For most boats, “portable marine air conditioner” is a misleading label: the compact units manufacturers describe are marine systems that require installation, and they are not necessarily appliances you can carry aboard and plug into any outlet. The examples below are manufacturer-listed options, not independently tested winners. Choose only after matching the system to your cabin’s cooling load, boat power, and installation layout.
What “portable” means for marine air conditioning
Marine catalogs use terms such as compact and self-contained to describe installed systems. Webasto describes its self-contained products for boats with one to three cabins, while Dometic presents self-contained units as space-saving equipment. Neither description establishes that a unit is a removable, plug-in room appliance. Webasto’s self-contained marine systems and Dometic’s marine air-conditioning catalog show the intended marine product category.
A self-contained unit still needs an installation suited to the vessel, including the required electrical supply and marine cooling arrangements. If you need equipment that can be removed and plugged in without marine plumbing or installation, do not assume a compact marine system meets that requirement; confirm the product’s intended use and installation instructions before buying.

How to choose a system for your boat
1. Size it for the cabin’s actual heat load
Capacity should follow a load calculation, not a guess based only on boat length or cabin size. MarinAire identifies cabin volume; the number, size, and type of windows; sun exposure; insulation; occupants; heat-producing electronics and appliances; how often doors or hatches are opened; and the desired cabin temperature as relevant factors. Its rough BTU-per-cubic-foot guidance is explicitly a reference, not a substitute for professional load calculation. For a vessel-specific recommendation, consult a qualified local HVAC professional or the boat manufacturer’s original specifications. MarinAire sizing guidance

Dometic describes self-contained marine AC as a space-saving choice for boats up to 40 ft (12 m). That is Dometic’s category guidance, not a universal length limit or a replacement for calculating the cabin load. Dometic marine AC
2. Match the unit to the boat’s electrical system
Do not choose by BTU rating alone. The examples span a 12 V DC Dometic model, 110–120 V and 208–230 V MarinAire variants, and Webasto’s 115/230 V BlueCool SX line. Confirm the exact model’s supply requirements and that the boat can support it; capacity does not establish electrical compatibility.

3. Choose the right system architecture
Self-contained units differ from modular chiller systems. Webasto’s overview distinguishes compact systems from modular chillers, which serve larger boats and multiple separately conditioned rooms. A multi-room layout may call for a different system architecture than a single-cabin installation. Webasto marine cooling overview
4. Confirm heating, footprint, and service access
Check whether the model provides cooling only or reverse-cycle heating, then verify its physical footprint and whether the boat has adequate space and access for installation and future service. Webasto describes reverse heating for the BlueCool SX-Series; do not assume that feature applies to every marine AC unit.

5. Plan for the seawater circuit and air distribution
Review what the specific package includes and what the vessel requires for seawater plumbing and ducting. MarinAire says its listed units include a thermostat, mounting brackets, sensor, and cable, while seawater pumps, plumbing, ducting, vents, grilles, and fittings may vary by boat and may need to be purchased separately. Those package details apply to the MarinAire page, not automatically to other brands. MarinAire package and installation notes
6. Check dealer and service availability
Before committing to a system, identify a suitable installer and a source for service or parts in your area. Dometic provides dealer support through its product category page, and Webasto provides a dealer locator from its site. Dometic marine AC · Webasto marine cooling

Before you buy
- Ask for a load calculation based on the cabin and how the boat is used, rather than selecting solely by vessel length.
- Verify the precise voltage and power requirements against the boat’s electrical system.
- Confirm whether the option is self-contained or part of a modular chiller system, and whether it offers reverse-cycle heating.
- Check installation dimensions, equipment access, seawater circuit needs, and ducting layout with the installer.
- Get a written list of included equipment and vessel-specific parts to be supplied separately; do not treat a unit’s product price as the complete installation cost.
- If removability is essential, ask the manufacturer or seller directly whether the exact product is designed to be removed and used as a plug-in appliance.
