Use open bins for clothes you reach for regularly, flexible fabric boxes for shelves and drawers, and closed or under-bed cases for seasonal items. Measure the space first, then store garments clean and dry.
Start by measuring the space
Measure the shelf opening, closet depth, drawer, or under-bed clearance before choosing a container. Check the product’s external dimensions, and allow enough room to slide it in and out or remove a lid. A listed size is only useful if the full container fits the space you actually have.
For a concrete reference, IKEA lists its HEMMAFIXARE fabric storage case at 27 1/4 × 20 × 7 1/2 inches. Confirm the current dimensions on the IKEA product page before purchasing.
Match the container to how you use the clothes
Frequently used clothes
Open bins make it easier to see and retrieve clothes you use often, such as workout gear or accessories. They trade dust coverage for quick access, so they work best in a closet or on a shelf where you can keep the contents orderly.

Seasonal or occasional-use clothes
A zippered or lidded case closes over its contents and is more practical for items you put away between seasons. Closed storage can help limit dust exposure, but no container by itself guarantees protection from pests, mold, or garment damage.
Clothes stored under a bed
A low-profile case can make under-bed space useful for seasonal clothing. Measure the clearance at the lowest point, including any bed frame or supports, and check that the case can be pulled out. Choose fabric or rigid construction for the location
Fabric bins are flexible options for wardrobe shelves and drawers, and they can be easier to fit into irregular spaces. Rigid plastic bins hold their shape and can be wiped clean, which may suit exposed shelves or situations where stable stacking matters. These are practical tradeoffs described by Closetory, not results from independent product testing.

- Wash or dry-clean garments before extended storage. Organized Living’s 2020 guide recommends cleaning clothes immediately before storing them for a long period.
- Let everything dry fully before packing. IKEA advises storing clothes clean and dry to help prevent odor and mildew buildup.
- Choose a container suited to the storage location and how often you will retrieve the contents. Use garment bags or a container for cleaned garments, as Organized Living advises.
- Label closed or opaque containers with the contents or season so you can find items without opening several boxes.
Clean, dry storage supports better care, but it is not a guarantee against mildew, pests, or other damage. Follow garment care instructions and check stored clothing when you bring it back into use.
