A ceiling-mounted hood can be a good solution for an island cooktop, but its performance depends on capturing emissions at the cooking surface—not simply on a headline CFM rating. Center it over the cooktop, cover the full cooking width, follow the selected model’s mounting instructions, and plan a properly sized metal duct to an outdoor termination. Check capture and sound data, local code, and make-up-air and combustion-safety needs before the ceiling is finished.
What counts as a ceiling-mounted range hood?
In an open kitchen, an overhead hood may be a suspended island hood or a unit mounted in the ceiling. A downdraft system is another option to compare when the layout allows it. There is no universal best choice: ceiling height, sightlines, cooktop dimensions, duct access, and the selected products’ installation requirements all matter. The Building America Solution Center says a ceiling-mounted hood is ideal for ranges on an island, while Broan-NuTone also identifies island, ceiling-mounted, and downdraft options for island layouts.

Compare the options for your kitchen
| Option | Potential fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Suspended island hood | An overhead solution when a visible hood works with the room design | Coverage, exact mounting instructions, support, duct route, sound and airflow ratings |
| Ceiling-mounted hood | An overhead option when preserving sightlines is important | Ceiling compatibility, coverage, model instructions, duct route, service and cleaning access |
| Downdraft system | An alternative worth comparing when the island layout and equipment permit it | Product-specific performance, installation requirements, duct route and local conditions |
Do not assume that one style always outperforms another. The available research does not establish a universal winner for every kitchen or product. Evaluate the actual unit and installation conditions rather than choosing on appearance or maximum advertised airflow alone.
Judge capture, not just CFM
Airflow capacity matters, but it does not by itself show how well a hood captures cooking emissions in a particular kitchen. A hood may be too narrow, mounted contrary to its instructions, poorly ducted, or exposed to cross-currents. Look for certified airflow and sound ratings under stated test conditions, and capture-efficiency data where available.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Indoor AirPlus Version 2 (July 2024) recommends a minimum 70% capture efficiency for range hoods, tested to ASTM E3087 or equivalent. This is an advisory in that EPA program, not a universal legal requirement. The EPA document also advises choosing products with airflow and sound ratings under HVI 920 or equivalent, and airflow ratings at a minimum static pressure of 0.375 inches water column.
Washington State’s residential code provides a jurisdiction-specific example, not a nationwide rule: the cited WAC 51-51-1505 table lists alternatives of 65% capture efficiency or 160 CFM over electric ranges, and 80% capture efficiency or 250 CFM over combustion ranges. Applicability depends on location, code edition, and project scope. Verify the currently adopted local requirements.
Cover the cooktop and follow mounting instructions
Center the hood over the cooking surface and make sure it extends across the full cooktop width. Follow the selected model’s placement and mounting instructions; a generic clearance should not be treated as right for every hood. Broan-NuTone gives general guidance of 24–30 inches but notes that model instructions can vary, and Thermador likewise directs users to the specific hood and cooktop manuals.
Before ordering, confirm the cooking-surface dimensions, ceiling height, structural support, sightlines, lighting, electrical needs, duct path, and access for cleaning and servicing. Exact framing and electrical details must come from the selected model’s instructions and project documents.

For best results, exhaust outdoors through compatible metal duct, with a backdraft damper. Broan-NuTone advises against dryer or plastic duct for its range-hood installations, recommends preserving the model’s required duct size, and favors a short, straight run with as few turns as possible. Never terminate exhaust in an attic, wall cavity, ceiling, crawl space, garage, or other enclosed building space.
Duct size and allowable length depend on the hood, airflow, pressure conditions, elbows, termination, and local code. Do not copy a duct diameter from another model or assume that a higher advertised CFM compensates for a restrictive route. Confirm the route and exterior termination before the ceiling is closed.
Make-up air, combustion safety, and local code
Exhaust can depressurize a home and contribute to backdrafting where atmospherically vented combustion appliances are present. The Building America Solution Center discusses the 2018 International Residential Code’s make-up-air trigger for range hoods capable of exhausting more than 400 CFM in homes with atmospherically vented combustion appliances; it also cautions that backdrafting can occur below that threshold. Do not treat 400 CFM as a universal current rule. Code editions and amendments vary, so verify local requirements and have combustion equipment and pressure conditions reviewed as appropriate.

Washington State’s airflow or capture-efficiency provisions are likewise specific to that jurisdiction and code edition. Ask the authority having jurisdiction or a qualified professional which rules apply to the project.
A practical selection checklist
- Measure the cooking surface and choose a hood that covers its full width and can be centered over it.
- Follow the exact hood and cooktop instructions for placement and mounting height.
- Review certified airflow and sound ratings at stated test conditions; look for capture-efficiency results where available.
- Plan a compatible metal duct route to the outdoors, including the required duct size, termination, and backdraft damper.
- Check local code and assess make-up-air and combustion-safety needs, especially where atmospherically vented appliances are present.
- Confirm structural support, electrical requirements, and access for cleaning and service before finishing the ceiling.
These checks help identify a suitable design, but actual installed performance depends on the selected product and site conditions. The research behind this guide did not include product testing or firsthand installation.
FAQ
What range hood works best for an island cooktop?
A ceiling-mounted hood is a reasonable overhead solution for an island; suspended hoods and downdraft systems are also options to compare where the layout permits. Choose based on cooktop coverage, mounting instructions, capture data, duct access, ceiling conditions, and local requirements. The available evidence does not identify one universal best type.
How much CFM do you need for a range hood?
There is no single CFM figure that fits every hood and kitchen. Consider certified airflow ratings under stated test conditions along with capture efficiency, coverage, mounting, duct design, sound, and local requirements. Do not select by maximum advertised CFM alone.
How high should I mount a hood above my stove?
Use the installation instructions for the exact hood and cooktop. Broan-NuTone gives 24–30 inches as general guidance while noting that model instructions vary; that range is not a universal clearance for every ceiling-mounted hood.
Does a range hood need to vent outside?
The cited building-science and manufacturer guidance supports discharging the hood outdoors through compatible metal duct with a backdraft damper. Do not terminate it in an attic or another enclosed building space.
Do I need make-up air for a range hood over 400 CFM?
It depends on the currently adopted local code, the home, and its combustion equipment. The Building America Solution Center discusses a 2018 IRC trigger above 400 CFM for homes with atmospherically vented combustion appliances, but code editions and local amendments vary, and backdrafting may occur below that figure. Verify the rules for the project.
