Start with the vehicle’s owner’s manual, then use a soft cloth and a product specified for that vehicle and window material. For routine dirt, rinse grit away before wiping; reserve a compatible plastic polish for light dullness or scratches.
Choose a cleaner for your car and window—not just a product labeled for convertibles
Flexible plastic or PVC rear windows have a softer surface than glass, so products and cleaning methods intended for glass may be unsuitable. BMW’s 1998 E36 owner’s manual says: “For this reason, only clean the rear window with a soft, anti-static cloth or with BMW Convertible Rear Window Cleaner.” That instruction applies to the vehicles covered by that manual, not every convertible. Manufacturers’ instructions illustrate why compatibility matters. BMW service information for Z3 roadsters specifies a special plastic window polish, applied with a soft, lint-free cotton cloth; it identifies BMW part number 81 22 9 407 665. No comparative performance test establishes which of these products cleans best, removes the most scratches, lasts longest, or offers the best value. Treat a product description or a vehicle-specific service instruction as guidance within its stated scope, not as a universal ranking.
Clean a flexible rear window without grinding in dirt
- Check the vehicle manual. Confirm which cleaner, cloth, and care method the manufacturer allows for your car’s window.
- Rinse away loose dirt first. Porsche’s procedure calls for plenty of water to remove exterior impurities before wiping, to help prevent scratches.
- Wipe gently with a soft cloth. Use the cloth type specified by the vehicle maker or product instructions. Avoid rubbing a dry, gritty surface.
- Use polish only when appropriate. For light dullness or scratches, use a polish explicitly specified for your vehicle or identified for compatible PVC/plastic windows, and follow its application directions.
- Keep chemicals off the top fabric unless its instructions allow them. Porsche specifically warns that Polyglas window cleaner is not for the convertible-top material.

Why glass-cleaning habits can leave marks or scratches
BMW warns that brush car washes may cause faint scratches on the relatively soft rear-window surface. A flexible plastic window should not be treated as if it were glass: follow the car’s care instructions, avoid abrasive or unsuitable products, and remove grit with water before wiping. A cleaner removes dirt; a compatible polish may address light dullness or minor scratches. Neither should be assumed to restore a deeply scratched, cloudy, or otherwise damaged window. BMW’s manual says heavily scratched windows may be replaced and directs owners to an authorized retailer for details.
