Higher-grade silicone or polyurethane can be appropriate for weather-exposed joints, but there is no single best caulk for every window or material. And caulk is not a substitute for flashing: if water keeps getting in, the leak may be in the window’s drainage or flashing details.
How to choose caulk for an exterior window
Start with the actual joint and the product’s technical data—not just the word “silicone” or “exterior” on the front of the tube. The U.S. Department of Energy’s retrofit guidance says acrylic latex or silicone caulk is suitable for gaps smaller than 1/2 inch, and recommends higher-grade silicone or polyurethane where the sealant will be exposed to weather. That is general guidance, not a ranking of particular products.
Before buying, confirm that the specific sealant:
- Is rated for exterior exposure.
- Adheres to both materials that form the joint, such as the window frame and siding or trim.
- Can handle the joint’s expected movement.
- Provides the finish you need, including paintability if the bead will be painted.
- Can be applied under the surface and temperature conditions stated by the manufacturer.
- Is compatible with existing sealant, coatings, and the window manufacturer’s instructions.
Products within the same broad category are not automatically interchangeable. The Department of Energy cautions that “There is no single product that is suitable for all uses, nor that provides optimal properties for a specific use.” Follow the sealant maker’s current instructions and technical data for the specific surfaces and conditions.
Which parts of a window opening should be sealed?
There are three related but distinct jobs: sealing the exterior joint, air-sealing the gap between the window unit and rough opening, and managing rainwater with flashing. Treating them as one job can leave an opening drafty or, worse, trap water in the wall.

Exterior joint
The visible joint between the window and surrounding trim or cladding is where exterior sealant may be appropriate. The Department of Energy’s July 2024 window-installation guide says to “Caulk all exterior edges.” Seal only joints intended to be sealed by the window and wall-system details; do not use a bead to cover a drainage opening or a design feature that is meant to shed water.
Gap around the rough opening
The space between the window frame and the rough opening is a separate air-sealing location. Depending on the installation details and gap, it may be filled with caulk, backer rod, or low-expansion spray foam made for doors and windows. Fibrous insulation alone does not air-seal. The Department of Energy’s installation guide addresses this separately from exterior caulking, calling for the rough opening to be insulated and sealed with backer rod and/or low-expansion spray foam.

Flashing and water drainage
Flashing directs water back out of the wall opening. The Department of Energy advises installers to “Apply properly lapped flashing around window and door openings to direct water out of—not into—the wall cavity.” In a typical fully flashed approach, the sill pan is installed first, the window is set, side flashing laps over the pan, and top flashing laps over the side flashing; the flashing must integrate with the wall’s drainage plane. Sill pans can use different systems, including formable or non-elastic membranes, manufactured rigid pans, or asphalt-based liquid flashing. Follow the window and wall-system details for the specific assembly.
Keep the sill’s drainage path open
Do not run sealant across a sill-pan outlet or otherwise block a path intended to drain water to the exterior. Building Science Corporation’s pan-flashing guidance describes leaving the sill free to drain while sealing at the jambs and head. That is assembly-specific technical guidance, so use the window maker’s and wall-system manufacturer’s details where they differ.

How to approach a window that is already leaking
- Identify where water enters. Note when the leak appears and where water becomes visible; the visible interior stain may not be next to the exterior entry point.
- Inspect the intended exterior joint. If the sealant is cracked, detached, or missing, check whether the joint is meant to be sealed and choose a compatible exterior-rated product.
- Check drainage and flashing details. Look for blocked sill drainage, failed or incorrectly lapped flashing, or a problem where the window meets the wall. Caulk at the visible edge cannot repair a defect in concealed flashing.
- Stop adding sealant if the leak continues. A continuing leak calls for tracing the water path and inspecting the window-to-wall interface—not repeatedly layering on caulk. For active intrusion, concealed damage, or unclear flashing details, consult the window/system instructions or a qualified building professional.
What air-sealing results do—and do not—tell you
A U.S. Department of Energy page reports an Oak Ridge National Laboratory Buildings Technology Center study of a 3/4-inch rough-opening gap: its equivalent leakage area was 28.2 cm²/m² before sealing and 0.5 cm²/m² after the gap was sealed from the interior side. The cited page does not state the study year. This is a result for that rough-opening condition, not a guaranteed outcome of exterior caulking or a prediction for every home.
