod 5: best active cooling for precise control

Choose it if: You like your existing mattress or need each side of the bed controlled independently, and passive cooling has not solved the problem.

Why it stands out: The Pod 5 is not a mattress. It is a temperature-controlled cover that fits over an existing mattress and circulates water through the bed surface. Eight Sleep currently advertises independent cooling and heating on both sides, cooling down to 55°F, heating to 110°F, sleep tracking, and a 30-night trial. Its current plan choices list Standard at $17 per month or $199 annually, Enhanced at $25 per month or $299 annually, and Elite at $33 per month or $399 annually. Plan requirements, included features, and warranty coverage should be checked at checkout because the required plan can depend on the configuration and level of coverage.

This is the most direct solution in the guide for a sleeper whose comfortable mattress is simply too warm. It also adds a water-based system, hoses, controls, app dependence, setup, maintenance, upfront cost, and recurring-plan considerations. Read the current Pod 5 product and plan details before treating the advertised temperature as the actual skin temperature you will experience.

10. BedJet 3: best active air upgrade for an existing mattress

Choose it if: You want to cool or dry the sleep environment without replacing your mattress or putting water equipment in the bed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it stands out: BedJet 3 uses air, works with existing mattresses and bed frames, and advertises thermostat-regulated air from 66°F to 109°F. The company says there are no water or electrical components inside the bed. It currently lists a 60-day return period and a two-year warranty. See BedJet’s product page.

The stated range is the system’s regulated air range, not a guarantee that your skin or mattress surface reaches that temperature. BedJet can be particularly useful for sweat drying and airflow, but it may not suit someone who dislikes moving air or wants conductive cooling beneath the body. It is an active cooling alternative, not a cooling mattress.

Which mattress construction sleeps coolest?

Hybrid and innerspring

Coils create internal air space, so hybrid and innerspring mattresses are usually the safest default for hot sleepers. Consumer Reports generally finds that innerspring mattresses retain less heat than foam, while emphasizing that the complete construction determines the result. A hybrid with a thick, dense foam pillow top may sleep warmer than a thinner all-foam or latex design. Inspect the mattress layer by layer rather than stopping at the word hybrid.

Latex

Latex is buoyant, responsive, and typically less enveloping than conventional memory foam. That lets you change position more easily and can reduce the sensation of being surrounded by warm foam. The trade-offs are a springier feel, potential firmness, possible latex odor or allergy concerns, and less deep pressure relief for people who prefer a slow cradle.

Memory foam

Memory foam is excellent at pressure relief and motion isolation, but a thick, highly conforming comfort layer has a greater heat-retention risk. Gel-infused, copper-infused, graphite-infused, and open-cell foam are construction details—not proof of superior all-night cooling. The Casper Snow and TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze are better compared by feel, pressure relief, and test evidence than by the presence of a cooling ingredient.

Grid or elastic-polymer designs

Purple’s GelFlex Grid uses open columns that can promote airflow while flexing under the body. It feels more responsive and distinctive than conventional foam. Some people like the localized flex; others dislike the unusual surface or feel that the grid is noticeable through the cover. The construction explains why the Purple performs well in RTINGS’ cooling test, but does not make it a universal comfort match.

Adjustable-air and smart beds

Adjustable-air beds can change firmness and, in some models, add active cooling. They also introduce pumps, controls, sensors, software, warranties, and potential repair points. Sleep Number’s current ClimateCool and Climate360 systems actively cool, while Climate360 also actively warms; the sides can be controlled independently through the system. SmartTemp programs use the Sleep Number app, with manual temperature control available through the remote. See Sleep Number’s Climate collection information and its SmartTemp instructions.

