For most automotive clear-coat jobs, choose a gravity HVLP or high-efficiency spray gun with a 1.2–1.4 mm setup, then use the clear coat’s technical data sheet (TDS) to set pressure, reduction, flash time and coat sequence. The 3M Performance Spray Gun is the premium benchmark for its documented 78% transfer efficiency and replaceable atomizing heads. Fuji’s H-V8 is a dedicated HVLP option for waterborne and solvent-borne clears, while DeVilbiss GPG configurations offer clear-coat-capable HVLP and high-efficiency air caps. The best choice depends on your clear, compressor and production priorities—not the gun label alone.

What makes a spray gun good for clear coat?

Clear coat must atomize finely enough to flow into a uniform film without excessive orange peel, dry spray or runs. A suitable gun gives you predictable atomization, a controllable fan, manageable overspray and enough transfer efficiency to put material on the panel rather than in the booth air.

Gravity feed is the usual starting point for automotive refinishing because the cup sits above the fluid nozzle and needs less material pressure than a siphon system. HVLP and high-efficiency designs can reduce overspray, but they often require different inlet pressures and air volumes. Use the air-cap and pressure figures for the exact configuration; a gun body’s headline specification is not a universal setting.

Gun and configuration Clear-coat use Nozzle or atomizing-head range Published pressure or air data What it suits
3M Performance Spray Gun 3M documents automotive clear-coat compatibility. Gravity HVLP atomizing heads: 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 mm. 3M reports 78% transfer efficiency for the system; configuration-specific settings still come from the coating TDS. Premium shops and users who value repeatable changeovers, replaceable heads and the PPS cup ecosystem.
Fuji Spray H-V8 Fuji specifies waterborne and solvent-borne clear-coat use and calls it best suited to base- and clear-coat applications. Air-cap sets from 1.2–2.2 mm. 9–28 PSI operating range; 14.7 CFM air consumption on Fuji’s current product specification. HVLP users with a compressor that can sustain the stated air demand.
DeVilbiss GPG with 7E7 air cap High-efficiency cap listed for basecoats and clearcoats. 1.2–1.4 mm nozzle range. Recommended inlet pressure 16–22 PSI. Clear coats that fit a narrower, high-efficiency setup and operators wanting lower material waste.
DeVilbiss GPG with GPG2 HVLP air cap HVLP cap listed for basecoats and clearcoats. 1.2–2.2 mm nozzle range. Recommended inlet pressure 22–26 PSI. Users needing a broader tip range, provided their compressor can supply the required air volume.

Specifications above are manufacturer-published ranges, not a promise that every clear will spray correctly at every value. Match the tip, air cap and pressure to the product TDS and your actual hose, regulator and working distance.

How to choose the nozzle size

Start with the clear coat TDS

Nozzle size follows the coating, not a generic “clear-coat” rule. Nippon Paint’s 2021 Pro LV7400 HS Clear TDS specifies a 1.2–1.4 mm gravity setup for LVLP at 1.7–2.2 bar and a 1.2–1.4 mm gravity HVLP setup with a 0.6–0.7 bar maximum at the air cap. PPG Refinish’s 2011 AquaMax Series 500 guide specifies 1.2–1.3 mm gravity nozzles for conventional, HVLP and LVLP/high-transfer setups.

What the range means in practice

  • 1.2 mm: A useful starting point for thinner clears and controlled applications when the TDS allows it.
  • 1.3–1.4 mm: Common gravity choices for high-solids automotive clears when approved by the product sheet.
  • Larger than 1.4 mm: Select only when the coating manufacturer calls for it; a larger tip can overload the panel and increase runs.

Tip size is only one part of atomization. Fluid viscosity, reducer temperature, needle travel, fan width, gun distance and air-cap cleanliness can change the result more than moving one tip size within an approved range.

HVLP versus LVLP and high-efficiency guns

HVLP

HVLP (high volume, low pressure) uses a large air volume at relatively low cap pressure. It can reduce overspray and improve transfer, but the compressor must deliver sustained airflow and the operator must keep the gun moving at a consistent distance. The Fuji H-V8 specification illustrates the trade-off: its published consumption is 14.7 CFM.

LVLP

LVLP (low volume, low pressure) is intended to achieve usable atomization with less air than many HVLP systems. It can be a practical choice for a smaller compressor, but “low volume” is not a guarantee that any compressor will keep up. Check the gun’s stated CFM at its working pressure and compare it with the compressor’s delivered CFM (often listed as CFM at 90 PSI), not merely its tank size.

High-efficiency air caps

High-efficiency caps aim to balance transfer and atomization without the same airflow profile as conventional HVLP. DeVilbiss lists its GPG 7E7 cap at 16–22 PSI with 1.2–1.4 mm nozzles, while its GPG2 HVLP cap is listed at 22–26 PSI with 1.2–2.2 mm nozzles. These are distinct configurations; do not apply one cap’s pressure to the other.

Can your compressor run a clear-coat gun?

It can if its delivered airflow remains above the gun’s requirement while you spray, with reserve for line losses and pressure fluctuations. A tank that briefly reaches the target pressure is not enough for a long clear-coat pass.

