Best Containers for Storing Clothes: A Practical Guide to Tidy, Safe Storage

The right clothes container depends on the garment. Learn when to use a lidded bin, archival box, cotton cover, or padded hanger, and how to store heirloom textiles more safely.

The best container depends on what you are storing. For everyday clothes, a lidded bin can help keep items organized in a clean, dry, stable place. For heirloom or delicate textiles, choose flat storage in a suitable archival box, pad folds with neutral-pH, unbuffered acid-free tissue, and wrap the garment in clean cotton. Avoid airtight plastic for antique textiles: trapped moisture and condensation can cause damage.

Choose a container to suit the garment and its condition

Before choosing a box, bin, or hanger, consider the garment’s construction, condition, fabric, and how much support it needs. A storage container can protect clothing from dust and light, but the wrong method can put stress on seams or create a damp environment.

  • Everyday clothing: A lidded plastic bin may be a convenient organizing option if it will stay in a clean, dry, stable location. The cited conservation guidance does not establish that a particular bin is suitable for every fabric.
  • Heirloom or delicate clothing: Favor flat storage in a suitably sized archival box, with folds supported by soft, unbuffered acid-free tissue.
  • Sturdy, structured garments: These may be hung on properly padded hangers if their shoulders and seams are strong enough to bear the weight.
  • Fragile, heavy, embellished, knit, or bias-cut garments: Store flat rather than hanging, which can concentrate stress at the shoulders and seams.

The National Park Service advises choosing the method according to a garment’s type, condition, and construction. Its garment-storage guidance covers which pieces are better suited to hanging or flat storage.

Compare common clothing-storage options

Option Best suited to Important considerations
Archival textile box Flat storage for heirloom or delicate garments and textiles Choose a suitable size, support folds, and do not place heavy objects on top. Enclosures can create a damper microclimate, so the storage location still matters. See the Smithsonian Museum Conservation Institute’s guidance on boxes and tissue and the NPS Museum Handbook.
Neutral-pH, unbuffered acid-free tissue Padding folds or separating layers of textiles For general textile storage, the Smithsonian Museum Conservation Institute suggests neutral-pH, unbuffered tissue. Buffered tissue may be unsuitable for silk or wool. See its tissue-paper guidance.
Clean cotton muslin, sheet, or garment cover Wrapping textiles or covering suitable hanging garments Use clean cotton and allow space around a covered garment. A cover does not make a damp storage location safe.
Lidded plastic bin Convenient organization for ordinary clothes in a clean, dry, stable location The cited sources do not validate a particular bin for every fabric. Do not treat airtight plastic as a preservation-safe default for antique textiles; condensation and air movement are concerns.
Padded hanger Sturdy, structured garments in good condition Avoid hanging garments that are weak, heavy, embellished, knitted, bias-cut, or fragile; their weight can strain shoulders and seams.

Store heirloom and delicate garments flat

Flat storage reduces the strain that a garment’s own weight can place on shoulders and seams. Use a box large enough to avoid tight folds, and pad unavoidable folds with soft, crumpled, unbuffered acid-free tissue. The National Postal Museum describes storing uniforms flat in a lidded acid-free box, wrapped in muslin or clean cotton, with folds padded using soft tissue. Its uniform-care guidance also cautions that plastic containers can lead to condensation.

Use clean cotton cloth or muslin between a textile and unsuitable surrounding materials. The Smithsonian’s household advice for antique textiles recommends flat storage where possible and warns against direct contact with many papers or wood. For this specific antique-textile guidance, the Smithsonian gives 65–70°F (18–21°C) and 40–50% relative humidity as ideal conditions; these are preservation recommendations, not universal targets every household must achieve. Read the Smithsonian Institution’s textile-storage FAQ.

Use hanging storage only for garments that can bear it

Hanging is appropriate for sturdy, structured garments in good condition, such as some tailored pieces, when they are supported by padded hangers. A garment should not hang if its upper section—especially its shoulders—is weak, or if its construction makes gravity likely to distort it. Flat storage is generally safer for fragile or poor-condition garments, simple garments such as kimonos, heavy or heavily embellished pieces, knits, and bias-cut clothing, according to the National Park Service.

A cotton dust cover can shield a suitable hanging garment from dust and light. The National Park Service’s dust-cover pattern guidance, dated September 2001, calls for a cover that leaves 1–2 inches of air space around the garment. That is a pattern-fit recommendation, not a product-performance rating.

Keep the storage location clean, dry, and stable

A container cannot compensate for a damp or unstable storage area. Keep textiles away from damp locations and protect them from dust, light, and abrupt changes in temperature or humidity. The Smithsonian advises against storing antique textiles in attics or basements and describes an appropriate area as clean, cool, dry, dark, and as free as possible from drastic climate changes. Those recommendations are for antique textiles; ordinary wardrobe storage still benefits from a dry, clean location.

Do not assume that sealing a garment in airtight plastic makes it safer. The Smithsonian warns that antique textiles need some air movement and that condensation can cause damage. A lidded plastic bin may be practical for ordinary clothing in a stable, dry place, but the cited conservation guidance does not support airtight plastic as a universal choice.

Prepare clothes before putting them away

  1. Check the garment. Decide whether it is sturdy enough to hang or should be stored flat, and inspect for weak seams, heavy embellishment, or other features that need support.
  2. Choose a clean, dry storage place. Avoid locations prone to dampness or drastic temperature and humidity changes, especially for heirloom textiles.
  3. Use clean protective materials. For heirloom storage, wrap with clean cotton or muslin and use neutral-pH, unbuffered acid-free tissue to pad folds.
  4. Pack without crushing. Select a box that accommodates the garment, support folds, and avoid stacking heavy objects on the container.
  5. Leave covered garments room to breathe. For a hanging dust cover, allow space around the garment rather than making the cover tight.

What the guidance does—and does not—establish

Institutional conservation sources support choices based on garment condition, storage materials, and the surrounding environment. They do not compare retail brands or models, establish a best-performing consumer bin, or prove that one container works for every fabric, climate, and storage period. Choose a product category to fit the garment and the space rather than relying on an unsupported brand ranking.