Cooling technologies: what the labels really mean

Breathable covers

Tencel, cotton, wool, and specialty conductive fabrics can improve moisture handling or initial heat transfer. The useful question is not whether the cover says cooling, but what fibers and construction it uses and whether the layers underneath allow heat to leave. A breathable cover cannot fully compensate for a dense comfort core or a plastic-backed protector.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Phase-change materials

Phase-change materials absorb, store, and release heat as they change state. They can moderate temperature swings, but their heat-storage capacity is finite. They are not a refrigerator or air conditioner. Sleep Foundation’s cooling-mattress guide describes phase-change materials as heat storage and release rather than continuous refrigeration.

Gel

Gel can change heat capacity and surface feel, but a gel label alone does not predict low heat retention. Consumer Reports specifically cautions that the phrase cooling gel is not reliable proof that a mattress will remain cool through the night. Look for prolonged thermal testing or a construction that creates meaningful airflow.

Copper and graphite

Copper and graphite are conductive additives intended to move heat through or away from the comfort layer. They may be reasonable design choices, but describe them as features unless independent comparative testing supports a stronger conclusion.

Moisture-wicking fibers

Wicking can move sweat away from the skin and improve comfort, but it is not the same as lowering body temperature. If the underlying mattress and room remain hot, a wicking cover may leave you dry but still overheated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best choice by sleeper and situation

For chronic hot sleepers

Start with the Purple RestorePlus if you want the strongest published passive cooling result. Consider the Bear Elite Hybrid if you need more familiar cushioning and firmness choices. If you regularly wake drenched despite breathable bedding and a reasonable room environment, skip directly to an active system such as Eight Sleep, Sleep Number ClimateCool or Climate360, or BedJet 3.

For side sleepers

Pressure relief matters as much as airflow. The Helix Midnight Luxe, Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Cooling, and Bear Elite Hybrid offer cushioning with hybrid support. A very firm latex or innerspring bed may sleep cool but still be a poor purchase if your shoulder and hip develop pressure points. Choose firmness according to body weight, shoulder width, hip width, and how deeply you prefer to sink.

For back sleepers

Look for stable lumbar support, enough surface compliance to avoid a hard pressure ridge, and a surface that does not let the pelvis sink excessively. The Aurora, Bear, Helix, Purple, and Saatva Classic all offer different routes to that balance. A mattress that is too soft can increase body immersion and warmth even when its coil core is breathable.

For stomach sleepers

Pelvic support and ease of movement usually deserve priority. The Firm Saatva Classic, a firmer Aurora, or a firmer Bear may be more sensible starting points than a deeply contouring memory-foam model. Verify the feel during the trial rather than assuming that firm automatically means cool or supportive for every body type.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For combination sleepers

Choose a responsive surface that makes turning easy. Purple’s grid, latex, coils, and many hybrids generally feel easier to move across than slow, deeply conforming foam. Cooling is not useful if the mattress keeps you trapped in one warm position.

For heavier sleepers

Support, edge stability, and durability become especially important. Greater sink can increase body immersion, warmth, and the risk of premature sagging. Check the manufacturer’s weight guidance, foundation capacity, and warranty terms. A cool mattress that sags is not a successful hot-sleeper purchase.

For couples with different temperature preferences

A passive mattress can only compromise between two people. If one partner wants warmth and the other wants aggressive cooling, an Eight Sleep Pod 5 or Sleep Number ClimateCool or Climate360 offers independent side controls. For ordinary mattress construction, prioritize motion isolation and look for a hybrid or foam comfort system that does not transfer every movement.

For a firm cooling mattress

Start with the Firm version of the Saatva Classic, a firmer Aurora, or a firm Bear Elite Hybrid. The correct answer depends on support and pressure distribution, not just the label. Latex and coil-forward designs tend to feel firmer and more buoyant than memory foam, but a firm mattress can still sleep warm if it has dense surface foam and heavy bedding.

For night sweats or hot flashes

A breathable mattress, lightweight bedding, lower humidity, and an active temperature-control system may reduce heat and moisture discomfort. They do not treat the cause of night sweats or hot flashes. If night sweats occur regularly, interrupt sleep, or come with fever, unexplained weight loss, pain, cough, diarrhea, or other concerning symptoms, consult a health professional. The Mayo Clinic’s guidance explains when medical evaluation is appropriate.