  1. Find the gun manufacturer’s air-consumption figure for the exact air cap and pressure.
  2. Check your compressor’s delivered CFM at the comparable pressure, then allow practical margin for the hose, regulator, filter and simultaneous tools.
  3. Run a continuous test with the gun fan open and fluid set as recommended. If atomization deteriorates as the compressor cycles, the system is undersized.
  4. Use a clean, adequately sized hose and a dedicated regulator at the gun; pressure measured at the tank is not the same as pressure at the air cap.

For reference, Fuji publishes 14.7 CFM for the H-V8. That figure is a sizing check, not a recommendation to operate every clear at the same airflow.

Set up the gun for a consistent clear coat

  1. Read the product TDS. Confirm approved nozzle, air-cap type, inlet or cap pressure, reducer, mixing ratio, pot life and flash times.
  2. Prepare the air system. Drain the tank, verify filtration, remove moisture and set pressure with the trigger pulled so you read working pressure.
  3. Mix and strain the clear. Use the specified hardener and reducer, respect pot life, and strain into a clean cup.
  4. Set the fan and fluid. Start with the manufacturer’s recommended settings, then spray a test pattern on masking paper or a test panel.
  5. Check the pattern. A balanced, even oval with fine wetting indicates correct setup. Heavy edges, dry centers, pulsing or tails require cleaning or adjustment before the vehicle.
  6. Spray at a steady distance and overlap. Keep the gun perpendicular to the surface, move at a constant speed and overlap according to the coating maker’s instructions.

Clear-coat application timing

Follow the coating maker’s flash window

Nippon Pro LV7400 HS Clear directs one light coat followed by a 1–3 minute flash, then a flowing coat. For a two- to three-coat application, the same TDS specifies 3–5 minutes between coats. Those times are product-specific: temperature, humidity, film build and reducer choice can change the actual window.

Do not bury a wet basecoat

PPG’s AquaMax Series 500 guide says to dry the AquaMax basecoat until it is fully matt before applying clearcoat. A glossy or solvent-trapped base can lead to solvent pop, mapping or adhesion problems under the clear.

Features that lower ownership cost

Replaceable atomizing parts

The 3M Performance Spray Gun uses replaceable 1.2–2.0 mm atomizing heads. Replacing a damaged or contaminated head can be faster than rebuilding an entire gun and helps keep setup changes consistent.

Cup and changeover system

3M’s PPS cup ecosystem is designed for closed-cup mixing and faster color or clear changes. It can reduce cleaning steps, but ongoing liner, lid and head costs belong in the total-cost calculation.

Parts and service availability

Before buying, confirm that needles, fluid nozzles, seals, air caps and cleaning tools are available in your region. A lower purchase price is less attractive if a worn seal or damaged cap takes the gun out of service.

Common problems and corrections

Orange peel or coarse texture

  • Verify cap pressure at the gun, not only at the compressor.
  • Confirm the reducer and viscosity match the TDS.
  • Clean the air cap and fluid nozzle; partial blockage distorts atomization.
  • Check gun distance and travel speed before increasing pressure.

Runs and sags

  • Reduce fluid delivery or use the smaller approved nozzle.
  • Keep each pass moving and avoid stopping at panel edges.
  • Respect flash time and do not stack a heavy coat over a wet one.

Dry spray or poor gloss

  • Check for excessive distance, excessive airflow or an undersized compressor that cannot maintain pressure.
  • Confirm the clear has not exceeded pot life and that the shop conditions are within the TDS range.

Uneven fan or tails

  • Remove and clean the air cap, horn holes and fluid tip with the manufacturer’s approved method.
  • Check that the needle, nozzle and cap are a matched set and correctly tightened.

Buying decision by user and compressor

Your priority Most logical starting point Critical check
Highest documented transfer efficiency and quick changeovers 3M Performance Spray Gun Budget for replaceable heads and PPS consumables; select the head specified by the clear TDS.
Dedicated HVLP for waterborne and solvent-borne clears Fuji Spray H-V8 Confirm the compressor can sustain 14.7 CFM and provide clean, dry air.
Configurable professional setup DeVilbiss GPG with the appropriate 7E7 or GPG2 cap Use the cap-specific nozzle and inlet-pressure range.
Small-shop or occasional work A gravity LVLP or efficient HVLP gun approved by the clear manufacturer Prioritize actual delivered CFM, replacement parts and TDS-supported nozzle sizes over marketing labels.

Safety and cleanup

Automotive clear coats can contain hazardous isocyanates. Use the coating manufacturer’s required supplied-air or respirator system, gloves, eye protection, ventilation and booth controls; a particulate mask is not an automatic substitute for the specified respiratory protection. Keep ignition sources away from solvent products.

Clean immediately after the pot life ends: empty the cup, flush with the compatible solvent, remove the air cap and fluid nozzle, and clean passages without enlarging or damaging the horn holes. Follow the gun maker’s service instructions rather than immersing seals or the entire body indiscriminately.
