For the joint where a toilet meets the floor, choose a bathroom caulk labeled mildew-resistant. Bathroom silicone is the strongest category-level recommendation in the available manufacturer guidance; siliconized acrylic-latex is another stated option. Caulk seals the outside perimeter against surface water—it does not repair a failed wax ring or leaking plumbing connection.
What caulk should you use around a toilet?
Look for a product specifically labeled for bathroom use and mildew resistance. Silicone is the best-supported general choice: GE Sealants says silicone bathroom caulk tends to perform best for sealing toilets, and Oatey also identifies bathroom silicone as an option. Oatey names siliconized acrylic-latex caulk as an alternative. These are manufacturer recommendations, not independent head-to-head tests.
| Caulk type | What the sources support | What to check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Mildew-resistant bathroom silicone | Strongest category-level recommendation for the toilet-to-floor joint, according to manufacturer guidance from GE Sealants and Oatey. | Confirm the label approves bathroom use and is compatible with the toilet base and floor materials. Check application, cleanup, ventilation, and cure instructions. |
| Siliconized acrylic-latex | Oatey identifies it as another suitable caulk category for bathroom sealing. | Confirm the product label specifically suits the joint and both adjoining materials; follow its own application and cure directions. |
No cited source establishes a best brand or SKU, a durability ranking, or one cure time that applies to every formula. Choose by the product’s stated use, material compatibility, application requirements, color, and finish rather than assuming all bathroom caulks perform alike.
What caulk can—and cannot—prevent
A bead around the base seals the toilet’s exterior perimeter, helping keep water on the floor from working underneath the fixture. It is not the toilet’s waste seal. If water is appearing at the base, investigate the cause before caulking: a failed wax ring or another leaking connection requires diagnosis and repair. Caulk over an active leak can conceal symptoms without fixing the underlying problem. Oatey also advises against using plumber’s putty beneath a toilet base; see its guidance on when not to use plumber’s putty.

Should you leave a gap at the back?
Published guidance differs. Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s 2007 Home Occupants’ Guide recommends leaving a small uncaulked strip at the back so water from a failed wax seal may become visible. Oatey says a rear gap is not a dependable leak detector because water may emerge elsewhere, and recommends sealing the full perimeter.
The choice involves a trade-off: a gap may make some leaks easier to notice, while a continuous bead seals the perimeter against surface water. Neither approach should be treated as universally required. Check the toilet manufacturer’s instructions and the plumbing code adopted by your local jurisdiction before deciding.

How to apply caulk around a toilet
- Check for leaks first. Do not use caulk as a repair for water emerging from the toilet base. Resolve any suspected wax-ring or plumbing-connection leak before sealing the exterior joint.
- Remove old caulk and debris. Clear the joint and clean the toilet base and floor so the new bead has a sound surface.
- Let the joint dry. Follow the chosen product’s preparation instructions, including any ventilation guidance.
- Apply a steady bead. Run caulk around the base, or leave a rear strip only if consistent with local code and the fixture instructions. Oatey lists a caulking gun as optional, depending on the product.
- Smooth and cure it as directed. Follow the label for tooling, cleanup, and the time to wait before using the toilet. Oatey gives about 24 hours as a usual example, not a universal cure time.
Does plumbing code require caulk around a toilet?
Oatey cites fixture-to-floor sealing requirements in the 2012 International Plumbing Code and the 2009 Uniform Plumbing Code. Those are specific historical code editions, not proof of the rule currently in force everywhere. Requirements depend on the code edition adopted locally and any local amendments; check with your local building department or a qualified plumbing professional if the requirement is unclear.