For shoppers on a budget

Do not assume replacing the entire mattress is the cheapest fix. First test lighter sheets, a less insulating blanket, a breathable protector, improved room ventilation, or an air-based upgrade. BedJet 3 is a lower-cost active alternative in the product categories covered here, although its live price should be compared with a mattress replacement and it cools through air rather than a chilled surface.

For people who already like their mattress

Try changing the sleep system before changing the bed. An Eight Sleep Pod 5 adds water-based temperature control to an existing mattress; BedJet 3 adds air; a lighter protector and bedding may solve a surface bottleneck at much lower cost. Do not put a thick foam topper over a cooling surface and then judge the mattress by the resulting heat.

How cooling mattresses should be tested

A hand pressed against a cover for 30 seconds measures initial sensation, not all-night heat retention. A more credible test separates cool touch from prolonged thermal performance:

  1. Test each mattress in the same room with controlled temperature and humidity.
  2. Use the same base, sheets, protector, blanket, and testing window.
  3. Record initial surface temperature, temperature after 15 minutes, temperature after one hour, temperature after eight hours, and recovery time after the sleeper or heated object leaves.
  4. Use a heated plate, thermal manikin, heat-flux instrument, or calibrated thermal camera rather than relying only on touch.
  5. Test multiple body weights and sleep positions. A mattress can feel cool to a light back sleeper and warm to a heavier side sleeper who sinks further into the comfort layer.
  6. Score pressure relief, motion isolation, edge support, ease of movement, firmness, and heat separately. A cool mattress is not automatically a good mattress.
  7. Record whether the sample includes an optional cooling cover, pillow top, CoolForce layer, GlacioTex upgrade, or active system.
  8. Repeat with and without a waterproof protector when that reflects the real use case.

Consumer Reports uses a heated copper plate in a controlled chamber for long heat-retention testing. RTINGS publishes first-hour and eight-hour energy-transfer data. Sleep Foundation combines lab work with home testing lasting up to three weeks. These results should be presented with their test window and method, not collapsed into one supposedly universal cooling score.

Do not confuse a camping mattress R-value with residential all-night cooling. ASTM F3340-22 addresses thermal resistance for camping mattresses; it is not a universal residential standard for how cool a bed feels over eight hours.

How to choose: a practical decision tree

  • Cooling performance matters more than familiar feel: Start with the Purple RestorePlus Hybrid. If passive cooling is inadequate, move to Eight Sleep or BedJet.
  • You want a conventional all-around hybrid: Compare the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Cooling with the Bear Elite Hybrid.
  • You are a side sleeper who needs cushioning: Compare the Helix Midnight Luxe, Aurora Luxe, and Bear Elite in the firmness levels that protect your shoulder and hip.
  • You want traditional memory-foam pressure relief: Choose TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze if maximum contouring and premium pricing are acceptable.
  • You want foam with a less stuck feel: Investigate Casper Snow.
  • You want airflow, latex, and organic-material certifications: Consider Avocado Green, while remembering that organic certification is not a cooling score.
  • You want a traditional innerspring and in-room setup: Consider Saatva Classic.
  • You and your partner need opposite temperatures: Prefer a system with independent controls, such as Eight Sleep Pod 5 or Sleep Number ClimateCool or Climate360.
  • You like your current mattress: Try a protector and bedding change first, then consider BedJet 3 or Eight Sleep rather than replacing a comfortable bed.

