Carrier does not say an outdoor air-conditioning unit needs a winter cover: its units are designed to withstand the elements. If you choose to cover a cooling-only unit that is shut down for winter, Carrier recommends breathable material or a cover over the top only, leaving the sides open for airflow. Avoid sealed plastic covers, which can trap moisture.
Does a Carrier air conditioner need a cover?
No—not as a general rule. Carrier says outdoor units are designed to withstand the elements, though some homeowners choose to cover them during the winter off-season. A cover is an optional choice, not a universal maintenance requirement. Carrier’s air-conditioner guidance explains the trade-off.
Which cover type should you choose?
Carrier’s advice points to two reasonable options for a cooling-only unit that will remain off during the cold season. Neither option is identified as a tested or universally best product.
| Cover type | Airflow and moisture | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Breathable full cover | Choose breathable material intended not to trap moisture. | A cooling-only unit shut down for the winter, if the cover fits its dimensions and configuration. |
| Top-only cover | Covers the top while leaving the sides open for airflow. | A cooling-only unit shut down for the winter when you want to cover the top without enclosing the sides. |
| Sealed plastic cover | Carrier warns that plastic can trap moisture, potentially contributing to mold, mildew, rust, and corrosion. | Not the choice supported by Carrier’s cover guidance. |
Carrier’s recommendation is about cover characteristics, not a particular brand, fabric specification, or universal size. Check the cover’s dimensions and the equipment configuration rather than assuming one size fits Carrier units.

How to choose a cover for your Carrier unit
- Identify the exact outdoor unit. Find its model number on the equipment or its documentation.
- Check the owner documentation. Search Carrier’s Product Literature page by model number for instructions specific to your equipment.
- Confirm whether the unit will operate in winter. The cover advice applies to a cooling-only unit during its off-season. If your equipment may run in cold weather, do not assume a generic cover is safe during operation.
- Compare the cover with the unit. Check dimensions and configuration, and favor breathable construction or a top-only design with open sides for a cooling-only unit that is shut down.
- Review your warranty terms. Carrier’s U.S. FAQ discusses parts not supplied or authorized by Carrier and damage resulting from their use. Check the policy for your equipment and region rather than assuming every third-party cover automatically voids all coverage.
What if the unit is a heat pump?
Do not apply cooling-only winter-cover advice to a heat pump without checking its instructions. Heat pumps can operate in cold weather, and Carrier’s heat-pump maintenance guidance emphasizes keeping the outdoor unit clear for airflow. Consult the exact model’s manual or an authorized Carrier dealer before covering equipment that may operate in winter. Carrier also recommends keeping outdoor equipment clear as part of its air-conditioner maintenance guidance.

The cited Carrier material recommends breathable or top-only cover designs but does not name or test a specific brand. Choosing a product is therefore a matter of checking fit, airflow, moisture management, and whether the equipment will remain off—not relying on a claim that a particular cover is Carrier-approved.
