The best central vacuum system is the one sized for your home’s pipe layout, cleaning needs, and preferred hose and filtration setup—not simply the unit with the biggest performance number. A complete system includes a power unit, in-wall piping, inlets, hose, and a cleaning head. Compare the whole installation, then confirm sizing against your actual floor plan.
What makes a central vacuum system a good fit?
A central vacuum moves debris through piping to a stationary power unit, usually located away from living areas. The unit’s suction and airflow matter, but so do pipe length and routing, inlet placement, hose type, cleaning attachments, and the surfaces you need to clean. A manufacturer’s stated coverage area is a starting guideline—not a substitute for system design.
Ask the installer or manufacturer to size the system using the home’s plan and intended use. CentVac specifically identifies piping layout, hose type, inlet count, and cleaning demand as sizing factors. Its coverage figures are manufacturer guidance, not independent guarantees.
What should you compare before choosing a model?
Performance: compare several measures
Manufacturers may publish air watts, airflow in CFM, and water lift. Review these together for the exact model rather than treating one figure as a complete measure of cleaning performance. The specifications below come from manufacturer pages; they are not results of a controlled, independent head-to-head test, and the sources do not establish a common testing protocol across brands.

Filtration and debris collection
Check whether the model uses a disposable bag, a hybrid arrangement, or another filter and collection design. Compare capacity, routine cleaning or replacement needs, and the availability of compatible bags and filters. Cana-Vac’s Signature line, for example, includes electrostatic-bag and hybrid arrangements; its manufacturer describes a high-efficiency HEPA filtration system for the line. Cyclovac recommends regular filtration-system maintenance.
Noise, electrical needs, and service
Use the exact model’s published noise and voltage/current specifications to check its fit with the planned location and electrical circuit. Compare parts and labor warranty terms separately, and confirm regional dealer support and current conditions. Cana-Vac lists a 10-year parts and 5-year labor warranty for the Signature models shown on its product page; verify the terms that apply in your market.

Hose and cleaning head compatibility
Choose attachments for the surfaces and jobs in the home. A suction-driven turbine head and an electrically powered carpet head are not interchangeable assumptions: verify the hose, handle, powerhead, and any required electrical or battery components for the selected setup. CentVac’s product information lists multiple accessory kits and powerhead options, while its EOV FAQ describes a battery wand option for motorized carpet cleaning with a retractable hose.
Whole-installation costs and access
Consider piping and fittings, exhaust routing, hose storage, collection capacity, replacement consumables, and access for service—not only the power unit. A parts kit may include wall inlets or PVC pipe, but fittings and components must match the designed installation and system.

Manufacturer-published model examples
These examples help illustrate how specifications and collection arrangements differ. Values and coverage are from CentVac’s product pages, not independent test results. Coverage areas are presented by the manufacturer as guidelines and depend on system design.

| EOV M715H | 718 air watts; 136.1 CFM; 150-inch water lift | 8-gallon Tru-Seal arrangement | Up to 10,000 square feet |
| EOV DB5000 | 560 air watts; 123 CFM; 133-inch water lift; 62.6 dBA published noise rating | 6-gallon disposable bag; CleanShield filtration | Approximately 5,000 square feet |
| EOV DB8000 | 707 air watts; 136 CFM; 151-inch water lift; 70 dBA published noise rating | 6-gallon disposable bag; carbon-capture filter | Approximately 12,000 square feet |
CentVac positions the F650T for most residential systems and the M715H for large or retractable systems. Those descriptions and coverage figures are the seller’s guidance; ask for sizing based on your layout rather than selecting by square footage alone.

Can you install a central vacuum in an existing home?
Often, yes, but feasibility depends on the building and the route available for pipes. Cyclovac describes installation in existing homes and renovations as possible; BEAM also outlines retrofit approaches for multi-story homes. Treat BEAM’s statement that about 95% of existing homes can be retrofitted as its manufacturer guidance, not a guarantee for an individual property.

Central vacuum piping generally runs inside walls to connect the power unit and inlets, as Cyclovac explains in its Installation and use guide. New construction or renovation can make routing easier: BEAM recommends planning pipe routes after plumbing and electrical work and before wallboard. For an existing home, an installer needs to assess access, floor levels, the unit location, and practical pipe paths.
Plan locations before walls close
- Choose a practical power-unit location and check electrical and exhaust requirements for the exact model.
- Plan inlet locations so the hose reaches the intended cleaning areas without awkward routing.
- Decide where the hose and attachments will be stored.
- Map pipe routes and fittings against the building, not just the floor area.
BEAM says one inlet can serve about 65–75 square meters. This is manufacturer guidance; room arrangement, hose reach, and product configuration affect the result. Have inlet count and placement confirmed for the actual plan.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are retractable-hose systems right for your home?
A retractable hose can reduce the need to carry and store a loose hose, but it imposes specific design constraints. Cyclovac says pipe length must accommodate the hose, curves and fittings must be appropriate, the number of elbows is limited, and suction must be sufficient. Hose length, pipe-network length, and inlet count also affect operation.
Have a retractable system designed as a complete network before installation. Confirm hose length, inlet locations, pipe routing, fittings, and power-unit suitability together; do not assume a standard piping plan will support retraction.

What do the health claims establish?
Cana-Vac’s overview attributes an allergy-symptom reduction of “up to 61%” to a clinical study at the University of California at Davis, but the page does not identify the study by title, author, year, or link. Without a checkable primary study, treat that number as a vendor-reported claim rather than an independently verified clinical result. The manufacturer material cited here does not establish a broader health benefit for every household or system.
Quick Recap
Questions to settle with an installer or supplier
- Does the proposed unit suit the planned pipe route, inlet count, hose type, and cleaning demand?
- Which performance figures are published for the exact model, and how does the manufacturer define them?
- What filtration and collection method does it use, and which bags or filters fit?
- Will the selected hose and cleaning head work together, including any powered carpet attachment?
- Where will the power unit sit, and what exhaust, electrical, storage, and service access does it require?
- What parts and labor warranty applies in your region, and who provides local service?