How to make any mattress sleep cooler

  1. Start with the protector. Remove or replace a thick waterproof protector if it is safe and practical to do so. If waterproofing is necessary, choose the least insulating option that meets your needs.
  2. Use breathable, lightweight bedding. Cotton, wool, Tencel, or other breathable fibers may handle moisture better than heavy microfiber. Wicking helps comfort but does not itself refrigerate the bed.
  3. Reduce insulating layers. A heavy duvet, heated blanket, weighted blanket, or thick foam topper can overwhelm a cooling mattress.
  4. Manage the room. Improve ventilation, reduce humidity, and keep the room at a temperature that feels comfortable for you.
  5. Check the foundation. Confirm slat spacing, weight capacity, adjustable-base compatibility, and whether the foundation blocks airflow.
  6. Allow the mattress to recover. If heat is trapped after a partner leaves, temporarily ventilating the room and pulling back bedding can reveal whether the problem is recovery time rather than initial surface temperature.
  7. Use active cooling when the problem is persistent. A water or air system can make a larger difference than adding another passive material to the mattress.

Trial periods, returns, warranties, and bases: the fine print that matters

Cooling is personal and can change after your body adjusts to a new firmness. During a trial, test the mattress with the bedding, protector, base, and room conditions you actually use. Check all of the following before buying:

Safety and certification claims

All U.S. mattresses must meet federal flammability requirements under 16 CFR Parts 1632 and 1633, which address smoldering ignition and open-flame performance. A brand’s fiberglass-free statement is product-specific; it should not be generalized to every model in that brand’s lineup.

CertiPUR-US applies to certified flexible polyurethane foam. It addresses specified content, emissions, and durability criteria for that foam, but it does not automatically certify the entire mattress, cover, fire barrier, or finished product. See CertiPUR-US’s explanation of its scope.

Likewise, GOTS and GOLS identify particular certified textile or latex components. They do not mean every component is organic, chemical-free, non-toxic, or the coolest available. Avoid broad health claims unless product-specific evidence supports them. The FTC has challenged unsupported organic and VOC-free mattress claims, and its health-products guidance explains the need for appropriate substantiation.

What to do if your new cooling mattress still sleeps hot

  1. Check the test conditions. Was the mattress tested with the same protector, sheets, blanket, and base you use?
  2. Remove the protector temporarily. A waterproof membrane can be the warmest layer between you and the mattress.
  3. Check for a topper. A thick foam topper can conceal the cooling cover and comfort materials.
  4. Look at room humidity. Sweat evaporates less effectively in humid air, even when the thermometer reading has not changed.
  5. Assess body immersion. If you sink deeply, try a firmer configuration or a more responsive latex, grid, or hybrid design.
  6. Check the foundation. An enclosed or unsuitable base can block ventilation and may also create a warranty problem.
  7. Separate first-touch cooling from all-night cooling. A cover can feel cold at bedtime yet retain heat by 3 a.m.
  8. Use the trial strategically. Keep a short log of room temperature, bedding, sleep position, awakenings, and sweating. Change one variable at a time.
  9. Consider active cooling. If the mattress is comfortable but thermal conditions remain unacceptable, an Eight Sleep, Sleep Number, or BedJet system may be more rational than another passive mattress.

If sweating is frequent, severe, new, or accompanied by other symptoms, treat it as a health question rather than a mattress-shopping problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do cooling mattresses really work?

Some do reduce the rate of heat buildup or feel cooler at first contact, especially when they use coils, latex, open grid structures, or tested thermal materials. Passive mattresses do not create cold. For direct temperature control, use an active water or air system. Judge all-night performance rather than a brief cool-touch sensation.

What type of mattress sleeps coolest?

A breathable hybrid, innerspring, latex-and-coil mattress, or open grid is usually the safest passive starting point because these designs allow more airflow and make movement easier. Construction matters more than the word gel or cooling on the label.

Is memory foam bad for hot sleepers?

Not necessarily. Memory foam can provide excellent pressure relief and motion isolation, but thick, highly conforming foam is more likely to retain heat. Casper Snow and TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze are cooling-oriented foam directions, with different feels and evidence. Use the trial and evaluate the full sleep system.

Does cooling gel work all night?

The presence of gel does not prove all-night cooling. Gel may change heat capacity or initial feel, but Consumer Reports cautions that a cooling-gel label is not a reliable predictor of low heat retention. Look for prolonged independent testing or substantial airflow.

