No chair makes prolonged stillness healthy: build regular movement into desk work, too.
What to look for in a chair for extended sitting
Start with fit rather than an “ergonomic” label. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends a chair sized to the user, with adjustable seat height and depth and a backrest that supports the lower back. OSHA also advises trying a chair for comfort and fit over time when possible, since general guidance cannot account for every body.
Seat height, depth, and width
- Height: Set the chair so your feet rest securely on the floor. If you need the chair higher to stay aligned with your desk, use a footrest for stable foot support.
- Depth: The seat should support most of your thighs without its front edge pressing against the backs of your knees. You should still be able to sit back and reach the lumbar support. Adjustable depth helps accommodate different leg lengths.
- Width: Choose a seat that lets you sit comfortably and move without feeling squeezed.
These fit checks follow OSHA’s chair guidance and its workstation evaluation recommendations.
Backrest and lumbar support
The backrest should support your lower back in a comfortable position and allow you to shift posture. Check whether lumbar support can be positioned to match your back, and whether the chair’s recline or tilt lets you move comfortably. The NIH Office of Research Services chair guidance identifies adequate lumbar support as the most crucial backrest element in ergonomic seating.

Armrests and desk clearance
Armrests should support relaxed shoulders and elbows, but they should not stop the chair from moving close enough to the desk. Height and width adjustment can help position them appropriately, according to the NIH guidance above.
Material and feel
Material is a preference to assess alongside fit. For example, the Aeron uses a suspension material, but the available manufacturer information does not establish that it is more comfortable than an upholstered chair. If you can, compare how the seat and back feel in person.

How to compare two well-known chair options
These models illustrate different feature sets, not a universal winner. Check the exact size and configuration offered before deciding.

Compare seat depth, lumbar adjustment, recline behavior, arm adjustment, material, and current price on the listings you are considering. Manufacturer features describe what a chair offers; they do not show that it will prevent pain or provide a medical benefit.

Set up the chair with the rest of your workstation
- Adjust chair height: Aim for stable foot support, directly on the floor or on a footrest if needed.
- Check your seated position: OSHA’s posture guidance recommends back support, thighs and hips generally parallel to the floor, and knees about level with the hips.
- Set seat depth and backrest: Support your thighs without pressure behind the knees, then position the backrest so its lumbar support meets your lower back comfortably.
- Position armrests and desk: Support your arms without having the armrests keep you from moving close to the desk. Adjust the workstation as a whole rather than treating the chair as a separate fix.
If the chair cannot be lowered enough to give your feet stable support while keeping your workstation aligned, OSHA recommends a footrest. A removable lumbar cushion can be a temporary support if your current chair lacks lumbar support; OSHA does not present it as a replacement for choosing a well-fitting chair.

OSHA cautions that sitting still in one posture for prolonged periods is unhealthy, even when posture is otherwise good. Its practical advice is to change position, make small chair adjustments, stretch, and stand or walk periodically. A supportive chair can help you work more comfortably, but it cannot replace movement.
