A lever-style lifter and a quarter-turn gripper work differently, and a tool listed for one grill system should not be assumed to fit another. Check your grill model and grate type before buying.
How to choose a cooking-grate lifter
- Identify the grill and grate. Find the grill’s model or serial number and determine whether its cooking surface is cast iron, stainless steel, or another type.
- Match the mechanism to the job. A hook or lever lifts by engaging an edge; a quarter-turn mechanism grips the grate. A separate gripper may be designed specifically for stainless grids and planks.
- Confirm stated compatibility. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information for your grill system and grate. Similar-looking grills can have different dimensions and frame widths across generations.
- Compare reach and handling features. Review tool length, handle and grip construction, heat shield, and the way the tool engages the grate. Product specifications are not independent proof of performance or safety.
Weber recommends identifying a grill by its serial number, then checking its compatibility tool or model-specific parts page; if fit remains uncertain, contact the manufacturer. Its guidance notes that grate dimensions, frame widths, and cookbox sizes have changed across generations. Weber’s grill identification and compatibility guidance is a useful model for checking fit before buying any brand’s accessory.

The table compares manufacturer descriptions, not independently tested performance. Confirm current price and availability directly with the manufacturer.

Which mechanism suits your grate?
Lever-style lifter
The Napoleon Grid Lifter is the documented example of a lever-style design. Napoleon describes its 14-inch steel tool as providing leverage for lifting cooking grids and moving sear plates. The company’s product description says: “The Grid Lifter provides you with the leverage to easily lift the heavy cooking grids on your grill.” That is a manufacturer claim, not a comparative test result. Because the page does not specify universal fit, check whether the tool’s engagement point suits your particular grate.

Quarter-turn lifter
Big Green Egg describes its Heavy Duty Grid Lifter as a stainless-steel tool that grips the grid with a quarter-turn motion. It includes a spring mechanism and heat shield, and the manufacturer lists it for standard Egg cooking grids. Choose it on the basis of that stated Egg compatibility rather than assuming it suits other grills.
Stainless-grid gripper
The Big Green Egg Grid Gripper is a different accessory, specified for stainless cooking grids and planks. Its longer 18-inch reach and stated heat resistance distinguish it from the Heavy Duty Grid Lifter, but those figures do not establish that it is the right tool for cast iron or other grill systems.

Match the tool to grate material and grill model
Grate material helps identify what the tool must engage, but it does not by itself prove that a particular lifter is compatible or safer. Weber lists stainless steel, porcelain-enameled cast iron, and porcelain-enameled steel among its grate varieties. It says cast iron retains heat better and longer, and stainless steel can last a long time with proper maintenance. - For a Napoleon grill: Consider the Grid Lifter if its lever engagement suits your grid or sear plate; the cited product page does not claim universal fit.
- For a Big Green Egg standard cooking grid: The Heavy Duty Grid Lifter is the model with manufacturer-stated compatibility across standard Egg grids.
- For a Big Green Egg stainless grid or plank: The Grid Gripper is the product specifically described for those surfaces.
- For another grill or uncertain grate: Use the grill model or serial number to check dimensions and manufacturer compatibility before purchasing.
What the specifications do—and do not—tell you
Length, weight, materials, handle construction, spring, and heat shield are useful details for comparing how tools are built. They do not amount to a controlled comparison of lifting force, ease of use, durability, or burn risk. The cited product pages provide manufacturer specifications and intended uses, not independent performance or safety testing. Treat claims such as heat resistance and compatibility as applying only as the manufacturer states them.