Is latex cooler than memory foam?

Latex is generally more buoyant, responsive, and breathable than conventional memory foam, so many hot sleepers find it more comfortable. It feels springier and may be firmer, however, and it may not provide the deep hug a side sleeper wants.

Are cooling mattresses worth the cost?

They can be worthwhile when heat is caused by the mattress construction and the bed also fits your position, firmness, support, and motion-isolation needs. First check cheaper bottlenecks such as a waterproof protector, heavy bedding, humidity, and a blocked foundation. If the mattress is comfortable but too warm, an active cover may be more efficient than replacement.

Can a mattress topper make a bed cooler?

Usually a thick foam topper increases heat retention or masks the mattress’s cooling surface. A breathable latex topper may change the feel and airflow, but it still adds another layer. Test the complete system, not the mattress specification in isolation.

What is the best mattress for night sweats?

There is no medically established best mattress for night sweats. A breathable hybrid or latex bed may reduce heat and moisture discomfort; an active system such as Eight Sleep, Sleep Number ClimateCool or Climate360, or BedJet can provide more direct control. Recurring or concerning night sweats warrant medical advice.

Is a cooling mattress enough for menopause hot flashes?

It may reduce the heat trapped by the bed, but it does not treat hot flashes or their cause. Use breathable bedding and room-temperature control, and speak with a health professional if symptoms are persistent, severe, or disruptive.

Does a mattress protector make a bed hotter?

It can. Thick waterproof membranes and synthetic materials may reduce airflow and moisture evaporation. If protection is necessary, compare thinner breathable models and include the protector in your trial test.

How long should I test a mattress?

Follow the brand’s minimum adjustment period, which commonly ranges from 21 to 30 nights among the products here, then continue through the available trial if the policy allows. Test your actual bedding and record heat, pressure, support, and movement rather than judging only the first night.

What should I do if the mattress sleeps hot during the trial?

Log the room, bedding, protector, and sleep position; remove a thick topper or protector temporarily; improve ventilation and humidity; and check the base. Change one variable at a time. If it remains hot, use the return policy or consider an active system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do cooling mattresses need special sheets?

No, but heavy microfiber, dense polyester, flannel, and thick bedding can overwhelm a cooling mattress. Lightweight, breathable sheets and blankets make it easier for the bed to manage heat and moisture.

Are active cooling beds noisy?

Active systems add pumps, blowers, or other equipment that passive mattresses do not have. Noise depends on the product, setting, room, and sleeper sensitivity. Check the trial terms and test the system at the settings you would use overnight.

Do smart cooling beds require subscriptions?

Some current active systems have plan requirements or optional paid features. Eight Sleep currently lists Standard, Enhanced, and Elite plan choices, while Sleep Number uses app-controlled SmartTemp programs. Check the exact configuration, warranty level, and ongoing cost at checkout.

Is fiberglass-free the same as non-toxic?

No. Fiberglass-free is a specific construction claim, and it does not establish that a whole mattress is non-toxic or chemical-free. Verify the exact model and review the certifications and fire-barrier information.

The Bottom Line

Choose the Purple RestorePlus Hybrid when independently published passive cooling performance is your top priority and you are comfortable with its unusual grid feel. Choose the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Cooling for the strongest conventional hybrid compromise, or the Helix Midnight Luxe if side-sleeper cushioning matters most. Choose TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze for deep memory-foam contouring, Casper Snow for a less stuck foam experience, Avocado Green for buoyant latex and specified organic materials, and Saatva Classic for a traditional innerspring with in-room setup.

If you still wake hot after improving bedding and room conditions, replacing a passive mattress may not be enough. The Eight Sleep Pod 5 offers the most direct water-based control, while BedJet 3 is the simpler air-based upgrade for an existing mattress. In every case, buy for cooling and pressure relief, support, movement, and return protection; the coolest mattress is not necessarily the best mattress for your body.
