For most non-stone showers, Bar Keepers Friend Soft Cleanser is the best starting point for rust stains. Its manufacturer specifically lists glass shower doors, porcelain, tile, rust stains, and mineral buildup, and its liquid formula clings to vertical surfaces. Use CLR Calcium, Lime & Rust Remover instead when you also need to tackle calcium or lime deposits and the shower material is compatible. For natural stone, painted, coated, or sealed surfaces, do not use a general acidic rust remover without confirming compatibility.
Choose the cleaner by shower surface
Rust removers are not safe for every shower finish. Identify the material before applying anything, then spot-test the product in a hidden area.

| Shower surface | Best direction |
|---|---|
| Porcelain or ceramic tile | Bar Keepers Friend Soft Cleanser is a strong first choice. CLR may also be suitable when the specific surface is compatible. |
| Fiberglass | CLR lists fiberglass as a supported surface. Use a short contact time and test first. |
| Glass shower doors | Bar Keepers Friend Soft Cleanser specifically lists glass shower doors. Rinse within one minute and dry. |
| Chrome or stainless steel | CLR and Bar Keepers Friend list compatible chrome or stainless-steel applications, but follow the label for the exact finish. |
| Natural stone | Avoid acidic rust removers unless the stone-care professional or manufacturer confirms compatibility. |
| Painted, coated, or sealed surfaces | Do not use CLR. Follow the finish manufacturer’s care instructions. |
Best overall: Bar Keepers Friend Soft Cleanser
Bar Keepers Friend Soft Cleanser is the most practical lead for a typical porcelain, ceramic-tile, or glass shower because it is designed for rust stains and mineral buildup while remaining easy to apply on vertical surfaces. It is also less likely to run immediately down a shower wall than a thin liquid.
Use it as a stain remover, not a disinfectant. The manufacturer says to wet the surface, apply a small amount, work gently with a damp sponge or suitable soft brush, rinse thoroughly within one minute, and dry the surface. Do not allow it to sit longer simply because the stain looks stubborn.

- DISSOLVES RUST IN MINUTES: Powerful formula dissolves medium to light rust in 10 to 30 minutes or less; heavier rust may need an additional application

How to use it on shower rust
- Remove soap scum and loose grit, then rinse the area.
- Open a window or run the bathroom fan and put on gloves.
- Test the cleanser on an inconspicuous area.
- Wet the stained surface and apply a small amount of Soft Cleanser.
- Gently work the stain with a damp sponge or soft nylon brush.
- Rinse completely within one minute and dry the surface.
Best for rust plus hard-water deposits: CLR
CLR Calcium, Lime & Rust Remover is a useful alternative when orange rust is accompanied by white calcium or lime scale. CLR identifies fiberglass, chrome, porcelain, and stainless steel among its supported surfaces, but excludes natural stone, brass, copper, aluminum, galvanized metal, and painted, coated, or sealed surfaces.
Follow the current product label. CLR’s general guidance uses a 50/50 mixture with warm water, a short application, thorough rinsing, and repetition only if necessary. Never leave it on a surface for more than two minutes. Because it is an acidic cleaner, remove every trace before using another product.
Another dedicated option: Iron OUT Spray
Iron OUT Spray is intended for rust and hard-water stains on bathroom hard surfaces, including tubs, toilets, tiles, fixtures, and glass shower doors. It may be useful when rust staining is widespread, but check the current label for the exact surface, application method, ventilation requirements, and rinsing instructions before use.

How to remove rust stains from a shower floor
For porcelain or ceramic tile, begin with Bar Keepers Friend Soft Cleanser. A shower floor is usually easier to treat than a wall because the product does not need to cling vertically, but the same short-contact approach applies. Do not use aggressive scouring pads on glossy tile, fiberglass, or coated finishes; scratching can make future staining and soap buildup more noticeable.
For a fiberglass floor, use only a product whose label confirms fiberglass compatibility, such as CLR under its stated directions. Apply the minimum amount needed, avoid abrasive scrubbing, rinse thoroughly, and inspect the finish after drying.
How to get orange stains off shower tile
Orange-brown marks are commonly caused by iron in the water or corrosion near a metal fixture. First remove surface grime so the cleaner reaches the discoloration. Then use a compatible rust remover with a short dwell time. If the stain does not improve, stop increasing the contact time or scrubbing pressure. The discoloration may be embedded, the finish may be damaged, or the source may be recurring iron deposits rather than ordinary surface dirt.

What not to use
Do not use bleach as the rust solution
Bleach is not a rust-stain remover. Clorox states that rust stains cannot be removed with its disinfecting bleach and explains that bleach can oxidize iron, potentially making rust staining worse.
Never mix bleach and an acid cleaner
Mixing bleach with an acid forms chlorine gas. Keep bleach, CLR, rust removers, and other household chemicals separate. Rinse the surface thoroughly and allow it to dry before using a different product.
Do not casually use acid on natural stone
Marble, limestone, travertine, and other calcareous stones can be dulled or etched by acids. Some commercial rust removers may also contain trace hydrofluoric acid, which can attack silicate stone. Use a stone-safe neutral approach or contact the stone supplier or a professional restorer.

Why rust stains keep coming back
If orange staining returns quickly or appears on several fixtures, cleaning is treating the symptom rather than the source. Iron in household water can cause rusty color, sediment, metallic taste, and reddish or orange staining. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s secondary standard for iron is 0.3 mg/L.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIron and manganese can both produce orange-brown or black stains. Water testing can identify whether the iron is dissolved or oxidized and whether treatment must account for pH, hardness, and concentration. Depending on the water chemistry, solutions may include point-of-entry filtration, an oxidizing filter, or a water softener suited to low or moderate iron levels.
Do not assume a generic shower filter removes iron. Choose water-treatment equipment only when its verified certification or performance claim specifically covers the contaminant involved.
A safe rust-removal checklist
- Identify the shower material and finish.
- Remove loose soap scum and grit.
- Ventilate the room and wear gloves.
- Spot-test in a hidden area.
- Use the smallest effective amount.
- Follow the product’s maximum contact time.
- Rinse thoroughly and dry the surface.
- Never mix cleaning products.
- Investigate the water supply if stains return quickly.
Bottom line
For most porcelain, ceramic-tile, and glass showers, start with Bar Keepers Friend Soft Cleanser and follow its one-minute rinse instruction. Choose CLR when compatible surfaces also have calcium or lime deposits, and consider Iron OUT Spray for broader bathroom rust staining. Keep acidic cleaners away from unapproved stone, painted, coated, and sealed surfaces—and solve recurring stains at the water source rather than repeatedly scrubbing the shower.
